Alice Specht, the skincare expert behind AliceintheRabbitHole, has worked through 35 mists and essences, giving her one of the more thorough records in this category. Her Guru Score for it sits at 51%. She approved 18, gave 15 mixed takes, and skipped only 2, which tells you she rarely writes something off entirely.
What does AliceintheRabbitHole recommend in mists & essences?
The products she keeps coming back to share a few things. Strong fermented ingredients are a big one. She calls bifida ferment lysate a big part of what makes the Manyo Factory Bifida Biome Complex Ampoule so good, and she named the Haruharu Wonder Black Rice Probiotics Barrier Essence her best new find of the year, praising its mix of humectants, emollients, and occlusives. She also responds well to barrier-supporting formulas. The Skin1004 Probio-Cica Intensive Ampoule won her over with panthenol, madecassoside, and asiatic acid working together. Panthenol feeds and calms the skin barrier; madecassoside and asiatic acid are the active parts of cica, an ingredient known for soothing. She has named four category winners here: SK-II Facial Treatment Essence, Haruharu Wonder Black Rice Probiotics Barrier Essence, Neogen Dermalogy Real Ferment Micro Essence, and Manyo Factory Bifida Biome Complex Ampoule.
In her words
"It is the Gothamista Essence and I absolutely love it. It reminds me a lot of using a ginseng serum, even though it is technically an essence. It uses black ginseng, the most aged form of ginseng, which has the highest concentration of those ginsenosides. It's an expensive product, but I see the same results with it as I do with my Donginbi serum. It is truly a phenomenal product, it's an absolute joy to use, and I love it."
"The Manyo Bifida Biome Complex Ampoule has been my clear favorite for years. I still love this product, and I still think a lot of what makes it so amazing is the bifida ferment lysate. It's just a really good formula, really hydrating, really nourishing, and now it's easier to find at stores like Ulta."
"This is the best one that came out this year. It almost reminds me of using the Ilia essence, which is a lot more expensive, and yet I actually prefer the ingredients in this one, the humectant, emollient and even some occlusives in this product. It feels like such an all in one product. Absolutely love this, the only thing is remember to shake it as it is a dual layer essence."
"This ampoule is unlike anything I've ever tried, it's the closest thing you can get to an oil alternative, it fills in the cracks on the surface of dry skin the way oil does and gives real glass skin. It's designed to be very moisturizing with a lot of different amino acids to support the barrier. It's still going to be way too much for oily skin, that skin type can probably skip it entirely, but dry skin might absolutely adore this. You do have to shake it up, which I find a bit annoying, and it can be a bit of a catch twenty two since those repairing plant extracts might irritate sensitive skin, though for me it turned out to just be my cold disrupting the trial. I fell in love with it so much I bought everything else from this brand, and it's one of my three keepers."
"This is their newest collection, the Probio-Cica line, and I love it. It's an intensive ampoule with fermented cica ingredients like panthenol, which is great for nourishing and caring for your moisture barrier, plus the active parts of cica like madecassoside and asiatic acid, all making a product that is very hydrating, moisturizing, and great for sensitive skin. It makes sense they made this a milky serum, and you really do see soothing benefits from it. I'm happy to see this in ninth place among their bestsellers."
"I restocked the full size of the cocokind Calming Magnesium Mist, but it was so nice to have a travel size too. It's a great quick touch up, great for over makeup or under makeup, one of those all in one products."

AliceintheRabbitHole has reviewed 35 mists and essences, for a Guru Score of 51%. 18 approved, 15 mixed, and 2 skipped.
What has AliceintheRabbitHole skipped in mists & essences?
Her two skips tell a clear story. The Covergirl Simply Ageless Skin Perfector Essence had beads that would not break up evenly, leaving a patchy finish she found worse on dehydrated skin. The Rhode Glazing Milk Ceramide Facial Essence she called fine but overhyped, suggesting better value elsewhere. If a product leans heavily on its concept rather than its formula, she tends not to be won over.
"I do have a fail, the CoverGirl Simply Ageless Skin Perfector Essence, I wanted this so badly because I fell in love with a similar product, this is supposedly a dupe for the Chanel Le Teint foundation skin tint and it's the same price. The idea is there, the beads are there, but it's just not breaking up properly, my struggle was getting this to apply evenly because the beads don't break up properly and you end up with a patchy application. Also be careful with this if you have dehydrated skin, my skin was a little dehydrated the other day and the essence part of this immediately soaked into my skin, which made it even worse, so that left the beads on the surface of my skin. What an absolute mess, I washed it right off."
"Rhode sent me just a little mini of the viral glazing milk essence, and it's fine, it's fine. I think Rhode is just one of the most overhyped brands I've ever seen, when I tried their products I was just kind of baffled that they were so popular. I think Cycler's essence is just as good."
What should you take from AliceintheRabbitHole's picks?
Her record shows she goes into every mist and essence willing to be impressed. Just over half earned her approval, most of the rest landed in the middle, and she skipped almost nothing outright. Where she is warmest is with fermented and barrier-focused formulas that actually do what they promise. Her four named winners are worth starting with if you want to shop her strongest recommendations.
