Michelle of Lab Muffin Beauty Science has worked through more than 20 products aimed at acne-prone skin. Her approval rate sits at 60%, so a solid majority got her thumbs up. She tends to be practical and honest, and the products she passed on are just as telling as the ones she loved.

What does Lab Muffin Beauty Science recommend for acne-prone skin?

When she approves something, it usually does one job well without causing new problems. She praised EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46 as lightweight and clear-drying, a real win for acne-prone skin that often struggles to find a sunscreen it can actually wear. She called SkinCeuticals Silymarin CF her favourite from the vitamin C serums she tried. The formula swaps out the heavier vitamin E for silymarin, which sits lighter on oily skin and is less likely to block pores. Melano CC Vitamin C Essence went straight into her holy grails. She found it non-irritating, liked how it evened out her skin tone, and noted that the stable form of vitamin C in it lasts far longer once opened than a standard ascorbic acid serum would. She also approved The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution and said yes to Paula's Choice Weightless Body Treatment 2% BHA, noting it is less sticky than a liquid exfoliant and comes in a larger size for the same price.

In her words

"I found this really non-irritating and it has a really light scent. On my skin it worked really well to even out skin tone. [...] I think this is just a really cool and unique product. It is fantastic for people who don't use vitamin C that much and you need something that will last like a decade. [...] So that is going into the holy grails."
"The Skinceuticals Silymarin CF is the one I like the most. [...] This is like the classic C-Ferulic formula but it was designed for oily skin, so the vitamin E has been replaced with silymarin. The silymarin is less thick and oily compared to vitamin E, and it's meant to clog your pores less. [...] One thing I really like about this is that it actually smells sort of like Caprico coffee lollies with a caramel coffee scent, which is a lot nicer than that classic hot dog water scent."
"If you're buying your product from a good brand that does research and tries to stabilize the ascorbic acid like La Roche-Posay you can actually just tell from looking at the ingredient list and seeing the words ascorbic acid on there"
"Of course also the elf concealer is approved"
"I've also started using the Paula's Choice Weightless Body Treatment with 2% BHA. BHA is salicylic acid, it's a chemical exfoliant. I found that this is a bit less sticky and it's easier to apply because it's a cream. [...] The product that is formulated for your body is easier to apply to your body. [...] If you don't have a whole bunch of liquid exfoliant lying around, then you might want to try this one because they are the same price but this one is twice the size."
"It's probably the most popular Elta MD sunscreen. Elta MD is a brand that's sold in a lot of skin clinics. It's very lightweight and silky. It's meant to be good for sensitive skin, including skin prone to acne and rosacea, and it applies clear with no residue. I'm not entirely sure it would meet the broad spectrum requirements for Australia or the EU with its filters, but it is broad spectrum in the US. It's very wearable, so if you're not getting a lot of sun, this is a pretty good option."

How many products has Lab Muffin Beauty Science reviewed for acne-prone skin?

Lab Muffin Beauty Science has reviewed 25 products for acne-prone skin, for an approval rate of 60%. 15 approved, 7 mixed, and 3 skipped.

What has Lab Muffin Beauty Science skipped for acne-prone skin?

A few products she passed on entirely. She set aside the COSRX Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser because she found it drying, with nothing in the formula to replace what washing strips away. She thinks a gentler cleanser makes oily skin easier to manage long term. CeraVe Renewing SA Cleanser she also skipped, admitting she had recommended it before actually trying it, and found it made little difference on her skin. Tarte Shape Tape Concealer got a firm no: she said its thick texture is simply the kind of thing that causes breakouts.

What should you take from Lab Muffin Beauty Science's picks?

Michelle covers the full range here, from cleansers and exfoliants to vitamin C serums and makeup. Her approval rate of 60% is honest, not generous, and she named a handful of genuine winners. Anyone with acne-prone skin who wants to know which products are worth the money, and which ones she would quietly put back on the shelf, will find her record useful.
