    What the gurus are saying

Short-contact therapy with 3.5% benzoyl peroxide puts you in control of how long the treatment stays on your skin. You can ease into stronger exposure gradually while minimizing dryness. The flexibility to use it either as a regular cleanser or an intensive mask earns praise from experts, making it particularly helpful for those who normally find benzoyl peroxide too drying.

"I love their clear pore cleanser mask. This is basically guiding you through the short contact therapy if you choose the intensive mask option, it's 3.5% benzoyl peroxide. Alternatively you could just use this as a cleanser, lather it to the affected area, leave it on the skin for a few minutes and then rinse it off, and the nice thing about this short contact therapy is it puts you in the driver's seat as far as duration of contact, you can increase the duration gradually while minimizing the drying side effects."

"Neutrogena Clear Pore Cleanser Mask which has 3.5 benzoyl peroxide."

    What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

    Benzoyl peroxide

Benzoyl peroxide has strong evidence for inflammatory acne, and unlike antibiotics the bacteria involved do not become resistant to it. It bleaches towels and pillowcases.

    Sunscreen filters

Sun protection is the best evidenced way to slow visible ageing, and the filters are what does the work. Mineral and chemical filters both protect when a product is applied thickly enough and often enough, which is where most people fall short rather than on the choice of filter.
