Doctorly tend to approve products where the formula and the real-world experience both hold up. Simple, well-tolerated options score well with them. They have singled out Vanicream as the kind of reliable moisturiser anyone with sensitive or reactive skin can reach for without second-guessing the ingredient list. They also look at whether an active ingredient shows up at a concentration that actually does something. They approved CeraVe Intensive Moisturizing Lotion with Urea for its 5% urea, which they say adds a pleasant moisturising slip and real skin benefit. "I've recently been using their toner frequently, it's very hydrating. "When it comes to a body moisturizer, I actually like the experience of their Intensive Moisturizing Lotion the best between the regular lotion and the regular cream. It feels a little bit greasier, I would say some people would describe it as maybe a little bit more oily after feel, more of a slip, but I like that feeling when I'm moisturizing the body. It feels more like the lip barrier than any of the other products from CeraVe. What has Doctorly skipped for sensitive skin?
Six products earned a skip. The reason usually came down to how a product performed in practice, not what its label promised. CeraVe Hydrating Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50 drew their sharpest words. They called it 'unwearable' for anyone without the very lightest skin tone, because the white cast is heavy enough that it barely blends. That means those with medium or deeper skin tones should look elsewhere for mineral sun protection. The CeraVe Hydrating Hyaluronic Acid Serum was also skipped, for feeling more like a lotion than a serum and not measuring up to competitors. The Minimalist Tranexamic Acid 3% Serum got the same verdict, for being unpleasant to use, even though the 3% concentration is technically right.
"The Hydrating Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50, I've worn this quite a bit and it just struggles to blend with darker skin tones. It's [...] very casty. I [...] would classify this as unwearable. [...] This is a criminal release from CeraVe. Unless you have the lightest skin tones or you really don't care about a white cast, you will otherwise hate this sunscreen. It's a pure mineral, it's like a paste. It just doesn't blend really well at all and it'll sit on your face kind of just all white. [...] You can't tell how it doesn't essentially blend very well with my skin."
"I never hear anyone talk about it and I think there's probably a good reason why, it's just not that good. It is a simple hydrating serum, but it actually comes out more like a lotion. So to me, you have their range of moisturizers and some of their moisturizers like CeraVe PM or even their new lightweight gel moisturizer are actually very close in texture to this. I don't find this [...] to be very hydrating. I don't find that the experience is great. As a hyaluronic acid serum, there are a lot of other competitors in this space that I would prefer. [...] I find this one to be okay but not great. [...] Because of its modest benefits, aesthetics plays a huge role for me. I love a very cooling, refreshing hyaluronic acid serum. [...] This one is more of a gel lotion and it just doesn't have that."
"The overnight hydrating mask, I don't think it's maybe necessary for anyone. If you just pick the three that we went through before based on your skin type, that's probably where you're going to have the most success."
"They have tranexamic acid, which I just didn't overall like this formula. It's 3% tranexamic acid, which is the active concentration you do want to look for. They have [mandelic] acid, which is thoughtful in this ingredient list because the thought is that tranexamic acid has some difficulty penetrating into the skin and [mandelic] acid as an exfoliant could help to amplify that absorption process. So it does have a thoughtful list of ingredients, it was yellow, I didn't find the serum really great to use. And also I think there are dark spot products even within their own lineup like the alpha arbutin one which are going to give you better results with dark spots."
