What the gurus are saying

Gurus across the board praise Vaseline as a cheap, effective occlusive that locks in moisture and accelerates healing. Dermatologists consistently recommend it over more expensive alternatives like Neosporin for wound care, and endorse slugging as a proven overnight routine. The one consistent caveat: acne-prone skin may experience breakouts, so it's best avoided or used sparingly by that group. A thin layer is key to avoid heaviness on the face.

"It's allergy season in the UK, or hay fever, as we call it, and I get it so bad. And one thing I swear by every single year is taking Vaseline. It doesn't have to be a stick, and literally just rubbing it along my eye like that and just leaving it like that. I do that in the evening before bed and in the morning, and it saves my eyes from this."

ACTUALLY USEFUL Winter Skincare Tips!
"I do like Vaseline everywhere. Winter is a season of slugging, and this is with a very simple Vaseline face and body stick because it's portable, it's hygienic, it's perfect for targeted use because it's so highly occlusive, meaning it traps in all that moisture in a non-irritating, non-pore clogging way. A lot of people think it's going to clog your pores. It's not. It's too thick to clog your pores. Incredible for healing dryness and cracks. Perfect on top of actives when your barrier needs support. It doesn't moisturize on its own though, that's a myth. But it does lock in all that hydration you've just put on underneath. If you are feeling a little bit dry and you have had to switch up your moisturizer, applying Vaseline in certain extra dry areas is definitely going to help as well. This goes on my lips. It's still one of the best lip protective products. It prevents moisture loss, shields your lips from cold air. Little bit of hydrating serum, moisturizer, then Vaseline. Your lips are going to be saved. Under the eyes, not as a replacement for eye cream, but on top of it. Especially helpful when your under eyes are getting dry."

"What it does do is form a protective layer over the wound which prevents dirt and bacteria from getting in. This was very useful in the 1800s given that one of the leading causes of death at the time was open wounds becoming infected."
The Dirty Origins Of A Beauty Icon - Vaseline’s Story of Controversy & Virality - Behind The Beauty
"It's basically where you cover your face in a thick layer of an occlusive like Vaseline or Cetaphil healing ointment and this works as an occlusive layer to trap all that hydration and moisture into your skin to prevent transepidermal water loss whilst you sleep. It works, it just works. You do this as the final step in your nighttime routine and it just helps seal everything in. If you have very dry and dehydrated skin, I love doing this. You don't have to coat your face in it, just a small layer, just a small spread over your face. In turn, this can help reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, making your skin appear younger. It can help repair the barrier not as a product and ingredient itself but by keeping hydration in your skin. Your skin barrier is going to function properly. You wake up with smooth, soft, well-hydrated skin."
The Dirty Origins Of A Beauty Icon - Vaseline’s Story of Controversy & Virality - Behind The Beauty
"Vaseline is perfectly safe for you. There are opinions and worries from some people though. A celebrity makeup artist said petroleum jelly can create the illusion of moisturized hydrated skin all the while suffocating your pores. It's water repellent and not water soluble, meaning it merely seals the barrier so that moisture does not leave the skin. So whilst you might feel the instant gratification of a softened surface, you're actually drying out your pores by keeping air out. Despite Vaseline's website claiming that their products are non-comedogenic, the thick texture makes it difficult to cleanse from the skin, so it should always be applied to clean skin to help avoid breakouts. A board certified dermatologist said that people suffering from skin conditions like acne and rosacea should stay away from petroleum jelly altogether since thick emollients can aggravate those conditions."

"Vaseline comes in at five to seven dollars. It contains petrolatum at a very high percentage, and this ingredient is a very, very good occlusive. It creates that temporary barrier that holds your skin care in place, holds the moisture and the hydration deep within your skin, and resists the dehydration, the dryness, the tightness, and the irritation. When you create that temporary barrier on your skin, you're really sealing your skin care. It's going to work for you better. It's going to stick with your skin longer, and it's going to translate to faster healing. You can apply it to the areas that feel the most dry, tight, and irritated, apply it all over your face, use it on your lips if they're feeling dry and irritated, or even mix a bit of this into your moisturizing cream at nighttime."

"A petrolatum based product like Vaseline with 40% or more of petroleum helps to promote the healing process and protects that raw and vulnerable skin from infection. You can put a nice thick generous layer over areas with cracked skin, or rub it all around along the base of the cuticle and the nail to really help seal in the moisturizer that you put there. Alternatively you can also mix petroleum into your moisturizing cream and then apply that all over your hands, or you can top off cracked skin or cuticles separately with the petrolatum as a third step."
10 Tips to Fight Dehydration this Winter!
"Vaseline, Aquaphor, or CeraVe Healing Ointment are all like the three most popular products to use for slugging, and so really what you would do is you would apply your moisturizer and then just put a thin layer of one of these products right on top, kind of like a sleeping mask situation."
15 Skincare Tips That Actually Work!
"If you put a little dab of Vaseline in your palm mix it with your moisturizer, so that's like the oil going to make the application of the petrolatum ointment a little bit thinner cuz it can be a little suffocating it can be a little heavy if you put a straight layer of that on your face. If you've never liked that try mixing a little dab of it into your moisturizer. It booms up the occlusive abilities of your moisturizer so you're still locking in all your skin care and that's the real magic of the petrolatum ointment it locks everything in place all that hydration all that moisture all that plumpness all that goodness. So when you wake up your skin still looks and feels like that in the morning. It creates that really protective layer on your skin while you're sleeping and locks everything in. It still works but it helps to make the layer a little more tolerable for some folks when you mix it right into your moisturizer."
20 Money Saving Skincare Tips 💸
"You can use a layer of a petroleum based ointment like Vaseline as a sleeping mask or slugging product to seal in all your other skincare products. You can also use it around the eye area, maybe in place of your eye cream to really seal in additional moisture at night time. You can actually use it to replace a lot of your common skincare and beauty products. You can take a little bit of sugar and mix it into a bit of petroleum to make your own lip scrub. Another use for petroleum based ointments is as a cuticle treatment. You can put on your normal lotions, maybe a little oil, and then seal it in with some Vaseline."

"Plain petroleum jelly like Vaseline Original Healing Jelly does the same job just as effectively. "Vaseline is an occlusive agent, it's petroleum jelly, and when used in this manner it can potentially soften the contents of the pore. So if you go afterwards and scrub it off it could potentially help. Thing is I actually don't recommend doing this. If you're prone to blackheads you're likely also prone to acne, and if you are acne prone using Vaseline can potentially increase your risk for breakouts. So I don't recommend this generally."

"Vaseline is just a safe petrolatum based product to use. It's been filtered distilled over and over where it's very safe to apply even to the face. And that's why we have slugging. Slugging is a trendy term that came out but dermatologists have been recommending that for years and that's just applying a moisturizer and then a thicker ointment like Vaseline over the face. A pea size amount is all you need for slugging to work. It just gives you a nice glowy dewy look after applying the Vaseline, especially accentuates the shine on your cheekbones."
How To Treat Scars Like a Dermatologist
"When you get a cut I like Vaseline or other healing ointments. The ointment is pretty soothing and goes on, doesn't hurt, doesn't sting. I like moisture with wounds. Keeping a nice moist layer of Vaseline over it helps bring in new cells. This has been proven over time. Drying out a wound will slow down healing if a big scab develops. It's going to become more of a noticeable scar later on. We want to keep a nice layer of moisture because it brings in keratinocytes and promotes re-epithelialization much better."

"I love applying a little bit of Vaseline if you have dry chapped lips or if you have irritation around your eyes. I don't like chapstick because a lot of times my patients are getting allergic to the ingredients in chapstick like beeswax, propolis. I like just plain old Vaseline for the lips. If you want a little bit of slugging, you want to apply that as well before going to sleep or before a big event to get a little highlight on your cheekbones. If you have very dry cracked heels, Vaseline is there to the rescue. You can totally apply it on your heels and put a sock over it before going to sleep, and when you wake up, take off the sock and you have nice and smooth heels."

"Vaseline's petrolatum ointment serves as a great barrier, say for kids who have diaper rashes or if they're going through a bout of a GI illness and they're just going through a lot of diapers and you want to protect the bottom, Vaseline's great. If you are struggling with a lot of saliva for kids collecting around the mouth and lower chin area, you can use Vaseline on the face to help prevent saliva from sitting on the skin causing an irritant contact dermatitis. For us adults though, chapped lips, I love Vaseline for chapped lips, and also slugging around the cuticle. If you have raggedy cuticles that are drying up, put a nice petrolatum ointment like Vaseline over your cuticles and they will promote nice nail growth."

"Just use a small amount of Vaseline if you're raw, especially like around the nose. I like to use it around the eyes. When I have tears that run down, this is a little landing area for my tears. Skin Hydration 101: Tips From A Dermatologist For Hydrated, Plump Skin
"You can use petrolatum, whether it's a healing ointment or Vaseline. I have my big Vaseline and my baby Vaseline. You can slug your lips, I like the baby Vaseline for my lips. The bigger one you can do on the face, but you just need a small amount on cheekbones, forehead. I like to put it around your eyes, this is a nice area just to glow up. You can slug the back of your hands, slug your cuticles for a nice shiny glow around your proximal nail fold and cuticles. That's how you hydrate your skin before a big event, before a big day."
Top Skincare Routine Mistakes You Need To Stop Making Now!
"Vaseline is just filtered safe, you can use this for your babies. I'm seeing in clinic people talking about slugging or on social media people just putting gobs of Vaseline or petroleum on their face, and I'm like, you're using too much, you're going to occlude your pores. If you put that much over your active ingredients, you might push them in further and really cause irritation. So really all you need is a small amount, less than a pea-size amount. A little bit on your cheekbones, forehead, if you get a little flaky here you can put some in your eyebrows to help shape them, little ceber dermatitis you can get those flakes down. I like to put in the corners, especially before you go to bed. You can put some in the corners while little tears drip that way, and then a little extra on your lips, corners of your lips and the lips itself. I prefer applying Vaseline over the lips with your fingertips instead of using a roller, much gentler. That cute little sample yields so much of a glow and soothing benefit to the skin. Super easy, slug the right way, just a small pea-size amount. You don't need more than that."

"If you want to use something like Aquaphor or Vaseline Original Healing Jelly for really dry skin, I'm okay with that as well. And then have them put their PJs over that to kind of lock in all of that moisture and you're slugging that moisture in with the thicker ointment."
How to Upgrade your Nighttime Skincare Routine!
"I have this little baby sample of Vaseline so cute right at my bedside stand. I keep it separate, just because I don't want to get it mixed up with my foot one. This one I definitely will use during the winter time when the heaters are on drawing out all the moisture while we sleep. So I really find that petrolatum is a nice thing to put on your lips, especially if you're on say acne medications like isotretinoin, which will really dry out your mucosa in your nose and your lips. So you can apply some, just a small amount of Vaseline in the nose and on your lips before you go to bed and stay hydrated while you're on that medication."

"Vaseline has a really long history of being a tried and true product. It's filtered many times, it's distilled, it's a clean product of just pure petrolatum, and it's not like you're putting gasoline on your face. It is a nice safe product that we do for babies, kids, and adults. I've been recommending it for years, even before I was a Harvard dermatologist, and all the Harvard attendings would talk about Aquaphor and Vaseline all the time. It's just a great thing for wound care. If you have a cut or scrape, I use petrolatum for a non-infected wound to help protect it and then cover it with a Band-Aid. And if you want to slug and get a little dewy finish, apply a petrolatum ointment over your moisturizer or your hydrating serum, especially on the cheekbones, just a pea-size amount, and you can really glow up and get a nice dewy finish."

Dermatologist Explains: THREE Tips to Optimize Your Bedtime Skincare Routine!
"I like to look at this cute little sample Vaseline. You're going to get your Vaseline or aquaphor or CeraVe healing ointment, just put a small amount on your eyelid skin. I bring it a little bit down on the cheekbone because my cheekbones tend to collect tears there and they get irritated. And then you also put a little bit on your lips to slug your lips because this is an area where I see my patients get really chapped lips and irritation. We call it cheilitis, we get inflammation, cracking of the lips leading to just being really painful when you open your mouth. It can really be painful at the corners. You can even see bleeding. So while we sleep the heaters are on and it's pulling out all the moisture from our face, so it's really important to put Vaseline or some kind of petrolatum over the lips, over the eyelids. So when you put your retinol on you won't have as much dryness and irritation. I don't recommend slugging right over your retinol, putting a whole layer of Vaseline over the layer of retinol on your face because that can really occlude it, trap it in too much and push it into the skin further and cause more irritation. But I like to just spot treat this on the eyelid skin and on the lips before bedtime."

Black Friday Deals and Skincare Q&A
"I truly believe that Vaseline is one of the greatest products and petrolatum being one of the greatest ingredients of all time. It's incredibly safe, it's inert. A lot of times it's triple refined so that there's no hydrocarbons. A lot of people are worried about the fact that since it's refined from petroleum that there could be risk of that, but they refine it so that there's no hydrocarbons that are damaging to the skin. It's one of the safest, most inert things that you could ever use. It doesn't cause barrier issues. It's actually one of the most effective occlusive moisturizers, if not the most effective occlusive moisturizer. It prevents 99% of transepidermal water loss. It doesn't have lipids in it or oils that can really seep between your cells, so it doesn't have the ceramides, it doesn't have anything that's going to be penetrating into the skin, but it's locking everything in."

"If there was ever to be a Nobel Prize for a skincare ingredient it would be white petrolatum. Petroleum jelly, Vaseline, the greatest skincare ingredient of all time I truly believe it. There is a good reason why this ingredient is one of the best, in fact a hero ingredient, and if you go to any dermatologist's house you're like, hey, do you use Vaseline? It's probably going to be a yes because we use it all the time in and outside of the office."

"It's an effective occlusive, and one of the reasons why our skin gets dry is because we lose moisture to the environment. Petrolatum is the most effective ingredient to reduce transepidermal water loss, so simply using it as a moisturizer, what we call slugging where you use it as the last step in your skincare routine to lock everything in, I truly believe it's incredibly effective for repairing a damaged skin barrier and being one of the most effective moisturizers on the market. You just use a thin layer of serum, thin layer of moisturizer, thin layer of Vaseline to lock it all in. That's how you slug, and it's definitely dermatologist approved. You can also use it as a protectant on areas where you don't want other things to get, so if you're going to use a high strength chemical exfoliant, you could use it to protect the under eye area by applying it first, then applying the chemical peel on the rest of the area."

"Vaseline is the best thing for wound healing. Keeping your wound moist first of all is better than keeping it dry. A lot of people think it's not going to allow wounds to heal because it's not letting your skin breathe enough, but it's been shown in multiple studies to aid in wound healing and make your wounds heal faster. It is the most dramatic difference even at one to two weeks. It also helps prevent secondary infections. It's been studied multiple times compared to topical antibiotics and shown to be as equivalent or as beneficial at preventing infections as antibiotics. After any injury, making sure you clean the wound or after any surgery, applying Vaseline for like 2 to 3 weeks gooped up is the number one thing you can do."

"A lot of people think it's not going to allow wounds to heal because it's not letting your skin breathe enough, but it's been shown in multiple studies to aid in wound healing and make your wounds heal faster. I tell this to patients all the time, I do a lot of surgeries on skin cancers. The most dramatic difference, even at one to two weeks, is based off whether or not you keep it covered and goopy. It is tremendous in terms of healing, and it also helps prevent secondary infections. It's been studied multiple times compared to topical antibiotics and shown to be as equivalent or as beneficial at preventing infections as antibiotics. After any injury, making sure you clean the wound, or after any surgery, applying Vaseline for like 2 to 3 weeks gooped up is the number one thing you can do for any wound. This also includes burns, after the next day or so, applying Vaseline-based products to even a burn wound is the best way to heal it. One of the most common concerns, especially on the face, is that it's comedogenic, but there's been studies to show that it is not comedogenic, it is not pore clogging, it's not likely to cause acne."

"Vaseline Original Healing Jelly is 100% petrolatum, alternatively called 100% petroleum jelly. Petrolatum is an occlusive moisturizer. A side myth is that petroleum jelly isn't actually a moisturizer, it's just an occlusive because it doesn't contain humectants like hyaluronic acid or glycerin which are ingredients known to help retain water in the outermost layers of the skin. However, it's the occlusive properties of petroleum jelly that make it such an effective moisturizer because it's really good at trapping the water in the skin. The goal of moisturizing the skin is to keep water there, and an occlusive like petroleum jelly will achieve that. Petrolatum is actually considered the most robust occlusive moisturizer as far as its ability to reduce transepidermal water loss. Nothing can compare to petrolatum. So when it comes to sealing in moisture into the skin, petrolatum, petrolatum, petrolatum, that is where it's at."

You can hang out with the Saran Wrap on for like 10, 15, 20 minutes. As long as you can tolerate, it really can help."
Skincare Ingredients to Avoid: A Dermatologist's Perspective
"One skincare product you hear me recommend all of the time, all of the time is petroleum jelly, name brand Vaseline Original Healing Jelly. That product is one of the safest things you can put on your skin and very low, almost no risk of allergic contact dermatitis developing to it. It can cause irritation for some people, especially in the heat and the humidity, but it is a very safe thing to put on the skin, especially when you don't know if you have developed an allergy to something and you're having problems with the skincare products that you are using. I often will recommend that as a lip balm for people who are dealing with chronically dry, chapped lips because they may have developed an allergy to something that is commonly found in most lip balms. Petroleum jelly is like the ultimate free of product because it's free of the majority of allergens, potential allergens, and tends to not be irritating on the lips."

"I've been putting a big glob of this on my feet every night covering with socks and just now I was doing it and I look down at my toenails and they look amazing. I attribute it to petroleum jelly because I run and I walk a lot so inevitably I get some degree of a little bit of nail dystrophy, and the petroleum jelly really helps with the proximal nail fold, keep it hydrated and act almost as a second cuticle. I believe that has really helped the matrices of my toenails stay a little happier since I've been doing this. I tapped into this jar I believe sometime in December."

"Petroleum jelly really shines for the lips for reducing chapped lips. Put it on at night time when water loss out of the skin is even greater from your lips. So it will keep them hydrated. Really good in the corners of the mouth for reducing breakdown of the skin there by pooling of saliva. Petroleum jelly is also wonderful and should be a first-line thing that you reach for if you get a cut, a scrape. First, you want to wash that out with a little dilute soapy water. And then apply petroleum jelly because it essentially acts as second skin, protecting the underlying wound bed and keeping it moist, which is essential for proper wound healing. It's much better to use petroleum jelly than an antibiotic ointment like Neosporin because these antibiotic ointments, they're in a petroleum jelly base, but they have antibiotics in them that are not particularly helpful and often times end up causing more harm."

Preventing because it lubricates the skin surface to cut down on frictional forces that would otherwise lead to blister formation. So if you get a new pair of shoes, it might be a good idea to put a little petroleum jelly in areas where the straps are rubbing. When you do get a blister, don't pop the blister. The roof of the blister is a natural bandage trying to protect the underlying skin. Eventually it will break and clear liquid will ooze out. Don't cut that away or peel it off because that will cause more harm than good. Instead, just gently drape it over the base of the blister, put a glob of petroleum jelly to really kind of glue it in place and then act as a protective second skin shield. It'll change the game for you in healing blisters. Petroleum jelly for your nails is amazing and underutilized because if you put it around the nail folds, it helps to reduce moisture."

For your nails, if you put it around the nail folds, it helps to reduce moisture getting up under there, which ultimately leads to nail ridging. So it's great for the health of your nail plate, but it also helps improve moisture content in the skin, allowing for better turnover of the skin cells. As a result, your cuticles will be a lot healthier. They won't be all dry and crumbly and peely. Petroleum jelly is wonderful for dry hands. It will potentially help to cut down on lash breakage, but you want to be careful with petroleum jelly that close to the lash line that it might end up making its way into your eyes, which is not pleasant. It can break up cosmetic films, but in contrast to a cleansing oil, it doesn't have emulsifier, so it doesn't rinse off the skin particularly efficiently. While you can use it that way, that broken up cosmetic residue is kind of going to be more stuck on your face. It will come off if you wash with a gentle cleanser, but it's a lot more resistant to removal with water. Petroleum jelly can help with fading certain types of dark spots depending on if they are related to issues surrounding the skin barrier indirectly. If you have atopic dermatitis and deal with a lot of flare-ups and those flare-ups heal with hyperpigmentation as is often the case with deeper skin tones, it can help."

"Plain Vaseline, don't waste your time with the cuticle oil. Cuticle oils can soften dry rough skin a bit but they're not going to offer what petroleum jelly can. Petroleum jelly is the best occlusive. It helps to protect the skin around the nails so as to limit access of water and debris up under the nail folds that compromises nail growth, and it also helps to improve water content in the nail plate itself. Even better, get yourself some gloves, apply petroleum jelly to the nails and cover with gloves. This really can maximize efficacy. Do this in the evening time, say after you get out of the shower, leave the gloves on as long as you can tolerate, and if you can sleep in them, even better."

Is Vaseline Safe for Eyelids? Milia, Lash Growth & Dry Skin Explained
Is Vaseline Safe for Eyelids? Milia, Lash Growth & Dry Skin Explained
"Vaseline is an effective moisturizer. It's the most robust occlusive. It reduces water loss and supports barrier repair. It has extremely low to no risk of allergic contact dermatitis. It protects the eyelid skin from allergens and irritants. It does not cause milia. It does not grow the lashes, but it might reduce lash breakage and make them look a little better. For dry, irritated eyelids, Vaseline is an amazing choice."
How To Get Hydrated Lips FAST | Dermatologist Tips
"Get yourself some plain petroleum jelly, name brand Vaseline. Apply it at night time, actually before you go to bed, because at night our skin, including the skin of our lips, loses water more readily, and petroleum jelly really helps to lock that moisture in place. So the following morning you wake up and your lips are already moisturized. Plain petroleum jelly is the one that is least likely to cause you any issues as far as allergic contact dermatitis."

"You're going to put plain petroleum jelly, 100% petroleum jelly. You could use Vaseline brand or, you know, the Dollar Tree sells one. Put that on a blister. As a matter of fact, start putting it on the blister when the roof is still intact. And then once it deflates, take that little flap gently. Put it back over the skin as much as you can to make sure it's covering as much of the underlying raw skin as possible and kind of glue it in place with petroleum jelly. Really will help you out tremendously. I sometimes I get blisters related to shoes on my feet with running shoes for example. And I swear petroleum jelly is the best thing for those blisters."

"This is petroleum jelly, and the store brands at Target or Walmart are significantly cheaper than name brand Vaseline with no difference in terms of performance. It's excellent for healing cuts. Don't waste your time with Neosporin because all you're going to do with Neosporin is what petroleum jelly does anyway. The antibiotics in Neosporin, Bacitracin and Neomycin, they don't improve healing above and beyond what plain petroleum jelly can do, they don't reduce the risk of infection above and beyond what plain petroleum jelly can do. Instead, what they do is they are very sensitizing, contact dermatitis to those ingredients is very common, and they increase the risk of emergence of antimicrobial resistant bugs. All you need for a cut is plain petroleum jelly. Just wash it out with a little dilute soapy water and apply petroleum jelly. Don't waste your time with the antibiotic ointments."

"Plain petroleum jelly is plain petroleum jelly. You have a waterless ointment so it has a really long shelf life. It's excellent at reducing water loss from the skin, so it's really a dry skin hero. Many people don't care for the way it feels on the skin because it is greasy. Slugging, basically just putting a layer of petroleum jelly all over your face before you go to bed at night to really seal in moisture, is actually a really great way to cut down on dry skin. Some people with acne-prone skin find that petroleum jelly, because it is so occlusive, can actually aggravate their acne, so it doesn't work for everyone to just put it all over the face. But if anything, it is definitely something to have regardless of your skin type because it really can offer excellent spot-focused moisturization for really stubborn dry patches. I love it as a lip balm, love it for dry irritated eyelid skin. I personally find it to be a game changer on my feet. When I get out of the shower, the bottoms of my feet are nice and hydrated. Slather them with petroleum jelly and the key is to cover with socks to really lock it in. It works really well on the body too, arms, legs, right after you get out of the shower."

Repair The Skin Barrier Fast With The Soak & Smear Method
"The go-to ointment recommendation for this as well as numerous other things is plain 100% petroleum jelly. You can buy the name brand Vaseline or you can buy the store brand petroleum jelly and save yourself a couple of bucks. It's going to do the same thing. Petroleum jelly is very oily, very greasy, and really really good at trapping water in the skin and reducing transepidermal water loss. The Best Remedies For Dry Skin On The Legs
"One of my number one tips that I often give when it comes to rectifying very dry skin is to lean into a petrolatum based ointment such as Vaseline. In the evening time when you get out of the shower or out of the bath, pat dry the skin of visible drips of water and immediately slather with a thick coat of that petrolatum ointment. It's going to feel uncomfortable, you're going to be like I don't know about this, but what you're going to do is get yourself an old pair of cotton pajama pants and put them on over to really trap that in there and let it really lock in the hydration into your skin. This can really change things up for you. If you want to go all out, get yourself some plastic wrap or gauze bandages and wrap your legs up. It really can just jump start barrier repair and get you back on track. It's not something that you have to do every night for the rest of your life because it is rather involved, but it can really get things back on track."

Apply these onto the hands at night after you get out of the shower or the tub and then cover with cotton gloves, leave those cotton gloves on as long as you can tolerate. You can even sleep like this. It will really, really, really help to improve the integrity of the barrier and allow for rapid barrier recovery."

Cult Classics: Skincare Products That Have Stood the Test of Time
"Petroleum jelly can be a very effective moisturizer when applied to the face. It's good for acne. It is free of possible allergens. The risk of allergy to petroleum jelly is almost non-existent. Petroleum jelly is a very highly refined substance and it consists of hydrocarbons that form an occlusive barrier on the skin to reduce transepidermal water loss and to protect the skin. One of the many advantages of petroleum jelly is that it resists oxidation so it remains very stable and it also resists microbial contamination. It is a waterless product. Bacteria do not grow in it. While most Vaseline jars come with a shelf life of 3 years, it actually has a very, very, very long shelf life in general. Mind you it's greasy on the skin. People don't necessarily care for the feel of it. And while it's great that it offers an occlusive barrier, some people find that because of that, it slows down the evaporation of sweat, makes them feel overheated."
Gentle Skincare - Tips For Rosacea & Sensitive Skin
"Petroleum jelly is a game changer for dry eyelids or eyelid eczema because it prevents water loss really well and it also prevents penetration of irritants into the skin. It's free of common allergens and irritants, so your immune system really doesn't care about Vaseline, which is a good thing. It's basically an inert little barrier support there. It's really underrated for all the things you can do with it. It's also beneficial for cutting down on chafing and wind burn if you live somewhere cold and windy."
The Skincare Ingredient You’re Neglecting for Dry Winter Skin
"Petroleum jelly will buy you the most long-lasting reduction in transepidermal water loss, which is exactly what you need when your barrier is impaired. It's chemically inert. It doesn't degrade. Petroleum jelly, straight petroleum jelly, that is 100% aka Vaseline. It has a long shelf life. It has zero water in it, so it's not going to become contaminated with bacteria. It doesn't require any preservatives because nothing's going to grow in it. It's extremely extremely stable in contrast to maybe oils, which depending on the oil, of course, could oxidize and become more inflammatory. Petroleum jelly is something that the immune system doesn't really care about, which is fantastic because when you have an impaired barrier, your immune system is on the defense and you're a lot more likely to mount allergic reactions to things that you're putting on the skin. So, petroleum jelly is actually the safest thing to use in these situations. It's used on babies. It's used on people who have different types of eczemas. We use it after dermatologic procedures to heal wounds. It's a go-to recommendation for healing cuts and scrapes. I mean, it really does a lot for the skin. Underrated."

"I finished a small little jar of Vaseline Original Healing Jelly. This is just straight petrolatum. I like to grease up my feet at the end of the day after I get out of the shower, my ankles especially, with an ointment, and Vaseline is the quintessential ointment, the quintessential skin protectant. It's really really awesome for cutting down on frictional forces, which around your ankles, at least for me, like with running and walking and stuff, sometimes I whack my ankles together and it creates a lot of friction that can lead to discoloration there. This really helps with that and it also helps with how my feet look. I also like to use this on the lips, the eyelids. I go through a jar so so fast because I do really use quite a bit of it. It's also a wonderful thing to use on dry knees, dry elbows. The soak and smear technique, where when you get out of the shower you just smear an ointment all over your legs, in this case Vaseline, is great for rejuvenating the look of your legs."

Dermatologist Explains Slugging: How to Add it to Your Skincare Routine | Dr. Sam Ellis
"If we are talking slugging 101, this is typically done with 100% pure petroleum jelly, and the petroleum jelly product that most people are familiar with is good old-fashioned Vaseline. This has been around since the 1800s and has a very long proven track record. This proven track record isn't just for efficacy but also for safety. Cosmetic grade petrolatum that is used in products like these is completely safe. The reason that 100% pure petroleum jelly is so amazing is that one, it is inert, meaning that it doesn't bind with proteins in your skin that can induce an allergic reaction. So anytime you're using anything else in your skincare, whether it's preservatives, fragrance, etc., there's always a potential for allergenicity, but when you're looking at pure Vaseline, you just don't become allergic to it."

You can just apply this a couple times a day to the area after you go to the restroom and clean with a peri bottle."

"My first recommendation here is going to be the OG Vaseline, the original healing jelly. This is 100% petrolatum, the gold standard occlusive, recommended by dermatologists worldwide. It is about as pure as it gets. It is probably one of the most inert things that you can put on your skin. It locks up to 99% of skin's natural moisture. It is completely fragrance-free, hypoallergenic, safe for even eczema-prone skin. And I love it because it creates this protective seal to prevent that transepidermal water loss. So you are getting to the core of eczema treatment. It also helps soothe cracked healing lips if you have any cuticles that are cracked, if you have any heels that are cracked. And this stuff will not burn. Even if you apply it to the most sensitive cracked open skin, it will not burn or irritate your skin. For eczema, I love it on top of serums or moisturizers for that added protection. You're going to have damp skin, apply your moisturizer with ceramides and then apply this on top to kind of seal in that moisture."

"My first recommendation here is the Vaseline Original Healing Jelly. This is 100% petrolatum. It's the gold standard of the occlusives. Number one derm recommended worldwide. The Vaseline locks in up to 99% of skin's natural moisture. And it's completely fragrance-free, hypoallergenic. It's safe for any skin type, even eczema-prone skin on the youngest patient. It creates this protective seal to prevent any sort of transepidermal water loss, keeping that moisture in. So it's going to help soothe any cracked peeling lips almost instantly. It works really well if you layer it on top of a serum or a lighter balm for that added protection."
Say Goodbye to Dry Winter Skin: Dermatologist-Approved Bodycare Tips
"If your skin is extra dry and you just don't feel like after you apply this moisturizer on it's enough, consider applying a coat of Vaseline on top. These are things like Vaseline, Aquaphor or CeraVe Healing Ointment, and Aquaphor even comes in a spray bottle that you can put directly on top of that cream to provide extra protection. It's sealing in that moisture and preventing epidermal water loss."

"Vaseline as an eye cream, this is probably a fantastic idea if you don't get milia around the eye area. I am prone to milia, actually one just fell off a few days ago, so if you're prone to milia this might not be the best idea for you. But if you're not and you have dry crepey eyes or under eyes you might want to give this a go. It's probably not something that I'll do very often but it's worth a try if you have crepey under eyes and you want to help retain the moisture, especially overnight. You could put it on top of your eye cream to help retain transepidermal water loss and keep the under eye hydrated, but again you might want to be careful if you're prone to milia. In the evening as a barrier repair mask, slugging, putting a nice layer of Vaseline on your skin and just going to bed, I actually think this is an excellent idea. You want to make sure you're doing it on clean skin. You don't want to be locking in the dirt from the day or all your sunscreen and makeup from the day, so do your double cleanse, throw on a little bit of Vaseline."

"Vaseline has no staying power. It's not a product that's made to hold anything, keep anything. It's slippery. It slips. You put Vaseline on your lips and it ends up down here eventually. Especially under mascara, this is a recipe for disaster. It is going to be so messy. Vaseline doesn't act differently on your lashes than it does your skin. It isn't a different formula. It just sits on top of stuff. So there's no reason why Vaseline would have any curling power or staying power in terms of your lashes. Absolutely none. Oily eyelids already melt our makeup. And if you're not using an eyeshadow primer, that oil can transfer into your lashes, to your bottom lashes. That oily slippery formula is not good around the eye area. If you want longevity of your makeup, if you want your mascara to last a long time, your eyeliner to last a long time, you don't want to put anything slippery or greasy or oily."

"Petrolatum jelly otherwise known as Vaseline has been used for ages by the African-American Community as well as by people who struggle with eczema or psoriasis. It's basically this occlusive petroleum-based product that gets put on the skin and protects it from the outside world. It's used in wound healing and it really is wonderful. It's not dangerous or toxic or anything like that, but it's fragrance free, really inexpensive, and it works very well for a sealant on skin. Some people also use this along with their retinoids if you put this on first and then put a retinoid on it's a way to buffer a retinoid if you are prone to the itching, the peeling and the redness of retinization. But you could also put your retinoid on first and use this to seal things in, especially if you use hyaluronic acid or hydrators. A lot of people use petrolatum jelly which is the refined version of petroleum jelly to seal that in."

Heal Dry & Cracked Hands & Feet with This Quick Dermatologist Tip
"A petrolatum based product so Vaseline or you can even do if you want to do a cave or say aquafor healing ointments but something thick and greasy. What you're going to do at night before you sleep you want to soak your hands and or feet or both in lukewarm water for about 5 minutes until they're kind of wrinkly and damp. The soaking helps to hydrate the skin and if your skin is really thick and crusty it may even help to remove some of that crust. Afterwards pat your skin dry and then literally immediately before it is completely dry lather on a really good layer of the petrolatum product all over your hands and feet and then you want to occlude them with your gloves and your socks and if you can sleep in that overnight. This soaking smear method over time will help to toughen your skin and you can even use like a pumice stone or a file to remove some of the dust over time after it's been softened."

"Vaseline is not going to help take off your makeup; it might help keep it in because it's a barrier. There's no evidence to show that putting Vaseline on eyelashes and eyebrows helps grow it. It just gives you a little bit of coverage on the hair follicles and hair shaft, giving you the illusion that it's a little bit thicker, but it's not actually going to thicken the hair. That said, it can make things feel quite nice, and especially if you've got dry sensitive skin around the eyes and you suffer from perioral dermatitis, then applying Vaseline over that area can help the skin barrier repair. On the other hand, you have to be careful with putting Vaseline around the eye area because where it blocks and forms a protective film that blocks the skin, you can be at risk of getting things like milia, which are little milk spots around that area."

"It's one ingredient but it's knowing formulations, yeah, it's pretty inexpensive oil, so what it's priced at is quite a high price point. What's good about Vaseline, firstly it's the most occlusive one. It's the least allergenic one, so you're less likely to get any allergies to it, and it's the least irritating one. However, it is the least hydrating one, so it locks in the moisture that you already have in your skin but it doesn't bring any additional moisture to the skin. So if you're looking for something that's just for hydration, I would say that Vaseline would be my least favorite."

"You can put this on a burn or a scrape for better healing. Vitamin E is in a lot of skincare products nowadays, so I thought let's give this a go and see what it does, and honestly this performs just the same as Aquaphor but it really does have that extra kick to it to really keep everything nice and comfortable. If you have dry irritated lips then put this on your lips. I've been putting this on my lips every night. I will put a little bit around the crows feet area just to prevent transepidermal water loss. At night time after I've put all of my skincare products on including my eye cream I will put a little bit of this just around that eye area just to lock in moisture. If I have any dry patches on my skin like my chin or my skin is just feeling really uncomfortable then I will put a thin layer of this all over my face on top of my moisturizer as that slugging effect, and this does an excellent job. Of course you can put this on your hands, your feet, anywhere on the body. It's basically used the same as Aquaphor but it has that additional vitamin E ingredient, and I love this. This is now a staple in my routine from this day going forward."

"Petrolatum is the gold standard occlusive, it's really good at sealing water. Your skin can get dried out and itchy and tight and this helps prevent that. On top of that, more hydrated skin can also let in some skincare ingredients a bit more easily into the skin, so this can also have an effect of helping your skincare ingredients penetrate a bit more deeply. I do like this because it is a very cheap hack and a lot of people do have a jar of Vaseline lying around that they will never get to the bottom of, so it is something that I think most people can try without too much risk. The downsides of this is first off your skin gets really sticky and your hair and cat fur."

So yeah this test just doesn't mean anything, and even if you do have water pH only tells you about one tiny aspect of a product. The hydrogen ion concentration. Products are really complex, you can't really say if something is going to work or not just based on pH."
