Dr Dray has reviewed more sensitive skin products than almost anyone in the space. Out of 293, she approved 218, gave 45 mixed takes, and skipped 30. Her Guru Score for this category sits at 74%. That record tells you a lot about what she thinks actually works for reactive, easily-upset skin.
What does Dr Dray recommend for sensitive skin?
She keeps coming back to fragrance-free formulas with a clean, minimal irritant list. Colloidal oatmeal, ceramides, glycerin, ectoin, and beta-glucan turn up again and again in products she rates well. Those ingredients help hold moisture in the skin and keep the barrier intact, which matters most when skin is sensitive. She praised the Remedy Intense Hydration Multi-Depth Moisture Advanced Hydrating Serum for its peptide-rich, low-irritation lineup and called it her favourite from that brand. The Aveeno Calm + Restore Oat Gel Moisturizer is her all-time top drugstore moisturizer pick. She also loves the Eucerin Eczema Relief Body Cream for its colloidal oatmeal and ceramide base. Affordability comes up too: she notices when a formula delivers strong actives at a fair price, and she says so.
In her words
"This is Remedy's new Intense Hydration Multi-Depth Moisture Advanced Hydrating Serum. The first thing I noticed was the texture, it's very lightweight but it doesn't feel watery, and it's not heavy, greasy, or suffocating either, it's a nice balance of the two. It's a great hydration serum for these transition months, lightweight enough that it's not oppressive but it imparts a nice degree of long lasting hydration to support the skin barrier. A dime size amount is all I needed to cover my whole face and neck, so I think this bottle is going to last a long time. I use it around my eye area too since it's just hydration with nothing irritating. It has a really nice ingredient lineup, ectoin, glycerin, lactobacillus ferment filtrate, polyglutamic acid, beta glucan, superoxide dismutase, and peptides like acetyl hexapeptide-8 and palmitoyl tripeptide-5. My experience with this serum has overall been very good and very positive and I've really enjoyed it, it layers nicely at night before my retinoid and in the morning before sunscreen. I'd classify this as a low irritation potential product, it doesn't have fragrance or anything that tends to cause irritation. I've seen it going anywhere from seventeen to twenty dollars for an ounce, which with the polyglutamic acid and the peptide in it is pretty reasonable. I think this is Remedy's best serum to date, arguably my favorite product from them yet."
"I happen to be a huge fan of the Eucerin Eczema Relief. It's a colloidal oatmeal based product with ceramide, and colloidal oatmeal is a great skin protectant that helps reduce water loss from the skin. It also has glycyrrhiza inflata root extract from licorice root, which is helpful for people who have eczema or very sensitive skin, and its anti-inflammatory properties can help with hyperpigmentation and redness. It's free of fragrance, which is a common allergen that can be particularly problematic for people who have eczema."
"These products in this line from Aveeno, calm and restore, are top dog. I especially love the calm and restore serum."
"My top drugstore moisturizer favorite of all time is the Aveeno Calm + Restore Oat Gel Moisturizer with Senella Colloidal Oat. This is a gel cream, a texture I personally rather enjoy. Fragrance-free. It has a bit of an oaty aroma, which some people have noted they don't care for, but I enjoy. I associate that smell with a smooth, hydrated skin barrier, so I really like it."
"Altruist came out with a facial moisturizer that has shea butter and urea in it, and it's very good, I highly recommend it. It's free of fragrance, and this brand gives a portion of their proceeds to a charity that supports people living with albinism. Everything this brand has made has been top-notch. It's lightweight, and the consistency is not heavy or greasy, though if you have very sensitive skin, the urea might sting a little bit."
"This is a fragrance-free moisturizing cream that markets itself as an overnight spa mask. It's a bit more lightweight compared to barrier jellies, but it's an excellent option for hydrating the skin, reducing water loss, dryness and irritation. It has niacinamide and rice extract which is soothing and moisturizing, and it always delivers a bang for very little buck because it's a pretty affordable option as well. It's got allantoin and glycerin as well, moisturizing, hydrating, soothing ingredients. I highly recommend it."

What has Dr Dray skipped for sensitive skin?
The three skips worth knowing about each have a clear reason. She skipped Paula's Choice Calm Rescue and Repair Intensive Moisturizer because a formula change left her skin feeling dry, and she stopped recommending it after that. Paula's Choice Ultra Gentle Cleanser got a skip because too much glycerin made it clump and spread poorly, which means it simply could not clean the face well. SkinBetter Science AlphaRet Overnight Cream she skipped on evidence grounds: she said the study behind its key retinoid ester had no vehicle control, so there was no way to know whether the retinoid itself was doing anything or whether the results were just from the moisturising ingredients alongside it.
"A long time ago I reviewed the CeraVe micellar water, I hated it, it burned my eyes like none other."
"The rescue and repair intensive moisturizer left my skin feeling dry, plain and simple, it was not good whatsoever, which really disappoints me because I loved their previous moisturizers in this Calm line. I used to recommend that moisturizer, and now I no longer recommend it since they changed it, so that was definitely a fail for me."
"The Ultra Gentle Cleanser was an epic fail for me. It's described as a cushioning cleanser, but I think they put too much glycerin in it because the lathering is completely off, it clumps up and doesn't distribute over the surface of the skin well, which is exactly what a cleanser is supposed to do. That said, when you rinse it off the skin does not feel dry or irritated, it does feel soft and clean, but if you don't already do a pre-cleanse you're going to have a difficult time adequately cleansing your face with this. Honestly I think the whole formulation is completely out of whack, and they completely ruined this from Paula."
"They claim their ethyl lactoretinoid, a conjugate of retinoid retinoic acid and lactic acid, will get into your skin and be slowly converted to the active form while minimizing irritation, but I have yet to see a study showing this compound actually gets into the skin and converts to retinoic acid, or any biomarkers or skin biopsy evidence that it truly works to increase collagen production. The study they have is poorly controlled with no vehicle control, so you cannot tell if the improvements in wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and redness are from the retinoid ester or from all the other ingredients like niacinamide, glycolic acid, green tea extract, CoQ10, and hyaluronic acid, which all can achieve these same endpoints. I believe the results are simply because it is a good moisturizer, and I am not convinced by this product whatsoever."
