What the gurus are saying

This sunscreen earns consistent praise for its invisible, cushiony texture and mattifying finish that works beautifully under makeup, though some find it initially feels oily or streaky on application. Most gurus love how it blends seamlessly and doesn't leave a white cast or greasy shine, making it a gateway product for people who usually skip sunscreen. However, cost per ounce and the use of US chemical filters are sticking points for a few reviewers, and those with very sensitive skin or a strong preference for mineral formulas may want to explore alternatives like Korean sunscreens instead.

"She's going in with a sunscreen, which I'm really glad to see. This one is a US chemical sunscreen. I'm personally not a fan of chemical sunscreens just because there's a higher risk for irritation and iffy evidence about their sustainability. However, Super Goop does have great mineral sunscreen formulas as well. But as I've always said, the most important sunscreen is the sunscreen you'll actually use every day. It doesn't matter what my opinions or anyone else's opinions is. The most important thing is that you're protecting your skin. So I'm really glad to see that she is doing that."

"I love that she's using sunscreen, but I don't love that sunscreen because it's a USA chemical sunscreen. Also the texture of it isn't necessarily my favorite. I actually recommend as a substitute Korean sunscreens instead, like the Beauty of Joseon SPF50 or the Anessa SPF50, because they add a nice level of hydration into the skin but still have absolutely zero white cast and won't leave that kind of slippery, slick feeling on the skin."
Nara Smith's Skin Care Routine Is Crazy...
"The sunscreen she uses is the Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen, one of the bestselling sunscreens of all time. It's ironic that she's using that formula because that's a chemical sunscreen, and mineral sunscreens are what natural DIY people are constantly [...] saying you need to use instead, to avoid chemical sunscreens because they're toxic and dangerous. [...] I've never recommended chemical sunscreens on my channel because there's conflicting data about how they can contribute to the erosion of coral reefs, which is why I just opt to stay away from it. Chemical sunscreen filters can be significantly more irritating to the skin. [...] That sunscreen also has silicones and other chemicals that her community will very often label as toxic, when they're not."

"It really is invisible on the skin. It feels kind of like a primer because it has a lot of silicones in it. I personally don't love it because it's a chemical UV sunscreen, but I totally understand why people love it."
This Might Be The Most Expensive Routine Yet...
"As far as the Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen goes, I'm not a personal fan of it. I think a lot of the sunscreen filters used in it can be irritating to the skin and really sensitizing. I'd personally recommend a Korean sunscreen instead."

"Unseen is actually a great sunscreen. It's water resistant, clear, colorless, it has this cushiony feel, it's not shiny, it's not greasy, it does really well in humidity, great as a base under makeup. It's a lot for a lot of people, it's their Holy Grail sunscreen. I do really like Unseen."

"First up is from Supergoop, it is their ultra popular Unseen Sunscreen. This is an organic sunscreen, it does not leave a cast, it is clear, colorless, this formula. It is water resistant up to 40 minutes and it feels lightweight on the skin surface. It is similar to the Trader Joe's sunscreen that I reviewed a few years ago, in fact that Trader Joe's sunscreen is kind of thought to be like a dupe of this. In my opinion this is one of their best sunscreens, and if you are looking for an absolute no cast sunscreen that you can wear on the face, try this one out. It's really popular here in Houston, I've had so many people tell me that this is like their Holy Grail sunscreen. I think because it plays really well in the humid environment here, it doesn't feel heavy or greasy."

"If you want zero white cast, it's going to be the Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen. This is a chemical sunscreen, but it comes out clear and colorless, zero, absolute zero white cast. It has isododecane in it, which offers this nice cushiony texture to the formula and provides a pore blurring effect while helping to reduce transepidermal water loss and smooth down dry, rough skin. It helps not only as a moisturizing ingredient, but it is a nice base for your makeup. I'm able to wear this on my face around my eyes no problem. But if you are sensitive to chemical sunscreens, this might not be a great choice for you."
Stop Wasting Money! My Top 5 Affordable Skincare Dupes That Actually Perform
"A sunscreen that I like and I frequently recommend, especially around the time of the Sephora sale, is the Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen. This is an amazing formula, without a doubt. It's clear, it's colorless, there's no white cast to be had. It comes out clear and colorless, you can see through the formula as it's coming out. What I have always loved about this is that it's got this kind of cushiony feel to it. It really smooths out the surface of the skin. It's very silicone rich, and because of that it helps to diminish the appearance of pores. It really has this very nice demi matte finish without being cloyingly drying like a lot of matte mineral sunscreens. This is a chemical sunscreen. It's water resistant for 40 minutes, so it's great for humidity. It's really popular here in Houston. When I talk to people all the time, I ask them about their sunscreen, and this is one that I find many people use, but they always say, 'Yeah, it's expensive though.' And it is. [...] It's $38 for 1.7 ounces."

"It is a 100% zero white cast, it comes out looking like a clear gel and it goes on cast-free. It's very moisturizing, it's free of fragrance, it's water resistant up to 40 minutes so it's a good choice for humidity on days where you are participating in sport, maybe sweating a bit, this will stand up well. I am always able to tolerate this really well around the eyes. The nice thing about this particular formula is it also has kind of this pore blurring effect and so it smooths out the skin surface. It doesn't look greasy or shiny. It serves as a nice base for makeup as well. If you have an oily skin type, this type of formula, this type of vehicle tends to go over well because it has sort of a de-gassing property to it without being drying and simultaneously being quite moisturizing in terms of reducing water loss."
Neutrogena Invisible Gel Sunscreen SPF 40 Review | Zero White Cast
"This is very similar to the Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen, just less expensive."
Sephora Savings Event 2023 - Skincare Products Worth Buying
"There are many Supergoop sunscreens and many of them are actually pretty good, but they are expensive. Are they worth it? Well, there's always going to be a drugstore, more affordable alternative. But if you are interested in Supergoop sunscreen, the most popular one, and the one I think is really sophisticated and goes over well, especially here in Texas with the humidity, is the Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen. This is a clear, colorless, organic AKA chemical sunscreen, zero white cast. It is SPF 40, water resistant up to 40 minutes, so it's a great option again for the humidity, because that water resistance factor just helps it stay on the skin a little bit better through sweat and humidity."
Korean Foot Cream I'm Loving!
"For my sunscreen, I'm doing the Supergoop Unseen. [...] This formula is really nice, [...] that clear, colorless, cushiony consistency. There's no cast here, you don't even have to think about a white cast, there's no chalkiness whatsoever. It's completely clear, colorless, no fragrance. It has like a pore blurring effect, it softens and smooths the skin."
Using A Clay Mask For Oily Skin
"For my sunscreen, I am coming in with the Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen. [...] This is one of my favorite sunscreens from Supergoop, although I have to say the Trader Joe's dupe of this is just as good. But I got this recently. I like how it's clear and colorless. It's very cushiony too, it's very silicone-y, so it has like a pore blurring effect to it."

"Supergoop's Unseen Sunscreen is super popular. A lot of people swear up and down by it. It's actually really popular amongst people that I know in Texas and Houston, because at least in Houston we have a very humid climate, and it withstands the humidity quite well. No cast, clear, colorless, just really comfortable. Doesn't aggravate people's skin for the most part, although that is very individualized. It is pricier."

NEW TRADER JOE'S SUNSCREEN DUPE FOR SUPERGOOP UNSEEN 😮 DERMATOLOGIST@DrDrayzday
"I love this formula, the Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen. I've used it and, honestly, I see no difference in appearance, texture, feel, look, or wear compared to the new Trader Joe's dupe. It comes out clear and translucent with a soft, silky, satiny finish and a pore blurring effect, and it's a fantastic option as a base for makeup. It's also great for hair bearing skin, like eyebrows or a beard, since it doesn't cake or leave residue the way some other sunscreens do. It has never burned around my eyes, though people who are sensitive to chemical sunscreens around the eyes may still feel some discomfort."
SEPHORA 2021 SALE PICKS (skin care & hair care)| Dr Dray
"This is a really popular chemical sunscreen and the formulation is really nice if you have oily acne-prone skin because it's formulated with silicone which reduces shine and isododecane which is a nice emollient with a pore-blurring effect. It does not leave any cast. It may burn or sting around the eyes for some people because chemical sunscreens can be a little irritating, but it works pretty well under makeup. It's a very nice formulation and looks nice on the skin and it's moisturizing without being greasy or heavy."

"Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen is a silicone-based sunscreen that initially feels oily when you put it on, but it sets in a mattifying way. [...] It sits almost like a primer on the skin, and because of the silicone, the way it reflects light makes it mattifying. [...] When you run your finger over the skin, it does feel oily, but it doesn't look oily in my opinion. So I think this is a good mattifying option."

"The company who started clear sunscreens is Supergoop, so they're the goat. Actually, this year they reformulated their original Unseen, and I still really, really like it. If you're somebody who uses Unseen, you're still going to love that product, it's still phenomenal. [...] It feels a little [...] thick, kind of like greasy, almost like it's borderline ointment in a sense, but it's still one of the [...] invisible sunscreens that's going to blend well with your skin."

"My bougie version for the chemical sunscreen is an OG, it is your Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen. [...] This sunscreen starts out invisible and it stays invisible. It feels hydrating, [...] it is invisible, it feels good when you put it on, it sits and sets nicely. [...] As the original OG, it will certainly blend with all skin types. I think this deserves a continued mention because of that fact."

ULTIMATE SUNSCREEN WAR: Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen vs. Trader Joe's Sunscreen
"I love this sunscreen. I think we highlighted this in our best sunscreens of all time video. It blends really well, just seamless, no real odor to it. It's invisible and matte like you have no shine. If you're somebody who doesn't like shine, it just absolutely no shine. It's like a primer texture, it's just nothing that you've never felt anything like it quite like it. There's no cast, it was just invisible from the get-go. So, absolutely invisible."
BEST SUNSCREENS EVER?! | Doctorly Reviews
"I can say with 1,000% confidence that no one will have a white cast from this product. It is completely clear, even out of the bottle, which is amazing. It does leave a little bit of like a primer finish, like it feels like primer when you're using it. Some people don't like the texture of it, but this thing is completely invisible. I mean, it's really really an amazing sunscreen."

"Supergoop is a pretty popular brand, but I never thought any of their products were revolutionary. Not really Supergoop's fault, but the US chemical filters are just kind of sad, and I haven't been overly impressed with any of their mineral sunscreens either. In general I find most chemical sunscreens are more elegant and easy to apply and generally more efficient and effective than most mineral ones."

"I'd replace this forty four dollar Supergoop sunscreen with the ten dollar Neutrogena Ultra Sheer SPF. Both are lightweight, invisible and non greasy, and Neutrogena actually has higher SPF and water resistance. The core function is the same. One is at Target, the other is at Sephora."

"My wife's all-time favorite is the Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen, water resistant 40 minutes, SPF 40. It's a higher price point, but she loves how invisible it really is. It's truly invisible, it just disappears quickly. She finds it layers really nicely with her makeup as well, putting makeup right over it serves as a great primer. Every year I talk about that being her still her favorite."

"This is my wife's favorite sunscreen. She [...] still loves the Supergoop Unseen. It's SPF 40, PA+++, water resistant 40 minutes. She says it layers so well with her makeup, it's a great primer, makes your skin feel smooth. It really is invisible, this clear gel. I've made other videos on it comparing it to the dupes like the Kroger brand, which is not good at all. [...] It's worth the price for her. This one is 1.7 fluid ounces, it is more of a higher price point, but she loves the texture of it and I can see why."

"It comes in different colors, so clearly you want the dark shade for deeper skin. [...] This is the only one that I can recommend. I've tried so many of these. [...] The reason I recommend this one and can't recommend any others: [...] with these mineral powder products you use to reapply your sunscreen over your makeup, they're great because they help take down shine and let you reapply your sunscreen over makeup, but if the product packaging isn't on point, you can wind up depositing a whole bunch of powder on one part of your face. This is one where I've tried it and it gives you a nice even application. It's almost impossible to mess up with this one. I've tried cheaper ones and gotten big deposits of powder all over the place, and that's obviously not what you want. [...] This is the best one so far. [...] And obviously you want the dark one if you have deeper skin."

I'm Both in LOVE and DISAPPOINTED in these Sunscreens
"The Unseen sunscreen mineral has a matte finish. My skin has been a little bit on the drier side, and I did find that this might be better suited for someone with oilier skin, or if you have oily skin but you're kind of dry in the colder months, maybe you just wait till the summer time to use it. Once I had it on I was like okay this doesn't look crazy, and when I went to go wipe it off, the difference in how it takes down my skin's radiance is very apparent."
From DRY, TEXTURED Skin to GLASS Skin in DAYS & YOU Can Do It, Too
"You could use something like a silicone, [...] the one that everybody loves, Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen. [...] Something that you can put on top. [...] Moisturizers with sunscreen count too, anything that has SPF in it counts as SPF, as long as you put on enough, and enough is 2mg of sunscreen per centimeter square of skin, which is about a quarter to a half a teaspoon for your face, neck and ears."
~Yay
"My second choice for sunscreen is the Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen. I love this one because it's more mattifying. It hydrates my skin but it acts like a really nice primer, especially to fill in those little fine lines around the eyes or in my smile lines. It offers broad spectrum SPF protection, it is SPF 40 PA+++. [...] If it's summertime and my skin is really oily, I am probably going to use the Unseen Sunscreen on days that I'm expecting to wear my makeup for long periods of time, or if I'm going to be sitting filming YouTube or something like that."

"One of their best and I would say most iconic products is their unseen sunscreen, purely because everyone can use it, it works great as a sunscreen, a lot of clear sunscreens can be very greasy and oily looking, this one isn't, in my opinion, and it doesn't sting my eyes."
~Yay
"It feels really good on your skin, really no white cast, just a very comfortable type of product, and that's one of the reasons why I rated it so high. It's not my most favorite sunscreen, or maybe the most protective one out there, [...] or the most innovative, but this has definitely been an entryway to daily sunscreen for a lot of people. This is the gateway drug for a lot of people who are used to shopping for their cosmetics at Sephora especially. This is one of the best sunscreens available there, and I think for a lot of people this is the first time they've experienced a sunscreen that feels elegant, that feels breathable, that feels comfortable, that feels like a product they don't mind putting on every single day. I can't discount the product for doing that. That's awesome."

"I love the Unseen Sunscreen from Supergoop. It feels good on my face, it's not heavy, I'm not overpowered by fragrance, it doesn't leave me shiny, and it provides 40 minutes of water resistance. But at 38 dollars for 50 milliliters it's the most expensive sunscreen by the ounce of all four I tested, and because of that I think the Trader Joe's dupe beats it out. I do love Supergoop, but it's probably my third favorite of the four."
~Yay
"My two top picks for sunscreen from Sephora are a mineral sunscreen, the Mirad City Skin age defense four pluses SPF 50 mineral sunscreen which is soothing and calming to the skin, and another favorite is the one I travel with all the time, the Unseen Sunscreen by Supergoop, and this is a chemical sunscreen."

"I know so many people who don't normally like sunscreen love this product and it's by Supergoop, it's the Unseen Sunscreen. This is the sunscreen that has almost like a primer-like feel to it so it's almost like silicone, it's very plushy, it's very mattifying, and it really is nice under makeup. For people who don't like the traditional cream or lotion type sunscreens, I find the Unseen Sunscreen is such a hit. Also with the guys, they love this because it's not like, you know, a lot of guys don't wear makeup primer so they've never felt that sort of silicone texture but it's actually something a lot of them enjoy."

"This next thing is a sunscreen. What I used it for is when I'm on vacation and I want my makeup to last, I actually love it as a primer even though it's sunscreen. This is the Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen, it's their clear, like, chemical sunscreen. You guys know I love to stick to mineral sunscreens usually, but I do use this one for certain situations. This has a really beautiful texture, it's very smoothing. I don't know what it is about this, you guys, but this makes my makeup last so much longer, especially in like humid, hot weather, so I always pack this on vacation with me as my primer."

"Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen is one that I actually personally dislike very much. But people love her, they absolutely love her. She's 48 dollars, she's SPF 40. It is also a physical sunscreen, a chemical sunscreen. I don't like her because it's just way too slippery for me. There's too much silicone, there's too much slip."

"This is their Unseen Sunscreen that actually has a very similar texture to the original Unseen Sunscreen however the ingredients are different. These don't have any organic or chemical filters in them, they only have the physical or mineral ones at zinc oxide 17.42% and titanium dioxide at 1.33%. They do say that it helps with the sunburn, it's an SPF 40 as we expect and it does feel pretty nice on my skin. It's $40 [...] for the packet. "This unseen sunscreen took the Internet by storm and for good reason. It is a clear Vaseline texture fluid that just soaks into skin. It feels like a makeup primer and it is totally invisible on literally every single skin tone. It's not like white and it blends out as you can see, it's literally clear and it stays clear. It gives you kind of a dewy sheen, it's absolutely gorgeous. [...] It's an amazing formula and yes it's worth the money but it's expensive at 38 to 48 dollars depending on where you get it."

"I love the super goop, but this soaked through the entire cloth and it has left a grease stain on the table. Super goop is getting super goopy. I love the sunscreen, but like, wow, super goop is very very oily. If you have oily prone skin, seeing the visual and seeing how quickly everything in here spread, be aware of that this has high high high high oil content. But as you can see from the texture, like this tenses up on the skin and this fills in pores literally like a primer in the way that a lot of other sunscreens don't."

The texture of it is a little bit like Vaseline, like a little bit of petrolatum jelly. It kind of feels like a hydrating primer, but it is completely sheer, SPF 40. It is so good. The reason why is because if you have flakes that are sticking up, this helps to smooth them over. It works so beautifully and it feels so good on the skin. I really love this, and especially because I know that the price is a little bit steep, but if you can get this on sale, that's when I would stock up."

"Some really good UVA products are actually these which I tested out side by side. We've got the Supergoop as well as the Trader Joe's. Both of these have avobenzone at three percent."
How to Get Glass Skin Even If You Have Texture or Acne
"This one is a little bit more lightweight. This is the Zinc Screen from Super Goop. It is wonderful. It kind of has this tint that smooths over the skin but it's also very lightweight so if you are oily, this is fantastic."
⭐ Reading 1 Star Reviews Of My Favorite Skincare Products!
"I like this sunscreen quite a bit, but it has more than 9000 reviews on Sephora and most are overwhelmingly positive, but there are some people that just don't like this formula. I have very oily acne prone skin and this doesn't always work for me unless I'm using it like as a makeup primer, so super fair. Some people say the formulation makes it sit on the skin like you're wearing a layer of oil, it also causes pores to clog up after a couple of days of use and results in a bad breakout. Others say it leaves an oily touch to their skin or it feels like putting Vaseline on the face, and it doesn't dry, it just stays sticky all day."

"Their unseen sunscreen is the authentic version that Kylie Skin tried to rip off. And that is like a primer on the face. It is so good. Supergoop feels so good on skin. It's like a not sunscreen brand. It feels so good. It doesn't get goopy. It doesn't usually sting or burn the eyes. All of their formulations are done just so well that they are a sunscreen company that doesn't feel like sunscreen."
They Said, “This Is The Best Skincare Of 2021” but I Disagree | Critiquing/Correcting Allure Awards
"The Super Goop Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40 is amazing. It is completely clear whether you have the blackest most ebony skin or if you are the palest Celtic person most allergic to the sun, this Super Goop sunscreen is going to be it. It is a little bit creamy, it goes on kind of like a primer, it can go under makeup. This is a really amazing product as long as you don't have blemishes or irritation. They know how to make sunscreen. It's cruelty-free, relatively affordable, very nice on skin, with absolute zero flashback. This product is phenomenal and for makeup lovers or just people who want to look great, it actually kind of smooths over pores. It has a high amount of dimethicone that helps to smooth out our pores and make them look a little bit invisible."

"When you squeeze it out it is completely clear. This sort of formula is usually used in pore filling makeup primers and honestly I don't really like these formulas. I find them really hard to apply or rather they're kind of too easy to apply so they glide on really nicely but I can't get the full amount onto my face. [...] With these sorts of formulas it kind of feels like I'm spreading icing on my face and it feels like it's sitting on my skin in a really thick layer, sort of like I'm slugging and it's not sinking in and I'm just like moving it around endlessly. [...] These formulas use a lot of isododecane as the solvent which is volatile and so that evaporates as the sunscreen dries down. [...] There is like this sort of solventy smell but that goes away pretty quickly. One thing I do really appreciate about these silicone formulas is how matte they are when you put them on, [...] but on my skin at least it kind of feels like it just doesn't ever set properly. It feels like I have this film on my skin even though it does look matte. It just sort of feels greasier than it looks. I also feel like some of it comes off on my fingers when I brush against it even hours later. But if you have dry skin these do tend to do better and they have a really nice smoothing sort of makeup priming effect. So I can see why this is so popular [...] but it's just not really for me."

"This is invisible because it's more clear than anything. The feel of this is actually more close to a primer than a sunscreen and that's why this one wears tremendously well under makeup. It feels very velvety on the skin once you rub it in, it is weightless and it is absolutely invisible since it's colorless so it's going to work for all skin tones. This one is actually not a mineral sunscreen, this has chemical filters in it but it does not have any oxybenzone in it at all. This also has other skin care packed ingredients in it to improve the texture of the skin like frankincense and metal foam seed. This is extremely invisible but it's not a zinc or titanium dioxide based product but it is very unique."

How To Shop For Supergoop! Sunscreen | Product Reviews by The Budget Dermatologist
"Unseen is the top bestselling sunscreen and it gets incredible reviews across the board. It's great for all skin types. This sunscreen is the closest thing to a weightless and invisible sunscreen, and it has no scent to it that you typically associate with sunscreen products. If you wear makeup, this is the best sunscreen for under makeup because it's so weightless and can serve as your primer to help your makeup stay in place and wear the most naturally on your skin. This is a staple and you will not regret having this in your stockpile."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Sunscreen filters

Sun protection is the best evidenced way to slow visible ageing, and the filters are what does the work. Mineral and chemical filters both protect when a product is applied thickly enough and often enough, which is where most people fall short rather than on the choice of filter.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
