What the gurus are saying

This micellar water earns near-universal praise for being non-irritating enough for sensitive, rosacea-prone, and acne-prone skin, while effectively removing makeup and sunscreen as a first cleanse or standalone step. Dermatologists and estheticians consistently recommend it for its convenience and affordability, though a couple of gurus note it can sting around the eyes or that the fragrance may bother some people. Most suggest using it on a cotton pad to swipe the face, and it works across all skin types without requiring a water rinse afterward.

"Bioderma has a micellar water for acne-prone skin. It's one of the two brands I've tried and trust for micellar water, and I'd recommend trying it for double cleansing instead of jumping on the oil cleansing bandwagon."

"I've got my Bioderma micellar water, this is a staple, I've already gone through an entire one before, which is hard to do since it's large, but it's so good, specifically the combination and oily one, I absolutely love that."

"I definitely recommend the Bioderma Sensibio micellar water. That one has consistently been the best one that I've ever tried. It's gentle on the skin. It works well. And it's basically the same process as using a makeup wipe, but with cotton rounds, you just throw them in the wash and reuse them. And in combination with the affordable price point of a micellar water, it's so much more cost effective than buying makeup wipes."

The BEST Cleansers of 2021!
"The Bioderma Sensibio cleansing water is awesome, it's bomb. It's known in the industry to be one of the best and I fully support that statement. It's a really good one if you're looking for good makeup removal but cleansing oils or cleansing balms aren't really your thing. Just make sure you use it with reusable cotton rounds because they're better for the environment."

"The Bioderma Cleansing Water has always been a favorite of mine."

"Number one is the Bioderma Sensibio H2O Micellar Water. It is my true ride or die. I literally cannot tell you how many bottles of this I have gone through over the last decade. Micellar water works through these little cleansing molecules called micelles that help lift off dirt and oil and debris off of the skin. So, it is a cleansing step in my routine. Some people will use this as the entire way that they cleanse their face. I really do it as a first cleansing step before I go in with like a soapy cleanser. For me, this is how I get all the benefits of a makeup wipe without actually having to use a makeup wipe. You shake up the bottle really well. I pour it onto a cotton pad and then I swipe over my entire face, neck. Sometimes I'll even bring it down to my chest if I've put makeup there as well. Especially for days where maybe you're not going to take a shower in the evening, this is just like a great way to reach all of the places without maybe getting as messy as you might with a cleansing balm or a cleansing oil. It's just so incredibly convenient, non-irritating, super affordable. I recommend it all the time to my patients. Even for like my teenage patients who maybe aren't the best at cleansing their skin consistently, I just tell the parents, 'Hey, give them a cotton pad with some micellar water on it. They can swipe and at bare minimum, they have significantly cleansed their face.' And this type of skincare product is going to work for everyone. Whether you're rosacea prone, you're acne prone, you have mature skin, you have sensitive skin. It's just great all around."

"One of my absolute favorite ways to remove makeup quickly is with micellar water. If you've been on this channel for any amount of time you know I have a love affair with the Bioderma water. You basically just shake it onto a cotton pad, wipe wipe wipe. It's just so much more gentle than a makeup wipe. Yeah, I would rather you use a makeup wipe over nothing, but I would prefer that you use something like micellar water, which is a lot more gentle and doesn't leave your skin feeling tight or irritated."
My Sensitive Skin Nighttime Skincare Routine as a Dermatologist | Dr. Sam Ellis
"One of my absolute favorite cleansers for sensitive skin and honestly just like favorite cleansers in general is the Bioderma Sensibio H2O Micellar Water. I go through one of these probably once every four to six months. [...] I particularly love this for sensitive skin because it has very few ingredients, so very few things to potentially be sensitive to. [...] If you're potentially trying to sus out if you have an allergy or an irritation reaction to something in one of your products, if you're working with something that has 10 or fewer ingredients, that does make that process a little easier. This is also fragrance-free. [...] There are a lot of people that have sensitivities to fragrance or it can make you sensitive to other things in your products, so why not just take it out of the equation. [...] You can think of it like a makeup remover, gentle cleanser all in one. I like to put it on a cotton round, saturate the cotton round with it, and then [...] gently swipe it over my face."

"I will use my Bioderma micellar water on a cotton pad, and I typically will do this if I'm wearing like a ton of makeup, and then I'll go in with my prequel cleanser. The beauty of a double cleanse like this is that all the steps, all of the products you're using are super gentle, so you're not stripping your skin even though you're cleansing twice and very thoroughly."
Summer Skincare Empties: Tower 28, K18, Prequel, & More! | Dr. Sam Ellis
"The Bioderma micellar water was part of my Holy Grail skincare and it continues to be a staple for me. I use this as a first cleanse to remove makeup or sunscreen. I often put it on a cotton pad and swipe it over my face or eyes, and if I have heavy eye makeup, it's really nice to go in with something like this first to get a lot of the gunk off, and then I'll go in with a more gentle cleanser to finish things off. I really like micellar water if you're on the lazier side when it comes to cleansing your face because you can leave this by your nightstand with some cotton pads there, and instead of makeup wipes, this is a nice substitute that's a little less irritating and a lot more gentle on your skin. The thing with micellar water is you actually can leave it on your skin and you don't have to rinse it off. I still like to go in with a double cleanse most nights and rinse it off afterward, but if you're using this as your only cleanse or on the go, you don't have to rinse it off."
Dermatologist's Skincare Tips for People Who Don't Like Skincare | Dr. Sam Ellis
"One of my favorite super easy cleansers to use is the Bioderma Sensibio H2O Micellar Water. [...] You essentially take some of the micellar water, pour it onto a cotton round, and swipe it over the face to help you remove things like sunscreen and the dirt and oils that accumulate on the face over the course of the day. The reason I like this one so much is it's very satisfying to use because if you have any dirt or debris that's on your face you can actually see it come off on the cotton round, and the fact that you see how effective that cleanser is being makes it more likely that you're going to stick with it. I also really like micellar water because it's less messy than washing your face, you're not worried about splashing water all around, and you can also do this anywhere, you don't have to do it in your bathroom. For people who are really bad about being consistent about washing their face, I tell them to just leave some cotton rounds in micellar water on their bedside table and even if they've jumped into bed at night they realize they didn't wash their face, they can reach over and do a two second skincare routine. [...] The other thing that's really nice about micellar water is you don't have to rinse it off."
My Rosacea Journey: Dermatologist Shares Skincare & Treatments That Work! | Dr. Sam Ellis
"I've tried hundreds of cleansers over the years, and to this day, probably one of my most used first cleansing steps is my Bioderma micellar water. I sort of think of this as the gentlest makeup remover, and if you're in the habit of using makeup wipes, I feel like this is a nice transition because it doesn't feel so abrupt. I like to pour my micellar water onto a little cotton round and then swipe it over my face to remove my makeup and my sunscreen at the end of the day, and that really makes me feel like I'm using a makeup wipe but it's so much more gentle on my skin."
What a Dermatologists Packs In a Hospital Bag for Childbirth, Labor, & Delivery | Dr Sam Ellis
"I've poured some of my Bioderma micellar water into pre-soaked cotton pads. Rather than packing up this big thing of micellar water or makeup remover or having to use prepackaged makeup wipes, this is sort of like make your own makeup wipes, and I think this is really good if I feel like I need to just wipe down my face but I can't get out of bed, or if I go into labor in the middle of the day and I show up with makeup on and I want to be able to remove it in the evening, I have this as my go-to."

Dermatologist Shares the Best Order to Apply Your Skincare Products (PM Skincare Routine)
"I'm going to go in with my tried and true Bioderma micellar water. I will often reach for this when I'm feeling a little bit tired or lazy or just don't want to get really wet by rinsing off an oil cleanser. I find that when people report that they don't find that micellar water takes their eye makeup off very well, they're not really letting it soak into their eyelashes or their eye makeup before they're swiping, so that's my little tip for that."

"I have used this product for many years. This is Bioderma Sensibio H2O Micellar Water, it is a pink top micellar water, but do not confuse this one with the Garnier one. The Garnier one looks identical and they can often be confused, but this in my experience is the superior micellar water. [...] It does have a little spice on the skin, very, very light. If you're very sensitive, you're going to feel it. My eyes are extremely sensitive, so I felt it slightly around the eyes. [...] There is some makeup still left behind. It's not great at cleaning your face, but again, it is an active cleanser, so maybe you want to go in first with a gentle cleanser before going in with this."

French Pharmacy Skincare I Love! | Dr. Shereene Idriss
"Bioderma's Sensibio micellar water is superior to the Garnier micellar water in my opinion. It works better and I love it way more than the Garnier one. You still have to wash your face when you use a micellar water because it can leave behind surfactants. Even though you might not wash your face once because you're exhausted, it's Friday night, you might have had one or two martinis and you're tired, it's okay we'll forgive you, but on a regular basis don't use a micellar water without washing your face. But this is my favorite micellar water on the market. I've actually tried another micellar water that I use on my kids when they were babies by Mustela, another Frenchman, and it did not compare to removing makeup as this guy did. I've even tried other brands and I keep coming back to this one."

"I don't be fooled by the pink cap, this one is not Garnier micellar water. Garnier micellar water sucks. I like this one way more than I like the Garnier one."

"I like this one a lot because it is formulated for sensitive skin. It does not contain fragrance, whereas a lot of other French products do. I think that it is extremely, extremely hypoallergenic and it is extremely gentle. So the combination of this and the Vanicream does the job if you're wearing as much makeup as I am currently, which is a very light under-eye concealer, a little bit of powder on my eyes, eyebrow pen, eyeliner, and mascara. These two are actually great for a light makeup day."

"It's Bioderma's Sensibio H2O, and it is my go-to eye makeup remover. So, I have both the huge bottle that sits in the bathroom, and by the way, this is so big. "If I'm wearing eye makeup then I always start with Bioderma Sensibio H2O Micellar Water. I have been using this for years and years and years and I have honestly tried pretty much every micellar water on the market and this one is by far my favorite. It's the biggest damn bottle I ever did see. It's 850 mls, it's almost 30 fluid ounces, and while of course it's a better value, it's really hard to store. I won't be repurchasing this particular size but I will always repurchase this product. I've been using this more than 15 years."

So really nice, short ingredient list, no fragrance in it. If you can rinse it off after use it's better, but if you can't, I get it. You can use a good micellar cleanser to get things off but there's still some that can kind of stick to your skin. So if you can rinse it off it's even better. If not, it's still better than not cleaning at all. Really nice product from Bioderma."

But it is very good and it's free of fragrance. It does what it's supposed to do. You only need a little bit of it on a cotton pad and it helps cleanse away the makeup. I suggest following it up with a gentle cleanser to remove all the residue, but it really does a good job going in there and breaking up the eye makeup without irritating your eyes."

"I tend to use my micellar water and Bioderma has been my go-to lately. I [...] love this, it's almost out. I put this on a cotton round and kind of wipe my face, especially around the eyes to make sure I remove all that nighttime skincare routine. I always make sure I go down my neck and chest."

"Bioderma is a little bit pricier but they're pretty comparable to be honest with you. If you compare the Bioderma and the micellar water, they're very similar."

"I love the micellar water because I feel like it does a good job at removing my nighttime skincare routine but it doesn't irritate my skin. It really might be an overkill but my sensitive skin tolerates it just fine. [...] This particular micellar water also contains fructooligosaccharides to help hydrate and maintain skin barrier. Micellar water dries pretty quick but I do allow it to dry completely before my next step."

"If I'm doing somebody's skin from scratch, probably more on an editorial shoot versus like a celebrity job, I would do Bioderma Sensibio H2O. I'd pass it with the Bioderma on a cotton round. I would put a little bit more pressure in the areas on the face where makeup tends to cling, down the side of the nose, forehead, any little crevices. Then I would mist wipe any excess away."

"French Pharmacy Brands were not a thing over here, you just couldn't get them, you had to go to a French Pharmacy. [...] Things like Bioderma micellar water [...] were products that they used backstage that models had access to, and these amazing sort of French skincare routines. [...] It's really funny that these brands are now mainstream."

"I was leaving remnants of my makeup on even when I thought I've taken it all off, even though I've double cleansed twice. The micellar water, it's the Bioderma one that I use, takes off the remnants so that my skin is squeaky clean in order to be able to then put on moisturizer."

"This is the Bioderma Sensibio H2O Micellar Water, the only product not made in Korea on the bestseller top ten, and it's even 30 percent more expensive than other micellar water from Korean brands. But even super sensitive skin that can't even use a cleansing foam can use this, it's so gentle, and you don't have to wash your face with water afterward, so this one works like a toner too, it's versatile. If you do the double cleanse, this is amazing as the second cleanser."

Olive Young Top 1–3 Products: Overhyped or Actually Worth It?
"I'm still surprised this is on the ranking because compared to other micellar waters, it's from France, so it's pretty pricey. But whenever I've done makeup for a shoot and it's too much work to fully cleanse, I always wipe it off with this, and I can totally understand why people keep coming back to it because it's so mild and easy, very moisturizing, and you don't have to follow up with water cleansing. But you do need to use a cotton pad with this kind of micellar water, which can be a bit too aggressive if your skin barrier isn't strong. So I use it sometimes, but it's not going to be my main cleanser."

"This is a yearly favorite and I have loved this for so many years. This was actually the first product that I started using when I was starting to get into skincare and makeup to remove my makeup at night time or my sunscreen. It is excellent because it is really quick to use. Honestly, you don't have to rinse this off after you've used it. I like to use this for those quick removals of lip stains or lipsticks, or if I have a specific makeup look going on but I want to switch out the lip look for evening. I will use this on a cotton pad or a Q-tip and wipe off that lip product and then go right in with a new lip, and you don't have to rinse this off. If I'm creating that winged out look and need to clean up the edges, I will put this on a cotton pad or Q-tip to clean up that area and make that winged out look more defined."

"This is the bioderma makeup removing micellar water. Now this is extremely gentle even around the eyes, and if I'm having one of those light makeup days, maybe it's one of those no makeup makeup days, I will use this sometimes just to remove everything as that first cleanse, and then I go in with my cleanser afterwards. But if I'm applying makeup and let's say I'm trying to do that winged out look, which sometimes it's hard to do, I get days where I can get it right away and then there are days where it's a little bit more challenging, so I like to put a little bit of this on a Q-tip or even on a flat makeup brush, something that's really pointy that can give me that defined line, and I use this to clean it up so that that winged out look is nice and crisp and it's nice and clean as well. So I use this even when I'm applying my makeup just to clean up certain areas, but then of course this is excellent to remove waterproof mascara, your makeup, and even your sunscreen. So I really love this and I can't stop purchasing it."

"During the winter months, if you're wearing makeup, especially longwear makeup around the eyes, I do recommend starting with a micellar water like this one by Bioderma. I think it's around $20. It's not really irritating, it's very gentle. I just use this around my eye area if I'm wearing some eyeliner or a long-lasting mascara."

"I have raved about the Bioderma micellar water so many times it is hands down my favorite no rinse cleanser. Micellar waters have surfactants in them, these are the cleansing ingredients that you'll find in every cleansing product like shampoo body wash even dishwashing detergent, but there are a huge range of surfactants available. The innovation with these micellar waters was to find surfactants that clean well but they aren't irritating if you leave them on your skin. Some micellar waters don't do this well which is why a lot of people who have tried maybe one or two say you absolutely need to rinse micellar waters, but this one was actually designed for and tested on sensitive skin so this is really really gentle and works really well for most people. I found this so useful for evenings when I couldn't handle washing my face at a sink and dealing with all the water. It's also been really useful for washing my face when I'm trying to avoid a particular area like a few weeks ago I microbladed my brows and I had to kind of like paint around my brows. I went through another few bottles."

"Bioderma is also fantastic. I'd recommend the sensibio bio one over the sebium because you can't use the sebium around your eyes. "If you have on makeup like I do today, I usually have a second part of my routine where I use a micellar water to make sure everything is off, especially if I have on waterproof sunscreen. This by Bioderma is my favorite micellar water from the drugstore. But the drugstore has a lot of options. Just choose one that is fragrance free."
