Holiday gift guides are full of skincare boxes, but they rarely say what the experts think of what is inside. So we started with the experts: these are the products the dermatologists and skincare reviewers we follow name as gifts in their own words, checked against how all of the experts rated them. Here are the ones worth wrapping, the famous stocking filler that splits them, and how the gift sets fare.

Every gift here is one that an expert we follow has named as a gift, or a stocking stuffer, in her or his own words. Then we kept only the products the experts as a whole rate highly: each gift pick holds a Guru Score of 80% or more, which rolls up how every expert who reviewed it came down on it.
We also looked at the gift sets, the advent calendars and the famous stocking fillers that turn up in every holiday roundup, and say plainly where the experts split. Some panels are small, and where they are, we say so.
A gentle everyday product, the experts suggest: a good moisturizer, a micellar water or a sunscreen, rather than a strong active. The Style and Beauty Doctor puts it simply: moisturizers are easy to give, and you are not offending anyone with one.
Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream holds a Guru Score of 90% across 12 experts, and none of them said no. Dr. Daniel Sugai says it is what he wants in his own stocking, and suggests it for anyone in their 30s and up who wants a thicker, more nourishing cream.
Bioderma Sensibio H2O Micellar Water is the highest rated gift here, at 96% across 20 experts, and 19 of them said yes. The one no came from Dr Dray, who does not enjoy micellar waters, yet says this is the best she has tried and would make a good little stocking stuffer.
For someone who wears sunscreen every day, or should, Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun: Rice + Probiotics scores 87% across 31 experts, the biggest panel on this list, with 28 saying yes. CYoung says it works well under makeup and is affordable enough to be a good gift.
For a teenager, Dr. Jenny Liu names Tower 28 SOS Daily Rescue Facial Spray as a great gift for teens whose skin is starting to get irritated or acne prone, especially if they do not always shower straight after sport. It scores 82% across 22 experts, and none of them said no. If a teen's breakouts are more than the odd spot, a doctor or pharmacist is the better first stop.
For anyone who shaves, Dr. Daniel Sugai says Aveeno Shaving Gel has never irritated his skin or his patients', and that he gives it to all his family and friends. It scores 93%, and all 5 of the experts who reviewed it said yes, a small panel but a united one.
For dry hands, No BS Beauty keeps SkinFix Eczema Plus Hand Repair Cream on her nightstand and at her dad's house, and calls it a great gift. All 4 of its experts said yes (89%), so treat that as an early read.
And for the person who loves a ritual, Dr. Sam Ellis suggests Dieux Forever Eye Mask, reusable silicone patches you wear over your own eye cream, as a gift that lasts a long time. It scores 86% across 7 experts, with 6 saying yes.
Tatcha Dewy Skin Cream is the luxury cream the experts name as a gift. Beyond50Skin calls it perfect for someone who loves skincare but does not indulge in it, and The Style and Beauty Doctor calls Tatcha almost the perfect gift brand, for its packaging and the way the products feel. It holds a Guru Score of 81% across 21 experts, with 15 saying yes.
It is not unanimous, though. Of the 5 who said no, Hyram and Kelly Driscoll point to the fragrance, Dr. Vanita Rattan warns that its essential oils can irritate and may leave dark marks on skin prone to them, and Kelly Driscoll and April Basi say the same ingredients turn up in plainer creams. So it suits someone who loves a scented, spa-like cream, and is a riskier pick for sensitive skin. If fragrance has caused someone a reaction before, a pharmacist or dermatologist can suggest a fragrance-free cream instead. It is a gamble. Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask is a familiar stocking filler, and Dr. Sam Ellis calls it a very giftable item that leaves lips softer and smoother. But it holds a Guru Score of 72% across 22 experts: 11 said yes, 7 said no and 4 were mixed.
The no side is unusually firm. Dr Dray has tried it again and again and says it leaves her lips drier and more irritated, and she does not care for the strong scent. Hyram says his lips feel just as dry an hour later, and Dr. Vanita Rattan says it sits on the lips rather than pulling hydration in. If the person on your list already loves it, it is a safe repeat. If not, a moisturizer above is the surer bet.
It depends on the set, going by the experts we follow, and the sets they review are few. The one advent calendar in our index with expert verdicts on the box as a whole, Sephora Collection Beauty Insider Advent Calendar, scores 55%, and both experts who reviewed it said no. Robert Welsh calls the contents cheap and dislikes how the calendar splits one item across two days. AliceintheRabbitHole found makeup wipes, nail polish and an eye cream applicator inside and was unimpressed.
Kits are mixed too. Cassandra Bankson loves NuFACE but tells people to skip the NuFACE Trinity+ Advanced Facial Toning Kit and buy the device on its own; the other 2 experts who reviewed the kit said yes. Some sets do well: the COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence & All-in-One Cream Set holds a Guru Score of 84% with all 4 of its experts saying yes, and The Ordinary Power of Peptide Set scores 84% with all 3 saying yes. So it may be worth checking the verdicts on the set itself before you wrap it.
Pick something gentle that suits most skin, from a product the experts rate highly. Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream (90%) and Bioderma Sensibio H2O Micellar Water (96%) are the easiest wins here, Tower 28 SOS is Dr. Jenny Liu's pick for a teen, and Tatcha Dewy Skin Cream is the treat for someone who loves fragrance. It may be wise to leave strong actives such as retinol for someone you know already uses one, and check the expert verdicts on a product's page before you wrap it.
