Hyram has looked at more than 30 masks and peels, and just under half made the cut, here's what that record tells you.

Hyram has put more than 30 masks and peels through their paces, and his approval rate sits at 45%. That means roughly as many products landed a skip or a mixed take as got his stamp of approval. It is a selective record, and it is worth knowing what separates the wins from the rest.

What does Hyram recommend in masks & peels?

When Hyram approves a mask or peel, it tends to do one of two things really well: it exfoliates without wrecking the skin's barrier, or it calms redness and sensitivity fast. He named Paula's Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant a category winner because it clears pores thoroughly. He does add that a couple of times a week is plenty, since more than that can dry skin out. He gave the same top billing to Peter Thomas Roth Cucumber Gel Mask, saying nothing he has tried comes close to how quickly it brings down redness and sensitivity. He also loves Krave Beauty Kale-Lalu-Yaha AHA/BHA Exfoliant for fighting breakouts overnight without leaving skin irritated by morning. And he rates PSA Skin Follow the Light Multi-Acids and Vitamin C Peel as a strong pick for anyone who wants real exfoliating results but still has sensitive skin, though he suggests saving it for once every two weeks or once a month.

In his words

"The Paula's Choice 25% AHA plus 2% BHA Exfoliant Peel, I've used this one, it has the most satisfying purple iridescent finish, and it works really well. I find it's like a nice luxury version of The Ordinary's peel mask. I personally love the results, I love the ingredients, I think it's great. [...] This is a good product, definitely more luxury, but I am a fan of the ingredients and the experience."
"The ability it has to just remove all of the excess redness from my face and reduce the stinging and the irritation, it really is one of those formulas that just absolutely blows me away. [...] I have not yet found another product that even compares to this formula for immediately being able to reduce my sensitivity and redness and calm down my skin as quickly as it does. It's expensive at $55, [...] but it lasts for such a long time."
"If you are someone who's wanting a really strong salicylic acid formula to use a few times a week, the Paula's Choice 2% BHA liquid exfoliant is a tried and true classic that's so good at really going deep in your pores and getting all the gunk out. There's a reason why it's so popular. It works really well for clearing out the pores, albeit that you should only use it a couple times per week because it can really dry out the skin, but still very effective."
"Krave Beauty's Kale-Lalu-Yaha always does an amazing job of really deeply exfoliating but not leading to excessive sensitivity. Whenever I find that I'm experiencing breakouts, pimples, and they're being a little persistent and won't go away, I just slap this stuff on overnight, and when I wake up in the morning, not only do I notice that my breakouts have significantly gone down, but my face is so much more glowy. It's not irritated, it's not sensitive."
"Their Mugwort Face Mask is really good for calming down redness, sensitivity, and irritation. [...] While it's not my favorite product from the line, it's definitely really good."
"I absolutely love [...] this one. If you're wanting a power exfoliating experience that still prioritizes skin sensitivity, I feel like this one is an awesome one to use. It features glycolic acid, lactic acid, salicylic acid, and has vitamin C as well as centella asiatica to help reduce any redness or sensitivity. It's definitely power-packed and going to give you the results that you want, but still a peel that I would only recommend you using like once every two weeks or once a month."

How many masks and peels has Hyram reviewed?

Hyram has reviewed 33 masks and peels, for an approval rate of 45%. 15 approved, 6 mixed, and 12 skipped.

What has Hyram skipped in masks & peels?

Hyram's skips tend to come down to two things: physical scrubs and concentrations he considers recklessly high. He has been vocal about St. Ives Fresh Skin Apricot Scrub, saying he is simply waiting for the brand to move past that kind of product. On the other end, he skipped COSRX AHA/BHA/PHA/LHA 35 Peel because 35% is, in his view, just too much. He points out that a higher percentage is not a badge of strength, and that gentle, consistent use over time tends to deliver better results. He also gave a flat no to Laneige Water Sleeping Mask. A sleeping mask should leave skin hydrated and glowy by morning, he says, and this one left his skin feeling dry and dehydrated instead.

What should you take from Hyram's picks?

Hyram's record on this category rewards patience and proportion. He rates products that exfoliate or calm skin in a measured way, and he consistently flags anything that pushes concentration or abrasion past the point where skin can recover well. If you are shopping this category with his takes as your guide, looking for products he describes as effective but not aggressive is a solid place to start.
