What the gurus are saying

Gurus consistently praise the mask's lightweight texture and hydrating formula, with many noting its flexibility as a nightly moisturizer or travel essential. However, opinion splits on efficacy: some find it genuinely hydrating, while others report it leaves skin dehydrated by morning. A recurring concern is the high fragrance and essential oil content, which can trigger sensitivity in left-on overnight use. The verdict overall is that it delivers on hydration for many, though it may not be the most innovative option available anymore.

"That Laneige one is super lightweight."

"This is the OG sleeping mask and probably what Laneige is really known for. It's a lightweight gel mask that you'll apply in place of your moisturizer or on top of your moisturizer, but it's meant to be left on overnight to do its work as you sleep so you don't wash it off. You can use it as needed like a few times a week or nightly as your nighttime moisturizer if you choose. It's got this hydrolyzed mineral water and beta glucan that is really unique in maximizing skin hydration absorption, helping to soothe and moisturize your skin as you sleep. You can use it so many different ways. You can use it as needed for dullness or hydration, or when you're traveling, putting this on in flight can really help to reduce that dehydration that your skin gets while you're flying."

"It's a sleeping mask it can be used in place of your moisturizer at night time or on top of your moisturizer at night time, but you could even use it as a moisturizer during the daytime so it's very flexible. It really is meant to infuse your skin with a lot of hydration as you're sleeping and help to restore your skin through that restful process. I do think that it delivers on the hydration. It may not be the most hydrating out there anymore, it may not be the most innovative product out there anymore, however I don't see a lot of sleeping mask products available at Sephora so I think in this market it definitely has a renewed interest and renewed innovation. I used it many years ago and I liked it then, it kind of fell out of my routine, it didn't grow along with me, but I do think it is a nice product."

"The Water Sleeping Mask is mainly made of silicon, glycerin, and a few extracts. Glycerin is an amazing ingredient for skincare that helps with the skin barrier and makes things feel nice. However, fragrance is quite high up in the formulation, and it also has essential oils such as linoleic acid oil, which can sensitize the skin if left on. Since this is a leave-on product that you're using overnight in a thick layer, if you have skin sensitivity, this could be the reason why you're experiencing sensitivity. You might want to look for something that's fragrance-free and allergen-free instead."

"No pass. I don't like that product. I don't understand why it has such a cult following because if you're going to make a sleeping mask you want it to be like super rich and moisturizing so that you can wake up with glowy skin. But every time I've used that product my skin is so dehydrated and dry in the morning, which is an impressive feat considering that normally my skin is super oily and I'm going to wake up with skin grease anyway. So the fact that it can dry out my skin overnight is impressive in a bad way."

"Laneige also gets a plug, also wonderful. They don't really call it a gel cream, they call it oddly a sleeping mask, which I get, have no idea what that means, but I can use a moisturizer and it's fantastic."
