Doctor Anne has tested more than ten sunscreens, and she brings the same three priorities to every one: comfortable wear, strong UVA protection, and a finish she can live with. She approves of most, but not all, and when she skips a product she says exactly why.
What does Doctor Anne recommend in sunscreen?
What she keeps coming back to are sunscreens that feel like almost nothing on the skin. She loves the La Roche-Posay Anthelios UVMune 400 Invisible Fluid SPF 50+ for outdoor days, calling it the most comfortable water-resistant option she has found. She singles out its UVA protection as the main reason she reaches for it, since she watches carefully for hyperpigmentation. For quick reapplication through the day, she relies on the Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence SPF 50+ PA++++. It layers so lightly over skincare and sweat that she says she can actually face putting it on again. On quieter, mostly-indoor days she turns to something like the Geek & Gorgeous 101 Zero Feel SPF 50 Day Cream, which she describes as disappearing into the skin entirely. She also praised the TOCOBO Bio Watery Sun Cream SPF 50+ PA++++ for ticking all her boxes: modern filters, a finish that is not too dewy, and a formula she thinks may suit people who normally react to organic sunscreens.
In her words
"On days when I know I will be outdoors for a good portion of the day, I will start with a layer of the La Roche-Posay UVMune 400 SPF 50+ Invisible Fluid, which is the most comfortable water resistant option I have found and offers amazing UVA protection, great for me as I am worried about hyperpigmentation."
"I have the Biore UV Aqua Rich SPF 50 plus, [...] which is the one that I use year round for touchups. It is so lightweight that I don't feel the need to immediately run off and wash my face and do everything again because I know reapplication is incredibly important, but having skin care plus sunscreen plus sweat plus another layer of sunscreen on your face is just not my favorite feeling. And with that, that works perfectly fine."
"For days when I'm just commuting by bike and spending the day indoors, I reach for more lightweight sunscreens that aren't water resistant but feel like nothing. One of the two I have on rotation is the Geek and Gorgeous Zero Feel SPF 50 plus. You can feel it when you apply it, but then it just disappears, you don't feel anything, and it has a very natural finish."
"On top of that there is Niacinamide, Glycerin and Sodium Hyaluronate for hydration, Allantoin for soothing and a bunch of different plant extracts. [...] It is one of the sunscreens that tick all of my boxes - finish not too dewy, modern filters, comfortable to wear, so I can see myself reaching for it a lot once it gets colder again. Due to the choice of sunscreen filters I can see it working on skins that are usually sensitive to organic sunscreens."
"The isntree Hyaluronic Acid Watery Sun Gel SPF 50, I finished twice, [...] and it's one of [...] the ones I would repurchase."
"And then the Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun Rice + Probiotics SPF 50+. That is a little more dewy, a little more hydrating, which is why I prefer it when it gets colder outside."

What has Doctor Anne skipped in sunscreen?
Where Doctor Anne skips a sunscreen, white cast and breakdown are the most common reasons. She found the Skin1004 Tone Brightening Tone-Up Sunscreen SPF 50+ gave her an obvious white cast and settled into her pores. She says that surprised her, because she had expected to like it. The Skin1004 Air Fit Suncream Plus SPF 50+ got a similar verdict. She says its purely inorganic filter formula was never really for her, and the white cast was the sticking point. The IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream SPF 50+ she skipped for different reasons. The texture felt heavy, and the coverage started to look patchy within a few hours. None of that is a reason to write any of these off entirely, since finish and texture are personal. But it is useful to know what she looked for and where each one fell short for her.
"It also contains Centella Asiatica Extract with Madecassoside, Niacinamide and Tranexamic Acid for brightening, and Glycerin for hydration. I actually expected to like this one best since it's a hybrid rather than a pure inorganic sunscreen and contains Tranexamic Acid, but I just can't bring myself to wear it. The hybrid Tone Brightening Tone Up Sunscreen is the worst, it has an awful white cast and settles into my pores, even though the texture is nice."
"It did not sting my eyes and the finish is dewy but not too glowy. The filters are Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide paired with Aluminium Hydroxide as a protective coating, which explains the higher SPF and the increased white cast compared to the Light version. It also contains Centella Asiatica Extract and its active components, Niacinamide, and several plant oils including Bergamot Fruit Oil. I am personally not a huge fan, as I did expect given it is a formula with only inorganic filters."
"The IT Cosmetics CC Cream just didn't work for me. It does deliver the full coverage it promises, but the texture felt heavy, almost like a thick moisturizer mixed with concealer, and it has a citrussy scent that reminded her of air fresheners. Within the first two hours it started breaking down around her nose and mouth, and by hour four it looked like she'd been wearing the foundation for three days straight, patchy and crusty."
What should you take from Doctor Anne's picks?
Doctor Anne's record on sunscreens gives anyone a practical framework rather than a vague 'best of' list. She has named a handful of winners, among them La Roche-Posay Anthelios UVMune 400 Invisible Fluid SPF 50+, Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence SPF 50+ PA++++ and iNNBEAUTY PROJECT Mineral Sunlow Broadspectrum SPF 43 PA+++, each suited to a different kind of day. Her approval rate of 58% signals she is not easy to please, and the products she skips tell you as much as the ones she rates.
