Dr. Vanita Rattan's honest takes on masks and peels

She approved most of what she tested, but flagged a handful of popular products as genuinely risky.

Dr. Vanita Rattan has reviewed more than 10 masks and peels, and she approved a little over half of them, landing at an approval rate of 57%. She named no category winner here, which is worth noting. Her bar is clearly high, and several well-known products did not make the cut.

What does Dr. Vanita Rattan recommend in masks & peels?

When she approved a product, the reasons were usually the same. She looks for gentle exfoliants that lift dead skin without stripping the barrier. She praised Paula's Choice 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant warmly, saying she would buy it herself for oily skin. She was just as positive about Paula's Choice Skin Perfecting 6% Mandelic Acid + 2% Lactic Acid Liquid Exfoliant, pointing out that mandelic and lactic acid are gentle enough for skin of color. She also praised COSRX BHA Blackhead Power Liquid 4% for its anti-inflammatory first ingredient and good moisturizers. Fragrance-free formulas came up again and again as a must for her. She approved Beauty of Joseon Centella Asiatica Calming Mask, Numbuzin No.6 Deep Sleep Mask, and MIXSOON Bifida Mask Pack, and each time she noted they are free of fragrance and essential oils.

In her words

"I absolutely love this product and I would buy this product if this was my main concern which is oily skin"
"I also like Paula's Choice 6% mandelic plus 2% lactic, so that's 8% but of gentle AHAs. They're great for skin of color and the trick is to remove enough dead skin cells to see young, juicy, glowing skin. You want to make sure you're getting hydration into the top layer, so you want humectant in the actual chemical exfoliator, and ideally want gentle tyrosine inhibitors that can go deep into the skin and can help to calm down the melanocytes, the cells producing the pigment melanin."
"I actually really like this product. The first ingredient is Salix Alba bark water, which is a great anti-inflammatory. It has great moisturizers in it too, so it's got butylene glycol, panthenol, and arginine. Butylene glycol is quite good because it's a solvent but it also helps the other ingredients penetrate deeper into the skin. [...] It has 4% salicylate betaine."
"Make sure you do your skincare 2 hours before bed to make sure this doesn't come off on your sheets. So in here we've got a bunch of humectants plus niacinamide and it's fragrance-free. I love it. This is a Navesafe product. Highly recommend it. If you're going through menopause, your skin is feeling really tight and dry, put this on. If you've got a damaged skin barrier after your moisturizer, put this on. I really like this. Well done. 10 out of 10 on this product."
"It's meant to be for calming any skin troubles and also contains three different types of hyaluronic acid for intensive moisturization. This is a safe product, no alcohol, no fragrance, and no essential oils. It's got niacinamide in it which I love, ginseng which I love, and green tea extract which I also love. I actually really love this for dry, mature, or sensitive skin, but also kids could use this product too. I would give this a nice 7.5 out of 10."
"So this product is paraben safe, no diol alcohol, no fragrance, no essential oils, which is really important. A lot of masks out there have a lot of oil and fragrance in them, especially if they've got fruits on the mask. This is Lactobacillus ferment and you're basically occluding with it, which means that you've got this beautiful conditioner on the skin and now you're occluding which prevents water from evaporating from the skin. You're creating a healing environment for the skin."

How many masks and peels has Dr. Vanita Rattan reviewed?

Dr. Vanita Rattan has reviewed 14 masks and peels, for an approval rate of 57%. 8 approved, 1 mixed, and 5 skipped.

What has Dr. Vanita Rattan skipped in masks & peels?

She was firm about what she skipped, and her reasons were consistent. High acid concentrations were a real concern. She called The Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution a disaster for certain skin types, warning it can cause burns and long-lasting hyperpigmentation. She gave the same warning about Minimalist 10% AHA + 2% BHA Face Exfoliating Serum, saying its glycolic and lactic acid load is actually worse. Denatured alcohol was the other dealbreaker. She gave Beauty of Joseon Apricot Blossom Peeling Gel zero out of ten, pointing to denatured alcohol as its fourth ingredient and added fragrance as an absolute problem. She also skipped Anua Heartleaf LHA Peeling Gel, saying that combining physical exfoliation with a peeling gel on already-broken acne-prone skin was a mistake that should never have been made.

What should you take from Dr. Vanita Rattan's picks?

Dr. Rattan's record on masks and peels comes down to two questions: how strong is the acid, and is there fragrance or denatured alcohol in the formula? Products that pass both tests tend to win her approval. Those that fail either one are likely to get a hard skip, no matter how popular they are on social media.
