Dr. Vanita Rattan's Eye Care Picks: What She Rates and What She Skips

She approves products that pair real actives with skin-safe formulas, and she skips anything that looks good on paper but falls short in packaging, irritants, or actual potency.

Dr. Vanita Rattan has looked at more than 10 eye care products, and her approval rate of 22% tells you she sets a high bar. Most products got a mixed take or were skipped outright. The ones she does approve tend to share a few clear traits, and the ones she skips have equally clear reasons.

What does Dr. Vanita Rattan recommend in eye care?

When she approves an eye product, it usually has an active that genuinely does something. She praised Medik8 Eye Cream for using retinal, which she says works ten times faster than retinol and is well suited to skin of colour. She also rated Versed Smooth Landing Advanced Retinoid Eye Balm for leading with fats that lock in moisture and for having no fragrance, denatured alcohol, or essential oils. MZ Skin Hydra-Lift Gold Eye Mask earned her approval for a formula built around glycerin, niacinamide, and calming panthenol, all fragrance free. Packaging matters to her too. She flags products where actives can break down before you even finish the jar.

In her words

"It's got fats first, which [...] means it's going to hold water and prevent transepidermal water loss. It's got vitamin A, but it's not an airless pump, which means you don't really know how effective the vitamin A is going to be. However, it is Na Safed, meaning no denat alcohol, no fragrance, no essential oils. And I do like it, and it's only twelve pounds, so this is one that actually is decent."
"The second ingredient here is glycerin, we have niacinamide, panthenol which is anti-inflammatory, centella asiatica which is also quite soothing on the skin. It has hydrolyzed collagen, but don't forget the collagen in here acts as a humectant rather than to actually stimulate collagen. And it's fragrance free, so I really like it."
"Retinal does work 10 times better than retinol, 10 times faster. I love retinal for skin of color. It's going to have a similar efficacy to 0.3% retinol, which is the maximum we can use in terms of retinol in the EU. This is a niacinamide safe product. It's got no drying alcohol, no fragrance, no essential oils. It's not irritating. I would give this a nice seven out of 10. It's good for beginners and for intermediates. Well done Medik8, you've done very well here."
"Some of the products I love are The Ordinary Caffeine at 5%. Caffeine is one of those mitochondrial activators that helps address hair thinning by increasing ATP and supporting the growth phase of hair follicles, leading to stronger hair strands and reducing shedding."

How many eye care products has Dr. Vanita Rattan reviewed?

Dr. Vanita Rattan has reviewed 18 eye care products, for an approval rate of 22%. 4 approved, 6 mixed, and 8 skipped.

What has Dr. Vanita Rattan skipped in eye care?

Her skips each come down to a different problem, and that mix is worth knowing. Tatcha Brightening Eye Cream lost points for containing fragrance, linalool, and limonene near the eye. She says those can cause contact dermatitis and long-term pigmentation on thin orbital skin of colour. Olay Retinol 24 Eye Cream had retinol she actually liked, but jar packaging means you cannot trust how much of it survives to do any good. Haruharu Wonder Black Rice Bakuchiol Eye Cream she described as no better than a basic moisturiser, saying bakuchiol and niacinamide alone will not address what eye creams are meant to treat. And BYOMA De-puff and Brighten Eye Gel, she said, simply does not have enough vitamin C to treat dark circles in skin of colour, so it would not deliver what it promises.

What should you take from Dr. Vanita Rattan's picks?

Dr. Vanita Rattan's record on eye care is a useful reality check. She is not against eye creams, but she wants real actives in stable packaging, with no irritants near skin that is already thin and sensitive. With an approval rate of 22%, she named no outright category winner here, which says as much as the individual takes do.
