    What the gurus are saying

This serum earns consistent praise for delivering visible brightening and smoother texture within a couple of weeks, thanks to its blend of stabilized retinol, vitamin C, glycolic and mandelic acids, and vitamin E working together in one formula. What sets it apart is how gentle it stays despite the potent actives; gurus note it's creamy and hydrating without heaviness, making it safe to use twice daily and potentially replace multiple serums in your routine. The straightforward formula and elegant texture make it easy to layer under moisturizer for a naturally radiant complexion.

"This is going to be your main treatment. It's going to target all skin concerns like texture, brightness, softening, and preventing fine lines and wrinkles. It's literally going to do it all because of what is in the ingredient list. This can be used every day, twice a day. At first I was using this twice a day, but then I went to once a day and I loved it. This really does work to brighten the skin, improve texture and tone. And if you have that uneven skin tone because of, let's say, post acne marks or you just have a little bit of discoloration, I feel like this is a product that can really help to give you more of that even complexion in time, of course with consistent use. So this has a stabilized retinol ester. This also has a stabilized vitamin C as well as vitamin E antioxidants and multi-hydroxy acids. There are several exfoliating acids in here like glycolic, mandelic acid, and there are several others to help with that smoother, softer look and feel to the skin, to help brighten the skin, and of course to help eliminate dryness, flakiness. It really gives this nice rejuvenated look over time the more consistent you use it. I feel like within a couple of weeks I really noticed that my skin started to look a little bit more clear. It looked a little bit more brighter. It started to look more refreshed after a couple weeks of using it twice a day. I just feel like this could replace a lot of the serums that you have in your skincare routine right now."

"This is the one to use because it really is formulated in a way where it has all the common ingredients that we talk about and recommend in one bottle but in a way that is gentle but yet effective and not irritating. It's got your antioxidants, stabilized vitamin C, stabilized retinol, vitamin E, hyaluronic acid as well as your alpha hydroxy acids. It's creamy and hydrating but not heavy or greasy, very elegant, and [...] super gentle so that you should actually be using it twice a day. It really helps to address most of the skin concerns that we encounter day-to-day with one product. If you're looking for something to really simplify your routine and condense those steps into one, this would be the one to use."

"U Beauty's Resurfacing Compound is $148. They combine sodium ascorbyl phosphate with glycolic and mandelic acid. Personally I do not love exfoliating with glycolic acid in the morning because it can make you more sun sensitive, so I would use this at night in your routine. It also has hyaluronic acid. It is a very watery serum, but it's protected from the sun and it comes in a pump."

    What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

    Retinoids

Retinoids are among the best studied ingredients in dermatology, with solid evidence for acne and for the fine lines and rough texture that come from sun exposure. Dryness and flaking in the first few weeks are common and usually settle.

    Vitamin C

Topical vitamin C is an antioxidant with reasonable evidence for dullness and uneven tone. It breaks down in light and air, so how a product is formulated and packaged matters as much as the percentage on the front.

    Source: DermNet

    Alpha hydroxy acids

Alpha hydroxy acids loosen the bonds holding dead cells at the surface. The evidence supports smoother texture and more even tone over time, and they can leave skin more sensitive to sun.
