What the gurus are saying

This retinol earns consistent praise for delivering visible results on fine lines and firmness while remaining gentler than many over-the-counter options, making it a solid choice for those already familiar with retinoids. The formula includes peptides and vitamin C that help support the skin barrier during use. The main split is on value: most gurus love the results, though some feel the price has climbed too high relative to what you get, and one finds the texture thinner than ideal for retinol's irritation risk. Start with the sandwich method (moisturiser, retinol, moisturiser) if your skin is sensitive, and ease in at twice weekly.

"One of the first retinoids I used was the retinol from Paula's Choice, and it contained a lot of hydrating ingredients, so I didn't have a ton of the retinization that can happen when you start using retinol, like flakiness, redness, itchiness, scratchiness, and dryness."

"I love the Paula's Choice 1% but those are over-the-counter retinols okay, um and so they are the weakest because it takes them two steps to get over to the prescription strength so our over-the-counter retinols are the most easily tolerated on our skin because there are less irritation."

"This is my top retinol that you can find at home. My number one choice for an over-the-counter retinol if you guys are just now beginning or even if you want to step your retinol down a little bit, if you've got a function coming up and don't want to be peely or red or anything like that, this is it. Even if you just started with something like this and stayed here, you're still increasing cell turnover, you're still diminishing fine lines and wrinkles, you're still treating acne, you're still helping melasma, you're still changing the function of your skin. This also has great supporting ingredients such as peptides and oat and willow bark that help to soothe the skin as it's treating. This is my number one in terms of an over-the-counter retinol that's going to be a little bit less irritating. This is still a great product and you still might get irritated from this, but this is a great starter retinol."

"This one is $50 with the discount that they're running right now, so can range up to $62. This contains 1% retinol which is a super high concentration of retinol over the counter. It also has THD ascorbate vitamin C which is one of the better forms of vitamin C. It also has allantoin which is calming and soothing, licorice root, and several forms of different peptides that help to support the skin barrier. Just a good combination, but it's that high concentration of retinol that's going to be really effective for anti-aging in general and just maintaining a healthy skin barrier. I've used this one for a long period of time and had a lot of good success with it personally, so absolutely love this one."

BEST RETINOL FOR YOU | Doctorly Favorites
"Paula's Choice gets the first nod for best overall retinol. Paula's Choice is one percent retinol, and what makes this one so special is just the wealth of complementing ingredients. Of course it uses a solid concentration of retinol at one percent but it also has a lot of good supporting ingredients: peptides, THD ascorbate which is a form of vitamin C, oat which is calming and soothing, willow bark which is actually where salicylic acid came from in the first place, and so it has a lot of complementing and supporting ingredients that make it just overall a great retinol for somebody who doesn't have one of these specific issues."

"This is a product that I've always raved about because not only does it have the retinol, it also has vitamin C and peptides, so it's going to help firm, address fine lines and wrinkles, it's going to brighten, it's going to improve texture, and it's great for those that have acne-prone skin as well. It really does it all. And all you need is a pea-sized amount to apply to your face and then another pea-sized amount to cover your neck area. I use this on my neck and my chest, and it's a product that treats the skin really well with no irritation."

IF I COULD ONLY PICK 1 PRODUCT FROM MY FAVORITE SKINCARE BRANDS | THIS WAS REALLY HARD!
"The one product that I am literally the most consistent with is the 1% retinol treatment. There are many things that I use on my neck to treat the skin on my neck and I can't use Tretinoin on my neck, there's a lot of actives that I can't use on my neck because it's a very sensitive area for me personally. This product is really nice because it has that 1% retinol so of course this is going to soften fine lines, it's going to firm up the skin. This can be used on your face of course and I have used this many times on my face but I strictly keep this for my neck, I bring it down my chest and I will occasionally use it on the tops of my hands before I go to bed. This also has peptides which of course firm the skin."

"I like the Paula's Choice 1% Retinol Treatment. I actually use that on my neck and my chest in my nighttime skincare routine, but sometimes I will use it and bring it onto the tops of my hands. Using a retinol can really help to improve texture and tone, crepiness, it can help to produce new collagen as well, and it really makes the biggest difference when you are consistent with a retinol product on the hands. It can really help with wrinkles as well. I've been really consistent with that, and when I'm using retinol I'm using this in my nighttime routine before I go to bed."

IF I COULD ONLY PICK 1 PRODUCT FROM MY FAVORITE SKINCARE BRANDS | FYI...THIS WAS REALLY HARD!
"The one percent retinol treatment is really one of my favorites from this brand. I use this on my neck and chest because I don't use tretinoin in this area, my neck is just so sensitive to tretinoin. I use it sometimes on the backs of my hands. This formula is exceptional, it's very moisturizing, it does help to soften fine lines and it does give a brighter look to the skin as well. It also contains vitamin C and peptides and my skin tolerates so well to this. If you don't use tretinoin but you're looking for a retinol for your face, this can be used for the face as well and it's exceptional. I have used this on my face many times and I've never had irritation from this either. My skin really tolerates well to this."
THE BEST SKINCARE TIPS 2024 | DO'S & DON'TS FOR BETTER SKIN! SINCERELY MISS ASH
"If you're looking for something a little bit stronger, the Paula's Choice 1% Retinol Treatment is a great option. I honestly feel like this is really gentle as well. I use this on my neck all the time and my neck can be very sensitive to retinol and just active ingredients in general. In my opinion this is gentle, but for someone else it might be too much. This one also has vitamin C and peptides in the formulation and I do feel like it's quite moisturizing as well. Even if you have to start with the sandwich method first then do that, so that means you're going to put a layer of moisturizer first then your retinol then another layer of moisturizer. This sandwich technique is a great technique to do when you're first starting retinol. This is going to give you that barrier and it's just going to provide your skin with more moisture when you're using that retinol and it works really well. Do that maybe once or twice a week and then gradually increase your usage from there. This really is a great product to address so many skin concerns like discoloration, fine lines and wrinkles, acne and so much more."

"The one I've used for years is the one percent Paula's Choice and I love this because it has peptides and it has vitamin C. It's basically beautifully formulated, it's really lovely, and this is the one that most people would need probably to build up to. I absolutely love it. I've had zero irritation in all the time I've ever used this. It's unfragranced, it's the smell of retinol which I really love, and I've had zero problems with it."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Retinoids

Retinoids are among the best studied ingredients in dermatology, with solid evidence for acne and for the fine lines and rough texture that come from sun exposure. Dryness and flaking in the first few weeks are common and usually settle.

Source: DermNet

Vitamin C

Topical vitamin C is an antioxidant with reasonable evidence for dullness and uneven tone. It breaks down in light and air, so how a product is formulated and packaged matters as much as the percentage on the front.

Source: DermNet

Ceramides

Ceramides are part of the skin's own barrier, and moisturisers built around them have evidence for holding water in and settling the tightness and flaking that come with a damaged barrier.
