What the gurus are saying

This gentle retinol earns consistent praise for being affordable and tolerable even for sensitive skin, combining retinol with peptides and niacinamide to boost collagen and calm redness without harsh irritation. One expert notes the vitamin C derivative present is stabilized but unlikely to penetrate deeply enough for collagen-building benefits, though the peptides and niacinamide do offer hydration and barrier support. Those with dry skin may want to layer a moisturizer on top, but many find it gentle enough to use alone.

"I've talked about this a lot on the channel and what I like about it is that it's affordable, Costco have a great deal, a two for one deal at times. It has niacinamide in addition to its retinol complex, which is retinyl and retinol, so you have those two nice retinols put together. It's very tolerable, very gentle if you have sensitive skin. We love retinol because it's a vitamin A derivative that will help increase collagen production, but this also has peptides in it to help boost collagen production as well, so you have a peptide complex. Niacinamide is a vitamin B3 analog that will brighten the skin, help regulate sebum production, and it also helps with repairing the skin barrier. So instead of having a niacinamide serum that's 10%, which is way too high, I like to have niacinamide mixed into my skincare products. This is something you'd use at bedtime, just a pea-sized amount. If you have dry skin, definitely moisturize over the retinol."

Olay Super vs Retinol 24 Max: Which Serum Wins?
"This one is fragrance-free, great for those with sensitive skin. My patients love it. What I love about this is that it also has niacinamide and peptides. I love niacinamide because it helps regulate sebum production. It can be soothing and calming and helps repair the skin barrier. It also has brightening effects as well. They said there's noticeable fine line reduction in 28 days, which seems like pretty fast. I'd say for retinoids, I always say go for 4 to 6 months to see improvement in your wrinkles. But they also said 24-hour hydration as well."

"This is a great moisturizer with retinol to help tackle the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and skin aging. Not just for perimenopausal, menopausal skin, but just in general, especially if you are a beginner because it's got a nice gentle formula, but still works well. It's nourishing, but not heavy. I would say it's more suitable for maybe combination slightly oily skin. For me who have more dry skin, especially in the winter time, if I put this on, I actually will put on a thicker moisturizer. Otherwise, I wake up feeling a little bit more dry and tight. But overall, it's a really gentle formula. So great for those who are like permenopause, menopause, looking for a gentle retinol that maybe you can even layer on top of those serums that I mentioned or just use alone. But if you feel that your skin feels a little more dry, then by all means put on a thicker moisturizer afterwards and totally okay to do that as long as it doesn't have like additional actives like retinols so that way you're not doubling up on the actives. It's a wonderful product I recommend for anyone looking for a gentle retinol to help tackle some mild fine lines, wrinkles, and skin aging."

"I'm recommending the Olay Retinol 24 with peptides as a great nighttime moisturizer. It retails for about $29.99 at Target. This contains a retinol complex of pure retinol and a retinol ester along with niacinamide that really works well with retinol to reduce irritation that retinol may bring on but also improve skin barrier health and offer some anti-aging benefits at the same time. It also contains an amino peptide complex, specifically Matrixyl or Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4, which is one of the most studied peptides that help support collagen and elastin. All around just a great trio of ingredients that's going to target your anti-aging concerns, improve fine lines, wrinkles, and even skin texture and skin tone while at the same time also nourishing your skin and moisturizing your skin. Texture-wise this is a fast-absorbing, minimally greasy finish, so really great for those that have more combination or oily skin. If you have really dry skin you can certainly use this and put on a heavy moisturizing lotion on top of that."

"Olay retinol 24 plus peptides, listen I know it's not Olay is not like your grandmother's Olay they've got great products. Olay retinol 24 it's an amazing product for firsttime retinoid users and it's moisturizing so that you don't have to put moisturizer over the top of it."

"You can get the two jars for 33.99. This is actually a good product and this is a good value here, and they have the fragrance free one. The peptide may help with moisture retention, hydration, and improves skin firmness, which is probably going to lead to a more gratifying instant result, whereas the retinol takes some time with ongoing use, though the retinol can help improve fine lines and skin firmness."

"You get the retinol 24 plus peptide fragrance free which is a good retinol, and it also has the peptides in there which are probably hydrating and moisturizing. It's got niacinamide which is good for redness hyperpigmentation and the moisture barrier. It also has 3O ethyl ascorbic, that's a stable form of vitamin C. It may help cut down on oxidative stress if you've got oily skin, but it's not actually going to get into your skin and convert to ascorbic acid and help with collagen synthesis likely. Panthenol is very moisturizing, lactic acid smooths and exfoliates as well as hydrates. I've tried the retinol 24 and it's good."

"Olay's Retinol and Peptide 24 has retinol in it, which can be converted to retinoic acid in the skin, and that can ultimately improve collagen. It can also help improve the skin's ability to retain moisture. It has retinyl propionate, a retinol ester which can help stabilize the retinol and is an antioxidant, palmitoyl pentapeptide, niacinamide which is anti-inflammatory, and sodium hyaluronate as a humectant. At 46.49 for the two pack it's not too bad. Definitely go with the Olay one if you're coming to Costco for a retinol."

"This one has water, dimethicone, glycerin, this one has tapioca starch, good job, dimethicone cross polymer, retinol, retinol propionate, niacinamide, Palmetto pentapeptide four. Where do we just see these exact same ingredients? Oh, that's right, in the other two products. This is basically a slightly tweaked version of the exact same thing. Literally, if she likes the texture of this, just apply it all over the face and right here in the under eyes. Or if she likes the serum better because it's more lightweight, ditch the moisturizer, ditch the eye cream, and just put the serum all over. This is point in case I rest my case that this moisturizer is basically the same thing as their eye cream that they were trying to sell you for much more money."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Retinoids

Retinoids are among the best studied ingredients in dermatology, with solid evidence for acne and for the fine lines and rough texture that come from sun exposure. Dryness and flaking in the first few weeks are common and usually settle.

Source: DermNet

Niacinamide

Niacinamide has evidence behind it for redness, uneven tone and supporting the skin barrier, and it is usually well tolerated even by skin that reacts to most things.

Sunscreen filters

Sun protection is the best evidenced way to slow visible ageing, and the filters are what does the work. Mineral and chemical filters both protect when a product is applied thickly enough and often enough, which is where most people fall short rather than on the choice of filter.
