What they liked

  • Mid-strength retinol gentle enough for retinol beginners
  • PDRN and peptides help buffer retinol irritation
  • Overnight serum that firms without excessive sensitising

What they flagged

  • Too mild a retinol dose for established users
  • Requires sun protection the next day

What the gurus are saying

The 0.1% retinol here sits in the middle ground: gentle enough to pair with PDRN and peptides that buffer irritation, but not strong enough to satisfy those already seasoned with retinol. Those new to retinol find this a comfortable entry point that delivers firming benefits without harsh sensitivity. Anyone already using higher-strength retinol may find it feels like a step backward. Best used only at night, since retinol increases sun sensitivity.

"The firming has retinoids in. [...] I would only say my caution with this is it's mid-strength retinol. So if you're new to retinol, this is a great option. If like me, you're already established as a user of retinol, I think this would be a step back. [...] This is the 0.1% retinol, so that's the equivalent of like the Geek and Gorgeous AAME 10 if you're doing a rough side-by-side comparison. Mid-strength, I would say. I'm glad I tried it. I think it's wonderful, but I think it's going to be situational as to how it works with you."

"Given that it has retinol at 0.1%, it's the perfect amount to be able to deliver the ingredient to your skin and get all the benefits without overly irritating and sensitizing your skin. And because this has the PDRN to help with skin sensitivity and irritation, as well as so many peptides, when it says that this is a firming serum, they are not kidding. There are so many different peptide complexes in this formula. It's such a great formula for being able to get the benefits of retinol without having to worry about excessive skin irritation and sensitivity. This product is emblematic of the gentle active approach that is present in Korean skin care. [...] I definitely think this is an ideal option if you are someone who's just dipping your toe into the world of powerful ingredients like retinols and exfoliants. This is a great one to start with if you want to make sure that your skin doesn't have to worry about additional sensitivity and irritation. [...] Use it only overnight [...] because it can make your skin more sensitive to the sun. [...] This is a great overnight serum."

"This has 0.1% retinal in liposomes that protect the retinal from breaking down, combined with PDRN. I think it's really clever that they paired PDRN with retinal because retinal is sometimes irritating, so this formula can make it less harsh on skin, and that is exactly what I found. This is one of the most gentle retinal products I've tried. I had a little bit of skin peeling with it, which is standard for me with any retinoid, but it didn't feel irritating or stingy at all, my barrier just seemed really happy. It's unfragranced, lightweight and slightly creamy, in a handy pump bottle, doesn't smell like too much, and it does have some clinical testing behind it, mostly with elasticity and pores. Overall I really enjoyed this product, and it made me a lot more open to trying out other PDRN products."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Retinoids

Retinoids are among the best studied ingredients in dermatology, with solid evidence for acne and for the fine lines and rough texture that come from sun exposure. Dryness and flaking in the first few weeks are common and usually settle.

Source: DermNet

Niacinamide

Niacinamide has evidence behind it for redness, uneven tone and supporting the skin barrier, and it is usually well tolerated even by skin that reacts to most things.

Ceramides

Ceramides are part of the skin's own barrier, and moisturisers built around them have evidence for holding water in and settling the tightness and flaking that come with a damaged barrier.
