What the gurus are saying

This retinal-peptide mask earns consistent praise for being gentle enough for sensitive areas like the neck, where prescription-strength retinoids often cause irritation. The retinal formulation means you can skip layering other retinoids, and the hydrating base keeps skin comfortable overnight. The main catch: reviewers flag the price as steep, and the brand's costs have climbed noticeably across its range.

"I'm a huge fan of the Allies of Skin Retinal and Peptides complex. A lot of my patients use prescription strength tretinoin on their face for anti-aging, but as soon as it gets anywhere near their neck they have irritation. For patients with that concern I really like the Allies of Skin because you have all these anti-aging peptides plus you still have exposure to a retinoid, but it's retinaldehyde, so it's a little less irritating and a little less intense than prescription tretinoin."

"This one is expensive. The brand's gotten really pricey. It also contains other peptides in there which are nice for anti-aging and I like the packaging, it's a little bit more travel friendly."

Best Thick Moisturizers & Night Time Sleeping Masks - Favorite Overnight Facial Creams
"If you're a minimalist and you don't really want to go through a 20-step or 12-step evening routine, this product kind of combines them all in one moisturizing step with some actives in there. It's got retinal in there, which is nice because then you don't have to worry about using other retinoids or retinol or adapalene. This one does it all. It's also got a lot of good moisturizing ingredients as well as soothing ingredients as well as skin repairing peptides. If you're minimalist or just want a really short routine, this is sometimes the one I go to if I'm just dead tired, I'm done for the day, I barely have energy to wash my face. I'm going to apply this and it does the trick."

"I have the Allies of Skin Retinal + Peptides Overnight Repair Mask as a runner up just because of how expensive it is. They also now have two versions of this, the stronger version or the weaker version which is the five. It's expensive, the brand's gotten really pricey. It also contains other peptides in there which are nice for anti-aging, and I like the packaging, it's a little bit more travel friendly."

"They also have a really nice retinol, peptides and retinal overnight. I think it's just cream now, I think they changed overnight, but anyway so they've got a handful of goodies worth trying."

"The peptides in retinol overnight mask by Allies of Skin is another great one. It's a little bit pricey but it's really hydrating and the tube is a lot larger, it's 1.7 ounces, so it's larger than any of the other sizes. It's a little bit more expensive but you're also getting almost double the product."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Retinoids

Retinoids are among the best studied ingredients in dermatology, with solid evidence for acne and for the fine lines and rough texture that come from sun exposure. Dryness and flaking in the first few weeks are common and usually settle.

Niacinamide

Niacinamide has evidence behind it for redness, uneven tone and supporting the skin barrier, and it is usually well tolerated even by skin that reacts to most things.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.
