What the gurus are saying

This serum earns strong praise for its stable formulation and peptide-rich blend, with dermatologists noting many patients use it long-term without trouble and respect it as one of ZO's bestsellers. The one thing to watch: it contains both retinol and copper peptides, which both speed cell turnover, so those already using other exfoliating actives may want to ease off to a few times a week to avoid dryness or barrier damage. Applied before sunscreen as an antioxidant step, it works well for most skin types.

"This is by ZO Skin Health, I love it, it's daily Power Defense. So for those of you who've got money to burn but you also want effective skin care, this is [...] a great, great product. [...] It's not a vitamin C but it kind of works the same."
Curious about peptides? 👀✨ Are they actually worth it… or just another skincare trend? 🎙️ Watch
"This is by Zo Skin Health. It is Daily Power Defense and it already has a ton of peptides in it. It has the Matrixyl 3000. It's got [...] DNA repair. There's a lot of stuff going on with it. [...] This has a tiny bit of retinol in it. [...] So you have to be very careful when you're adding two things that exfoliate, right? The copper peptide is cell turnover and anything that has even a touch of retinoid is cell turnover. You want to make sure you're not doing too much of that, because it could make your skin dry and flaky and irritated and could damage the skin care barrier a little bit."

"Really nice formulation and not too much going wrong with it, and that's the reason why I see a lot of patients using that long-term without any problems. It's one of the biggest sellers. You can use it morning and night. It's a nice stable serum, probably your favorite all around serum in the range. I really like this product."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Retinoids

Retinoids are among the best studied ingredients in dermatology, with solid evidence for acne and for the fine lines and rough texture that come from sun exposure. Dryness and flaking in the first few weeks are common and usually settle.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
