  • Mechanical scrub not ideal for eczema

What the gurus are saying

The scrubs earn praise for their wide range of seasonal and year-round scents and affordable price, making them a popular gift choice. However, the physical exfoliating action means those with dry or sensitive skin may want to reserve them for warmer months or use them less frequently, since regular scrubbing can intensify dryness when the weather turns cold.

"I do have to go with more affordable options like the tree hut here. I actually liked Moroccan rose. That surprised me. Normally, I do not like rose scents, but perhaps this is more Moroccan than rose."

"This is fine if you have keratosis pilaris, for mechanical exfoliation. My experience with these Tree Hut ones is the scent is quite strong, it actively scents the body long after you have used it, it's pretty long lasting. I haven't used one in a long time though. [...] Make sure your skin is wet before you use this, don't go on dry skin, it'll [...] slough off much more easily if it's wet first."

"The Tree Hut Sugar Scrub nicely like rinses down the drain, right? Like once it mixes with the shower water and you're rinsing it off the skin, it's not like this residue all over the place."

"If you scrub too hard [...] and stack multiple exfoliants, [...] the barrier can't take it and the KP gets worse. [...] The sugar scrub from Tree Hut that I have used is nice, but heavily scented, it actively scents your skin. I used the jelly bear one [...] at night and [...] hours later getting into bed it was like I was going to sleep with the candy store. It was a little potent, I was shocked because usually rinse-off products don't heavily scent the skin like that."

"The sugar scrub, that's a pass for me, I don't dabble in the body sanding arts."

"These Tree Hut body scrubs are all over the internet, but they're not really the best way to exfoliate. If you like them and they don't bother you, by all means carry on, but I definitely wouldn't use this kind of thing if you have eczema or very sensitive skin. [...] I prefer using something like a urea or lactic acid leave-on moisturizer instead of a mechanical scrub [...] to soften and deeply hydrate the skin."

"I tried something from Tree Hut, this popular sugar scrub, years and years ago, long before I was on YouTube, and I just found that it made a mess everywhere."

"So there's more chance for me to buy the Tree Hut ones. Like for instance, every Christmas they come out with the same peppermint candy cane kind of thing, but they call it something different every year. But I love it. I think this year it's called like merry mint or something like that. And I love the way that smells. So I'm always going to get that. But then typically I just get like the vanilla Tree Hut scrub."

"I do love a tree hut body scrub but it takes me an insanely long time to finish one. If it's something where I'm really really loving the scent, I'm like obsessed with it, even then, because the physical scrubs on my body, I could do that in the warmer months, but once it starts to get a little colder out I can't really be scrubbing so much because my skin gets really dry."

"This one has no scent, so if you're sensitive to that it's great, but I don't know why it's so popular, it feels very safe, that's it, and I don't think I'm going to repurchase it. [...] It's pretty rough as a scrub, so [...] if you have dry mature skin like me it's way too much overexfoliating. It also comes in a jar which is hard to dig into, and the rose scent is too strong for me."

"I love the Tree Hut body scrubs. I've had Moroccan Rose and the Sol one, and they're a fabulous, super inexpensive body care product that would make a great stocking stuffer."

THE BEST DRUGSTORE MAKEUP 2024!! 😍
"I tried it this year and it is so beautiful. I actually ended up trying it because it won a Best of Beauty award, but I have used it every week basically since. It's a beautiful formula and really nice scent. I use it for more of a deep exfoliation because it has a little bit of a chunkier sugar granule than some of my other body scrubs, but it's a really really nice little treat in the shower."

"This is the Tree Hut Moroccan Rose Shea Sugar Scrub. It is so beautiful and very exfoliating. It gives a very, very deep exfoliation, but it's still gentle. I love the sticky texture because of the sugar. You're still able to buff it all over the skin. It's not so sticky to where it feels gross on the skin, and it rinses off really beautifully. I really love it. My skin, especially my elbows and knees, have just been happier since using this. I really love it."
TRYING DRUGSTORE ALLURE WINNERS 2024!!!
"I really really love the texture of this. It is so thick in the best way, and the sugar granules in here really exfoliate the skin. It's a little more aggressive than what I'm used to, but honestly I really did like it. I feel like it left my skin extremely exfoliated but not dried out, which I really appreciated. When you add water to it, it just really holds the sugars very well and allows you to have quite a bit of control when you're exfoliating your body."

"The tree hut Moroccan rose body scrub, if you didn't see my drugstore version of this series I actually tried this out for the first time and I love it already. It's a very viral product and a favorite among both the readers and the editors of Allure."
It's TIME! 🎉 THE BEST SKINCARE OF 2024!!!
"I also discovered the Tree Hut Moroccan Rose sugar scrub. I feel like a lot of you probably have already tried this, I hadn't until the Sephora Best of Beauty Awards. This is so good as well. This is definitely a little bit more of an intense scrub versus the Josie Maran. It has bigger sugar granules in here, but I love the texture. I actually really love the smell as well."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Retinoids

Retinoids are among the best studied ingredients in dermatology, with solid evidence for acne and for the fine lines and rough texture that come from sun exposure. Dryness and flaking in the first few weeks are common and usually settle.

Vitamin C

Topical vitamin C is an antioxidant with reasonable evidence for dullness and uneven tone. It breaks down in light and air, so how a product is formulated and packaged matters as much as the percentage on the front.

Source: DermNet

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
