What the gurus are saying

The big draw here is SPF 40, which is genuinely rare in lip balms, and gurus keep repurchasing it. Most love the minty smell and flavor, the barely-there pink gloss, and how hydrated it makes lips look. However, the chemical sunscreen filters can taste unpleasant if they get in your mouth, so worth knowing if you're particular about sunscreen flavor on your lips.

"SPF 40 for a lip product is hard to find, and I've already gone through two. They have a trio on sale, I'm definitely picking it up, it's absolutely a no-brainer. These live in my purse all summer long, especially after the lip cancer scare I had a few years ago."

"One other sunscreen product that I wanted to mention is lip sunscreen. Most of the SPF lip balms taste terrible, feel terrible, dry out your lips. So I tried this one from Supergoop and it is their Glow Gloss in pink peppermint and it's an SPF 40. It's got a peppermint scent to it. It doesn't really taste so much like anything. It's very neutral flavor-wise. It's not like sweet. It doesn't taste terrible like sunscreen. It's just like a little pink lip gloss. Very easy to apply, doesn't put a ton of color on the lips, but absolutely a beautiful product to protect your lips from the sun."

"This one smells great. [...] I love that it's minty and it's just kind of a barely there pink gloss. It gives your lips some shine, makes them look hydrated. I have one in my handbag. I have one next to the front door for when I take my dog out for a walk. I just quickly butter up my lips with this and then they're protected from the sun."

"I got a new caramel flavor of the Glow Gloss from Supergoop. I was so excited about this one, but it tastes terrible. These chemical filters in lip balms are so awful if they get in your mouth."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Sunscreen filters

Sun protection is the best evidenced way to slow visible ageing, and the filters are what does the work. Mineral and chemical filters both protect when a product is applied thickly enough and often enough, which is where most people fall short rather than on the choice of filter.

Peptides

Peptides are short protein fragments meant to signal repair. The evidence for them is thinner than for retinoids or vitamin C, and it varies a lot by the specific peptide, so the category is more promising than proven.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
