What the gurus are saying

This retinol uses sodium ascorbyl phosphate, a vitamin C derivative instead of L-ascorbic acid, letting both actives coexist in one product without layering fuss. Gurus see it as a major simplification since you get multiple active benefits without worrying about compatibility or sequence. However, it comes in a jar, not a dropper, so you're gauging the amount by eye.

"The StriVectin Super C Retinol, I loved when this product came out because it came out at the height of people saying you cannot combine retinol with vitamin C, meanwhile StriVectin released this product which has both vitamin C and retinol because you can combine those, but going with a vitamin C derivative instead of L-ascorbic acid is a smart approach, and that's what StriVectin did, they used sodium ascorbyl phosphate which is my personal favorite vitamin C derivative that has research supporting its use for fighting acne. You could buy this product if you want to simplify your routine, it does have some fragrance but it's probably a nice option."

"The StriVectin Super C Retinol has vitamin A, B, and C, so it's like a no-brainer sort of product where you don't have to think too hard and you still get three actives without worrying about layering and how much to use. The only thing I don't like about this is that it isn't a dropper bottle."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Retinoids

Retinoids are among the best studied ingredients in dermatology, with solid evidence for acne and for the fine lines and rough texture that come from sun exposure. Dryness and flaking in the first few weeks are common and usually settle.

Vitamin C

Topical vitamin C is an antioxidant with reasonable evidence for dullness and uneven tone. It breaks down in light and air, so how a product is formulated and packaged matters as much as the percentage on the front.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.
