What the gurus are saying

This gel-cream delivers hydration without feeling greasy, thanks to its blend of five ceramides and peptides that work to seal moisture in and calm the skin. Most gurus praise it as especially well-suited to oily or acne-prone skin that still needs barrier support, though one reviewer found it moisturized adequately but didn't perceive the deep repair the product promises. If your skin is dehydrated or compromised, the light occlusive quality may help lock in other treatments, but those seeking intensive barrier repair may want to assess whether this lightweight formula meets their needs.

"Unfortunately, the Skin Fix, this is their gel moisturizer. Just doesn't work for me. It tends to pill with a lot of my other skincare."

"If you want something a little heavier, try SkinFix Barrier+ Restoring Gel Cream. This is a really nice gel-based moisturizer, it just gives a little bit more long-lasting hydration than the Peach and Lily. I've also been reaching for this one."

"Their triple lipid cream is a favorite of mine for the winter months but they also came out with a lighter more fast absorbing gel consistency for the spring and summer months. This has the same patent pending BL3 lipid complex which contains a patent pending blend of vitamins lipids and peptides that can really help to repair your skin barrier. I find that this formulation is really soothing as well as hydrating without being overpowering and I love that SkinFix came out with a version of this that's heavier for the winter months and then this version for the warmer months."

"This is their barrier restoring gel cream, it's also $54. This one is geared toward oily skin types or acne prone skin types. This one also contains an updated lipid barrier complex and then also contains several peptides, green tea, squalane, folic acid, no fragrance."

"There is a good amount of moisture to this but it actually doesn't feel greasy or overly emollient. There's just a little bit more of that skin softening, a little bit more of that silkiness, a little bit of that like my skin feels moisturized kind of feel along with that deep drink of hydration. This one actually has a little bit more occlusivity, so I think if you do suffer with dehydration this might be the smarter choice not just because of the barrier protecting ingredients, but also because that little kiss of occlusion helps to tuck all your skincare in, hug in all the hydration, keep it in place, and act as a little bit of a barrier on your skin to prevent the dehydration."

"I had a sample of the SkinFix Barrier+ Restoring Gel Cream. I felt like it did a good job to moisturize the skin, but I really didn't feel like it repaired my skin. When I was using this, I used it when my skin was balanced and normal and then when my skin needed some TLC, and I didn't feel like I received the relief like I was expecting. This has ceramides in it and it's supposed to be very repairing, and I didn't get that from this. The gel is very lightweight. This wouldn't be something that I would purchase, especially a full size. If I had to pick between this and another option, I would go with the other one because this one is very satisfying and you do get that relief and your skin is repaired and moisturized. I just didn't really like it."

"It's a great product but I just can't stand the smell. Some people might like it, but the smell is subjective and for me personally, I kept smelling it and I was just like, no. It's in the middle for me personally."

"The SkinFix Barrier Restoring Gel Cream is one of my moisturizer picks for oily skin. SkinFix as a brand makes great moisturizers. This is a super lightweight moisturizer, and I would almost consider it more like a hydrator. This has 2% niacinamide, which is going to contribute to that oil control aspect of it, but it also has some really nice nourishing ingredients like squalane and allantoin as well as hyaluronic acid to give that immediate plumping effect. If you like the way gel creams feel on the skin and you're looking for one that fits really seamlessly into your routine and doesn't feel sticky or tacky on the skin, this is a wonderful option."

"Another one that has a really good top like this is SkinFix. They have their barrier repair, it's blue. That is another excellent one to do this with and mix in acids."

"This is a new product from Skinfix that has an amazing lightweight consistency but does a really good job at packing a punch for hydration and moisture. I love Skinfix for that reason, all their products are deeply nourishing. This one is a little bit more expensive, so if you want a cheaper or more affordable product I would recommend the Rovectin moisturizer, but I have been using this one really regularly and I also enjoy using it overnight during the summertime."

"This is another new product and it has a heavier cream-based option that now comes in a lighter weight form, and I'm really loving this gel option. The cream version I've tried to use on and off, and it's definitely heavy on the skin and very occlusive, so I wouldn't choose it if you have very oily skin. But this new gel form is much lighter on the skin while still being formulated to really accomplish that barrier repair. It absorbs in so much more quickly than the cream version and you still get that same hydrating feel. This product claims to repair your barrier after just one hour and give you hydration up to 72 hours. It has saccharide isomerate which supports the skin barrier, niacinamide which helps visibly even the skin tone and absorb excess oil, a heptapeptide blend which helps nourish the skin microbiome, and zinc PCA which is great for oily skin because it helps control excess sebum production and can calm redness and irritation. I really love this product specifically for acne-prone skin, if you have fungal acne or malassezia folliculitis, if you have a damaged skin barrier. I really love this for nighttime use on nights that you take off from using a retinoid to really help reset the skin barrier or strengthen it. If you struggle with maintaining a healthy skin barrier while dealing with skin issues like acne or textured skin, or if you have a routine with a lot of skincare actives in it, this can definitely be worth the money for its unique ingredients and repairing properties."

"I also love this one for really really dry skin now my facial moisturizer would be the SkinFix Barrier+ Restoring Gel Cream this year so I'm a lipid guy normally now when it gets a little bit colder I'm going to be going into their dark blue one the one that's a little bit heavier but probably most reused this year or I know most reused this year because I purchase it the most often is actually the SkinFix Barrier+ Restoring Gel Cream. Now it just is a little bit less heavy but still the same like their textures are incredible on their moisturizers just absolutely phenomenal. I've been kind of having a little bit less thicker creams lately and I love it."

"They have basically the gel summer version of it and that's their gel cream and it's just the same sort of finish like in a bit lighter weight essentially. So if you're somebody who loves the skin fix heavier one you're gonna love this one. It comes in like the lighter blue. Skin fix always does a lot of clinical studies, they always have good science behind their products, always dermatologists."

Debunking Common Acne Myths! Drinking water? Fried food? Spot treating? | Doctorly Debunked
"Skinfix just came out with a gel cream that is much more lightweight. It's a gel type, but it's not the gel type where you put it on and you feel like it just evaporates right away. It does leave a little bit of a cream behind with it. So it's not like thick cream, but you still feel moisturized afterwards. You don't feel like it's just water that evaporates from the skin. It also has niacinamide and zinc, which are anti-inflammatory and also helping treat acne. It has squalane oil, which deeply moisturizes because it doesn't sit on the top of the skin, it actually digs deeper into the deep layers of skin, which is why this oil doesn't necessarily feel like an oil when you put it on. It's also got allantoin, green tea, and a peptide that acts like a probiotic. A lot of really supporting ingredients that are not just sitting on top of your skin, but are actually benefiting your skin if you have acne."

"I don't like skin barrier restoring creams that are thick, medicinal, clinical feeling, but this is a gel cream that does all the good things for your barrier with all those really nice skin-soothing, restoring ingredients without being thick and heavy. It's great for my combination skin. It has niacinamide and zinc PCA which are great if you're prone to breakouts or very oily, green tea for antioxidants, and squalene - so it's nicely moisturizing without being greasy."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Niacinamide

Niacinamide has evidence behind it for redness, uneven tone and supporting the skin barrier, and it is usually well tolerated even by skin that reacts to most things.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.
