What the gurus are saying

The serum delivers visible brightening and plumpness with beginner-friendly retinol that gurus praise for its stability and formulation quality, though the fragrance is a genuine sticking point. Those with sensitive skin or fragrance sensitivity may want to patch-test first, as some found the added scent irritating rather than beneficial.

"If you're in your mid-20s and up and you want to work on fine lines and wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and keeping your pores at a minimal size, consider a retinol cream or serum at bedtime. All you need is a thin film, or a pea-sized amount to the entire face. RoC was the first retinol I ever used as a dermatology resident. My only critique is that this serum is quite fragrant."

"The formula is really well formulated with all the glycerin and all of this amazing goodness, you get vitamin C super super brightening, and the way they have worked with the retinol and the quality of retinol you use, you see inherent glow, you want to see the quicker skin cell turnover, you want to see that brightness in your skin, you want to see plumpness. It is one of the most fabulous retinol, beginner-friendly mid-strength retinol. [...] The company first formulated the over-the-counter retinol. Retinol was always a prescription-grade product, so it was not available over the counter. RoC stabilized retinol available over the counter, RoC actually maxed and mastered that formula, and since then they've just been innovating. [...] The deep wrinkle is a really really good formula, it is better than the dupe, the drunk elephant retinol. I would highly recommend that you try the RoC Retinol. It is absolutely fabulous, [...] it's a really good formula, and it's better than the dupe."

"It added fragrance and irritant it's a big mistake"

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Retinoids

Retinoids are among the best studied ingredients in dermatology, with solid evidence for acne and for the fine lines and rough texture that come from sun exposure. Dryness and flaking in the first few weeks are common and usually settle.

Vitamin C

Topical vitamin C is an antioxidant with reasonable evidence for dullness and uneven tone. It breaks down in light and air, so how a product is formulated and packaged matters as much as the percentage on the front.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.
