What the gurus are saying

This retinol formula thickens the skin layer beneath the surface, but dermatologists flag a significant irritation risk: the retinol concentration is undisclosed (estimated around 0.1-0.15%), the formula lacks calming ingredients like niacinamide or centella asiatica, and fragrance is added on top, stacking irritation on thin eye-area skin. One dermatologist rates it harshly for these gaps, especially the risk of retinoid dermatitis and dark spots on skin of color, while another notes RoC retinols can feel irritating overall but are gentler than prescription-strength alternatives. Anyone with sensitive or darker skin may want to patch-test first or look for a formula with built-in soothers.

"That creates exactly the dark circles that you're trying to get rid of. And then for some wild reason they thought let's add in fragrance into the Inkey. So you basically just stacked the irritation risk further. The chemistry of the retinol is right, but the vehicle around it is wrong. This formula unfortunately gets a two out of 10. It's got fragrance in it, retinol which is irritating, no anti-inflammatories, wrong packaging, should be in an airless pump, and £25 at Target."

"RoC has great options of retinol, and I do get feedback from patients using RoC that they feel irritated. It's definitely potent, but [...] the Retinol Correction line is going to be way more tolerable than tretinoin."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Vitamin C

Topical vitamin C is an antioxidant with reasonable evidence for dullness and uneven tone. It breaks down in light and air, so how a product is formulated and packaged matters as much as the percentage on the front.
