What the gurus are saying

This product delivers dramatic instant results by forming a film that shrinks as it dries, and most gurus confirm it works as advertised, though the effect is purely temporary and fades within hours. The main split: some find it wearable over makeup with practice (the newer formula applies easier and avoids the white cast of the original), while others say makeup significantly weakens the effect or that the product pills and creases visibly when you smile or move your face. A few also note it can irritate sensitive skin or feel uncomfortable on dry skin, and reapplication or touch-ups are needed to maintain the look.

"It's marketed as an instant tightening and smoothing treatment for the under eye area that visibly reduces the appearance of fine lines and puffiness within minutes. I'm always skeptical of these kind of products that promise these drastic results in a few minutes. And there were a few reviews complaining that this product was a complete scam, but it works. This does work. It's a temporary dramatic result that disappears once you wash your face. It does seem to make a noticeable difference for most people and people are showing off their transformations all over Tik Tok, Instagram, and everywhere else."

"I used it on her 11s and on her forehead wrinkles. Bamp gone. She has a scar on her eyebrow, both eyebrows that really bug her. She has under eye wrinkles and a little bit of an eye bag under both eyes. Used it on both those things. Instantly looked so much better. So, this really works. I've got it on my neck today because I always feel like my neck is looking really crepey and really crinkly, especially when I look down like this. Like, there they are. But compared to what my neck normally looks like without this on, that is a far improvement. The reason I didn't put it with makeup is because it doesn't work well with makeup. Like you put makeup on over it and it reduces the effect by about 50%. You might need to play with it a little bit, but once you get the hang of it, it can really look great."

"This is really a breakthrough formula. It is so much better than the original. It works so much better. It really is easy wear. It's much easier to apply, much easier to work with. I think it works a little bit better and you don't end up with that crusty, scaly looking skin even after a few hours. You can also put makeup on over it, which makes it so much more wearable."

"It's the Peter Thomas Roth Instant FirmX Temporary Eye Tightener EasyWear Formula. I used it on myself under my eyes and it worked really well. I had my mom in for a model. She's 88 and it was amazing how it completely got rid of the wrinkles on her upper lip, on a scar on her eyelid, her eye bags, her 11s. I mean, it took care of every wrinkle. After that, I did a little short video using it on my neck where it made my neck look so much better. I'm actually wearing it today for today's video, and I just feel so much more confident about my neck. The answer is probably about 4 to 5 hours. I'd say the more that the skin that you apply it to moves, the less long it lasts. But if you have like a wedding or a party or even you're just going out with your girlfriends and you want your wrinkles to look a little bit better, then you can slap this on and it will make your wrinkles look much much better. You can't really put makeup on over it and have the effect stay because you know it is something that has to dry and form a film. And it's really that film former that makes the tightening effect. And you can feel it tightening."

"This works better over skincare and sunscreen and a little bit of makeup. But be careful if you are putting it on over makeup because that's when it can mix with it and get a little bit white and chalky. So it definitely is a product that's best used just over skincare and sunscreen. Love this product. Definitely a great thing to pick up. It gets a five-star endorsement from me. I've used it a lot and I love it."

"Unfortunately, I can't use it because it causes a little bit of burning in my under eye area. Kind of not worth it for me. I would rather use the original formula if I'm going to use a product like this before makeup prep. It just doesn't cause that irritation. On the pricey side, I would say."

PTR FirmX Eye Tight Review – OLD vs NEW on 50+ Skin (Concealer Hack Tested!)
"The Instant FirmX Temporary Eye Tightener, the new easy-wear formula. It has a slight amount of pigment and a creamier texture compared to the original version. I've only tried this once, but it does come with a brush, and I've figured out that slightly dampening that brush really helps the application. It's great to see that you can also put makeup on over it. The one thing I don't see in any of the pictures is the white crusties, which is really nice."

"These treatments work as a serum that you apply to the surface of your skin and let dry into essentially a film that contracts as it dries, making the skin look and feel tighter. It's kind of like if you put Elmer's glue on your skin and let it dry, it does feel like it shrinks and tightens that skin up underneath. One of the most popular versions of these instant tightening creams is from Peter Thomas Roth, and they had a video that went viral on TikTok showing the amazing results you can get from a cream like this. These may be great if you've got a wedding to go to or a class reunion or a hot date, but keep in mind that these results do fade away oftentimes within just a couple hours after that. You have to reapply it or you have to leave so they don't see how you really look. It's also important to realize that these creams will not permanently reduce the aging or permanently tighten up your skin. Sometimes these creams don't work very well if you're wearing makeup over them."

"The Peter Thomas Roth Instant FirmX does work, you remember when it went viral with the video of a lady applying it to her eye area and you could instantly see it tighten. The catch is you cannot easily apply makeup on top of it, it basically ruins the effect, so you have to choose between wanting your eye area to look a bit tighter temporarily, which isn't a permanent effect, or wearing makeup. For me, makeup wins every single day over a temporary tightening sensation that I didn't even like on my dry skin. No, no, no, no, no."

21 Days of Beauty Week 3: VERY Mixed Thoughts
"The problem I have with these temporary tighteners is I do believe it will temporarily tighten with these silicate ingredients in it, but it just doesn't do that much for you long term. That's why I prefer ingredients like ginseng, peptides, retinoids. It only has a three star rating."

"The instant results are incredible and it really does look amazing, but give it about 30 minutes, an hour, an hour and a half, and [...] the formula pills up so quickly and bunches together, leaving this really gross appearance of so much texture and piled up product on the under-eye area that is almost more obvious than just leaving the eye bags the way they are. Particularly if you're someone like myself who's very expressive, who smiles a lot and makes a lot of faces, that's where I noticed the most intense downside of this product, it just bunches up so quickly. I remember trying to use this and talking to other makeup artists about it, and pretty much across the board they were like, 'Yeah, it looks really good at the beginning, but I ended up not using it anymore because after a certain time passed it would just look really bad on my clients.' This product has been around for so long, it is by no means a new technology or innovation. It's really unfortunate because I really would love those results to stay, but it's hard because you really won't find a product that gives this instantaneous of results that can fight against the natural movement and aging that we have in our face."

Are These TikTok Products Worth the Hype? Smash or Pass!
"The Peter Thomas Roth Instant FirmX Temporary Eye Tightener, pass. I know it's viral, but it does leave this film on the skin that when you use it on your eye areas or your smile areas, as you smile it will create these visible creases, and there's not really much of a skin benefit. It's more of a surface level appearance difference, but you'll notice as you smile it becomes more visible, so I'd say pass."

"This is the Peter Thomas Roth Instant FirmX, a product that's gone viral for the last two years on social media because the effects are so dramatic. What's actually happening is it's essentially an acrylic polymer of sorts that forms a glue on the surface of the skin, and that glue tightens and basically causes the under eyes to essentially just collapse in on itself. The pros are that it has an immediate effect. The cons are some people are allergic to the acrylic, and second con that we see is that with movement of the eye, eventually that glue basically falls apart. It can leave a residue on the skin that some people don't like, so it doesn't last very long and it also can create a residue that's difficult to layer makeup over. But even with makeup, it does actually not create a chalky appearance."

"It has sodium silicate, and as it dries down it just tightens the skin. It's very temporary, but it definitely works. One issue is it's all in the application. These can get really flaky and peel up, and depending on your skin, for some people that's more of an issue. I actually never ran into that issue with this, but I see that complaint a lot. I think a lot of it may just have to do with your skin, especially if you have oily skin. My eyelids are not particularly oily, but some people do have really oily eyelids, and I think that would make it peel up more readily."

"Products out there that temporarily tighten eyelid sagging, under eye sagging, upper eyelid sagging, they basically work like glue to shrink the skin down temporarily. For example, the Peter Thomas Roth Instant FirmX. I reviewed it a few years ago."

"For cosmetic purposes, for makeup here and there, the Peter Thomas Roth really does work. I saw some comments saying you can't get it to not leave a white residue, but when I've been trying it out I've never gotten that white residue, I just use a rice grain amount and pat it on. The other trick is to use a makeup brush to blend it out, that's another way to reduce the chances that this thing leaves that white crusty stuff."
BEST PRODUCT FOR EYE BAGS? 🤔 *it Cosmetics vs Peter Thomas Roth*
"I definitely see tightening of that under eye swelling after the allotted time, I can feel it tightening down. It also helps brighten up the under eye area by flattening things out so light reflects off the skin surface more evenly. Based on my experience using both of these products, I think the Peter Thomas Roth offers a more dramatic under eye tightening effect. It has ascorbic acid, a peptide found in Matrixyl 3000, and panthenol, which is very moisturizing. Price wise it's thirty eight dollars for one ounce. Peter Thomas Roth is less expensive, has a better ingredient profile, and gives more dramatic skin tightening. That said, like these types of products in general, it can be drying and irritating with daily use, so I'd lean into it situationally for certain events rather than every day."
HOW TO TIGHTEN UNDER EYE SKIN // DERMATOLOGIST @DrDrayzday
"This product contains sodium silicate, a mineral salt that dries on the surface of the skin with a tightening effect that is temporary. If you have under eye bags, dark circles, or festoons, it may temporarily improve the appearance, and people like it because it helps them with putting on eye makeup. However, sodium silicate is pretty drying and astringent, and the greatest risk is irritation and contact dermatitis that can make your under eye issues worse. If you have dry fine wrinkles under the eyes, this product may actually make them appear more prominent. At $38, it's pretty expensive for an eye product, and results are going to be hit or miss. You need to understand it's just a temporary cosmetic change, similar to concealer, but for some people I can definitely see how it's worth it, and if you have a lot of redundancy in the skin under the eyes where makeup settles into creases, I can see wanting to use this."

"I got this a while ago not for me but I have a couple people that I wanted to try this on, couple friends and family. It's this instant eye tightener. I'm going to put up some before and after pictures on the screen. It is insane the results that this can get instantly. It's like almost face lift type of results in minutes. These before and after pictures are actually real. This stuff is really cool."

"The Peter Thomas Roth Instant Firm X treatment will get rid of your crow's feet and the look of saggy skin or drooping skin around the eyes in just three minutes after applying it. It is temporary and it will wear off. It will take a little bit of practice to apply it correctly. I actually have a patient who uses this and it truly looks amazing and is so impressive. She puts makeup on right over it as well. This one will actually give you instant results on the same level as Botox, so this one is pretty impressive."

"I tried the viral Peter Thomas Roth Instant Firm X eye tightener way back when, and it worked. It helped to smooth and snatch my under eye area. I have these fine lines sometimes, and sometimes they look a little deeper than fine, kind of like medium fine or whatever, and it helped tremendously. However, there was a learning curve in getting to use it because use too much and your under eye area could be snatched, but then it be ashy at the same time. But the brand just came out with a new and improved version that promises no white cast. It's a little bit tinted and it's a lot easier to work with. These work like shrink wrap film. They're fast drying film formers. As water evaporates, the film contracts like a micro shrink wrap, gently pulling the skin flatter so that the fine lines and puffiness look smoother. Sometimes products like this use something colloquially called liquid glass which helps the film set rigidly as it dries. But you're getting cosmetic physics here, not collagen boosting."

Anti-Aging Routines That Work… But Get CRAZY By the End
"I initially did a campaign with them for the temporary eye tightener product and while I don't have big old bags underneath my eyes I do have fine lines and wrinkles but I put the product on and I'm looking and I don't see a difference. I was about to be like PTR we might have to cut this campaign because I'm not seeing anything, but then when I looked back at the footage I was like oh wait a minute that thing temporarily erased the fine lines and wrinkles underneath my eyes."
$20 to $20,000 Under Eye Treatments: What REALLY Works?!?!
"I actually did a campaign with Peter Thomas Roth back in the day with this and I was about to be like look y'all going to have to cancel me out of this because it ain't do nothing for me but then I look back at my footage and I'm like oh shoot it actually helped with the fine lines and wrinkles underneath my eyes like you couldn't see them. There is a learning curve with it because if you put too much on and if you don't use the proper tools it could wind up looking very white underneath the eyes or where you might feel like it doesn't work at all. If you have the patience I would say it's something that's worth trying out because when used right it does amazing things."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Vitamin C

Topical vitamin C is an antioxidant with reasonable evidence for dullness and uneven tone. It breaks down in light and air, so how a product is formulated and packaged matters as much as the percentage on the front.

Source: DermNet

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.

Source: DermNet

Peptides

Peptides are short protein fragments meant to signal repair. The evidence for them is thinner than for retinoids or vitamin C, and it varies a lot by the specific peptide, so the category is more promising than proven.
