What the gurus are saying

This serum works beautifully on sun damage, PIH, and melasma. It combines glycolic acid, tranexamic acid, licorice, and urea, which work together to target these dark spots, and some people love it enough to restock. However, the denatured alcohol and fragrance present a potential irritation risk for those with sensitive skin, so patch-testing first makes sense if you're reactive to either.

"I know some people who really enjoy the Murad Rapid Dark Spot Correcting Serum and will be restocking it in this sale, and that makes sense to me. It has a lot of brightening ingredients: glycolic acid, tranexamic acid, some licorice, some urea. It does also have denatured alcohol, though that can help push ingredients deeper into your skin, and it does also have fragrance. I'll be passing, but I know a lot of people will be restocking this."

"The Murad Rapid Dark Spot Correcting Serum is a cult favorite. It uses glycolic acid as well as resorcinol and tranexamic acid to combat irregular pigment."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Alpha hydroxy acids

Alpha hydroxy acids loosen the bonds holding dead cells at the surface. The evidence supports smoother texture and more even tone over time, and they can leave skin more sensitive to sun.

Tranexamic acid

Tranexamic acid has a growing body of clinical evidence for melasma and the stubborn patches of pigment that other ingredients struggle with.

Urea

Urea both holds water in the skin and gently loosens dead surface cells. At higher strengths it has good evidence for very dry or thickened skin.
