What the gurus are saying

This retinol causes peeling in some, and experts disagree on whether the 0.6% strength works well across different skin types. Some found it too intense for their needs and prefer prescription retin-A instead, while others endorse it as a solid, accessible option. Because of that peeling, it may not be the gentlest pick for sensitive skin or anyone just starting with retinol.

"Simple formula but rather than going up to 0.6% retinol I'd rather you jumped to retin-a. It even feels very similar, actually is peeling a little bit but that might happen. The smell's not too bad but for me this is too strong for my skin, my color family."

"The 0.6% you can move to already. The cheapest one starts at about $6.90. Retinol and retinoid, they're actually called retinol ester, retinol palmitate. Retinol palmitate together, retinol ester, convert to retinol, retinol converts into retinoic acid in a step three-step conversion process. The good news is retinol as a beginner tolerate, and it's great for people who have sensitive skin or who are beginners, but in general I would recommend, if you're super sensitive, start with a retinol. Retinol converts into retinoic acid."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Retinoids

Retinoids are among the best studied ingredients in dermatology, with solid evidence for acne and for the fine lines and rough texture that come from sun exposure. Dryness and flaking in the first few weeks are common and usually settle.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.
