What the gurus are saying

Both gurus who reviewed this cream call it overpriced for what's actually in it. The formula relies heavily on mineral oil (a cheap ingredient found in budget moisturizers) plus petrolatum and glycerin, which do moisturize but don't justify the $100, $275 price tag. The real cost goes to marketing and celebrity endorsements rather than standout skincare science. If you're spending this much on a moisturizer, gurus suggest you'd get far better ingredients elsewhere.

✕Nay
"I would not put my money anywhere near this, especially for this price and with the perfume. La Mer is to a point where it is just ridiculous. They play music to their skincare and charge like four hundred dollars. They give all of their stuff to celebrities. [...] They're a legacy brand owned by Estee Lauder, and they just pay so much money into marketing and celebrity endorsements because they can, because they sell their products at such a high markup."
✕Nay
"I'm sick of seeing La Mer as often as I do, because if you're going to spend three hundred dollars on a moisturizer I would want it to be the best of the best ingredients, and [...] it's the complete opposite with their products, I look at the ingredient list and I'm very uninspired by it. I'm glad it hasn't broken her out, but [...] you don't need to spend that much money on a moisturizer in order to find one that doesn't break you out."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.

Peptides

Peptides are short protein fragments meant to signal repair. The evidence for them is thinner than for retinoids or vitamin C, and it varies a lot by the specific peptide, so the category is more promising than proven.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
