What the gurus are saying

This mineral sunscreen earns consistent praise for its creamy texture, smooth blending, and dewy finish with no white cast, plus the tint helps defend against visible light and hyperpigmentation. The main split: most gurus love it, but some report pilling over a full skincare routine, the sodium hyaluronate may be the culprit. The tint also skews deeper and more golden, which works beautifully on medium to deeper skin tones but may feel too bronze or heavy on paler skin; those prone to pilling may want to apply it over fewer layers or test it first.

"This is lovely because it has no white cast, it's all mineral formulation, it's creamy, blends nicely, got this nice kind of dewy finish that is just lovely, really beautiful. And also because it contains tint, it's great for those that struggle with hyperpigmentation because the iron oxide helps to defend against visible light. It's got nano zinc particles that blocks UVA and UVB, ceramides, peptides, hyaluronic acid, allantoin. It's almost like skin care and sunscreen mixed together. It's really amazing and blends nicely without leaving a cast."

"The first new launch that I've really been enjoying that's very elegant and nice is from Kosas. Their DreamBeam Silicone-Free Mineral Sunscreen SPF 40. As the name implies, this is a silicone-free pure mineral sunscreen that contains zinc oxide. It is tinted, only comes in one shade though. Texture-wise, it's a lightweight lotion cream that applies very elegantly, very smoothly. It is very nice in the sense that you can wear it a lot and your skin doesn't feel heavy or thick. Very breathable, but also great under makeup. Ingredient-wise, it does contain peptides which we know help to boost elasticity and plump the skin and reduce the appearance of fine wrinkles. Also contains ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and allantoim, all great wonderful ingredients to hydrate, soothe, and support the skin barrier. So it's just a lovely daily sunscreen. And I love the fact that it is tinted because tint does help to offset visible light that may play a role in either skin aging or hyperpigmentation. Overall, great one to wear. And also it is water resistant, I believe up to either 40 or 80 minutes. So again, another great product for wearing this during the summer time. The only downside I would say is that it does give you more of a bronzed, dewy look, which I think is a great look to go for."

"I'm going to use the Kosas DreamBeam, which is the comfy smooth sunscreen. This is quite new to me but it's so beautiful. I love the needle nose and this works really really nicely with all the skin care underneath. It just melts in, there's no pilling, there's no moving around."

"This is one of my favorites. It's a mineral tinted sunscreen with 21.7% zinc oxide, so that's generous. It's SPF 40 and has 80 minute water and sweat resistance. I like these because they're like a really light thin texture. You can see on my skin tone it's like a little bit neutral cool but they also dry down pretty matte. There's the slightest amount of mica or shimmer reflective pigment in there. It has a thinner texture, more matte finish, and more neutral tone compared to other options."

"The packaging is so adorable and it feels so smooth on your skin. It blends in so smoothly and it makes your skin look so glowy. I love this, I am a fan of that Kosas sunscreen. I do think that depending on what I have on my skin there can be pilling, so I've honestly haven't been that motivated to use it because I've just been kind of discouraged by the pilling. I don't think it agrees with all skin tones. I think it happens to work with mine, but I don't think it's dark enough for people with darker skin tones. It's a lovely sunscreen and if it matches your skin type go for it. When people ask me what's their favorite sunscreen, I tell them it's the one that you're willing to wear. So if you like this and it's going to motivate you to wear sunscreen every day, I'm a fan."

"If you're looking for a nice tinted mineral sunscreen that is super lightweight and moisturizing but also contains peptides ceramides to strengthen that skin barrier and hyaluronic acid to hydrate and plump, you have to check out this one."

"This is the Kosas DreamBeam, a broad-spectrum SPF 40 silicone-free mineral sunscreen. It really is a multitasking mineral sunscreen. It contains peptides, a blend of ceramids, hyaluronic acid to help your skin hold onto water, as well as allantoin to help protect and nourish your skin barrier. I like that it's tinted. It goes on so nicely, so smoothly, very radiant. It's very, very hydrating, very, very creamy. It provides light coverage. This is more of a straight-up sunscreen that I would wear on its own as SPF."

"This one is fragrance free. The main complaint from what I read online is that people complain that it pills. So if you apply this over a full morning skincare routine, apply this and then apply foundation over it, it will pill. For me, what I found is if I apply this after I wash my face and apply a vitamin C serum and then apply this, it's enough for my skin when it's kind of humid out, without following up with tons of layers, then apply this and just set it with powder, and I don't have any issues of pilling. I'm pretty confident I'm applying it liberally. In here we've got zinc oxide, we've got some fructose saccharides which are sugar-based humectants, bioflavonoids, ceramide, and sodium hyaluronate, which is probably the cause of some of the pilling for people. Otherwise there's not too much else exciting in here. There's no tint to it."

"This is their DreamBeam sunscreen SPF 40 PA 4+, a zinc oxide tinted sunscreen. The tint on this product is much deeper in comparison to the Iris and Romeo one, so it may not work out well if you have a paler skin type, but for me personally it's almost a little bit too deep in that it gives the look that I maybe have a light coating of sunless tanner on my face. In contrast to the Iris and Romeo one, this one is water resistant, so it's a good option if you're going to be outdoors for a prolonged period of time doing activities where maybe you work up a sweat. It just ensures that it stays on the skin a little bit better, water resistant up to 88 minutes. This product does not have niacinamide, which I'm pointing out because I know some of you all are sensitive to niacinamide. This has ceramides which are good for the moisture barrier, and hyaluronic acid, a humectant that helps hydrate the skin. I really like the finish on this as well. No white cast whatsoever with this formula."

"I want to purchase the Kosas DreamBeam sunscreen. It's basically like a more golden iridescent luminescent sunscreen shade, still SPF 40, and it has peptides and ceramides in it. It just looks really pretty, it looks like it's right up my alley. I don't know if it's good at all. I personally like the original formula, I thought it made my skin look really glowy underneath makeup and I feel like it set really well for me. But I've also heard from people that they do not enjoy this sunscreen. I think sunscreen is a very personal choice, very dependent on your own skin type and everything that you're kind of going for, the kind of finish that you want with a sunscreen. I have not tried it yet, and if I'm being honest, I probably have this one coming to me in PR. I have not personally tried it yet, but if I don't get it, I will go purchase this one. It just looks interesting to me."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Alpha hydroxy acids

Alpha hydroxy acids loosen the bonds holding dead cells at the surface. The evidence supports smoother texture and more even tone over time, and they can leave skin more sensitive to sun.

Sunscreen filters

Sun protection is the best evidenced way to slow visible ageing, and the filters are what does the work. Mineral and chemical filters both protect when a product is applied thickly enough and often enough, which is where most people fall short rather than on the choice of filter.

Ceramides

Ceramides are part of the skin's own barrier, and moisturisers built around them have evidence for holding water in and settling the tightness and flaking that come with a damaged barrier.
