    What the gurus are saying

This balm earns consistent praise for speeding wound and blemish healing, with one expert reporting it closes compromised skin roughly twice as fast as skincare alone and helps prevent hyperpigmentation from forming. The peptides and overall formula are built to support skin recovery, making it particularly useful for post-acne flakiness, razor irritation, or raw patches that need gentle mending. A little goes a long way; most find a tiny amount is all that's needed, and many pair it with pimple patches for extra support.

"It's by Hero, it's the Rescue Balm. It is a color correcting green cream that visibly evens the skin tone with the pigments in this product. I am very redness prone, that is part of what I deal with as my aging skin, so green corrects red. This is what I've been using so much during the day instead of makeup. It's a very subtle green, and then when you rub it in, it covers the redness. It is a very new to me product, it's actually a viral product, and for a good reason it works so well."

"You absolutely could use this cream for cuts, maybe some accidents with the razor if you're shaving right on your face or anywhere really, bug bites. I think it can be particularly helpful for anywhere that you need skin healing. The peptides in this formula and the overall formulation really do support that. I particularly use this one [...] whenever there's that area on my face where the skin is raw, it's open, it's vulnerable. I am putting this on the area and it really does work. It really speeds up the healing like two times faster. If I [...] just did normal skincare, I think that it's a lot slower to mend up on its own. Using this cream, it closes it up so much faster. But it doesn't just promote the healing by closing the wound; it really does promote the healthy healing of that wound, that smooth skin. I think it helps to cut down on the hyperpigmentation if you suffer from that."

"This tube, which is teeny, lasts until you die. You put this on a red spot and just say goodbye. If you're feeling really hot and bothered, find yourself one of the pimple patches, put the tiniest dab on, less than you think you need, put the pimple patch over it and go get married. It's unbelievable."

"Hero Cosmetics has the Rescue Balm that's good. It's a lot more lightweight if you have acne breakouts and they heal, they're dry, the skin's super irritated, maybe the acne treatments you were using dried out your skin too much. Try the Hero Cosmetics Rescue Balm, it's really good. It has like a peptide in it which may aid in barrier recovery."

"Hero Cosmetics Rescue Balm is really nice, when a pimple heals it can be really dry and flaky, this is a great option. It's also good if you get windburn, you can put it on the face to help as a barrier cream, and it's good if you're wearing a mask a lot and getting irritation. Rescue Balm is a good option."

"This is another favorite of mine, their Rescue Balm, for after your pimple has resolved but you still have a dark mark or a red mark, when the skin underneath is still healing. This Rescue Balm is great because it's got a peptide in it which helps with hydration and may help with healing, and it provides a nice lubricating barrier, like a nice healing balm. It's got beta glucan and panthenol in it, both very hydrating ingredients, good for the moisture barrier."

"The Rescue Balm, the color correcting one, is something you could use if you have post acne redness, as a spot moisturizer to reduce irritation and help camouflage the redness, similar to their Post Blemish Recovery Cream. This is good, it's got beta glucan and peptides, it helps hydrate the healing skin and reduce irritation and friction. These are both pretty good."

    What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

    Sunscreen filters

Sun protection is the best evidenced way to slow visible ageing, and the filters are what does the work. Mineral and chemical filters both protect when a product is applied thickly enough and often enough, which is where most people fall short rather than on the choice of filter.

    Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.

    Peptides

Peptides are short protein fragments meant to signal repair. The evidence for them is thinner than for retinoids or vitamin C, and it varies a lot by the specific peptide, so the category is more promising than proven.
