What the gurus are saying

This serum delivers genuine hydration and a silky, creamy texture that feels particularly nourishing in cold months, but the heavy load of fragrant plant extracts (lavender, sandalwood) poses a real risk for anyone with sensitive skin or a compromised barrier. Gurus praise the ceramides and soothing ingredients like allantoin and rice milk, yet those same plant extracts that give the serum its feel work against its claim to calm irritated skin, making it most suited to people whose barriers are already stable and who do not react to fragrance compounds. Some find the texture substantial enough to wish it were a thicker moisturiser instead.

"The Glow Recipe Avocado Ceramide Recovery Serum, which is 45 bucks, has ceramides, avocado oil, turmeric, rice bran oil, ginger, and green tea. Ginger extract is great for soothing skin."

"I do like the Glow Recipe Avocado Ceramide Recovery Serum and I have used it quite a bit, but while it's technically fragrance-free, when you look at the ingredients you don't see the word fragrance but there are actually a lot of plant extracts in here that do contribute to scent, and so I do hesitate to recommend this for everybody. I do hesitate to recommend this for sensitive folks and I do hesitate to recommend this as a barrier repair serum because I don't think that those ingredients work really well on vulnerable or damaged skin or very sensitive skin. I have personally used this just to keep my barrier in a good spot and to bring a lot more moisture into my skincare routine, a lot more nourishment. It's a very creamy nourishing moisturizing avocado oil-based serum and it feels very very good in the cold winter months if you want something just to keep your barrier strong, you're not super duper sensitive, your skin's in a good spot and you don't react to the types of ingredients. I really like it, I think it's a beautiful texture."

"The gel texture of this might feel a little heavy for some folks on the very oily end of things, but generally I think a wider amount of people are going to enjoy the texture of this alone. I do like this product, I use this product, it feels amazing on my skin, I love the texture, it's very elegant and that kiss of richness is beautiful for me. But there are quite a few plant extracts in here, and when you have very sensitive skin it's a lot to navigate and it may not be worth trying out because if you do get irritation it's going to be impossible to know what irritated your skin. There are quite a few fragrant plant extracts in here, lavender, sandalwood. While they're not as aggressive as an essential oil, they are still going to contain trace amounts of those fragrant compounds that can be very irritating to skin. Because it's a product that claims to help calm and soothe irritated skin, it may not be the best ingredients list if your skin is very irritated. If you're prone to sensitivity with fragrance, those are not the smartest ingredients to include in this type of product."

"This calms irritation and tackles redness with its main ingredients being Ceramides, Allantoin to help moisturize and soothe the skin, Rice Milk to soothe and hydrate, and Avocado Butter and extract to help moisturize the skin. I really enjoy this serum, but this is the serum I wish was a moisturizer. If this was just a little bit thicker, this would be the ideal evening moisturizer. As the weather gets colder and my skin sometimes needs this recovery stage, I love that bit of extra attention and healing ability that I can sleep on overnight with a thicker layer on my face. But it's a perfectly nice ceramide serum stage."
