What the gurus are saying

One guru ranks it in her top two retinol body lotions and loves it as an evening moisturizer, though the retinol concentration isn't disclosed. However, another expert found it merely decent and wished for stronger retinol and deeper hydration, suggesting anyone with very dry skin may want to layer it under a richer moisturizer to get enough moisture. Results appear to vary by person and may take time to show.

"This is a really nice luxurious moisturizer for the body and it has retinol at that effective concentration to really help with crepey skin, even skin tone, and just helping your skin stay resilient as you age so you don't develop that solar purpura. I do love this product and you can apply it pretty much anywhere. Not only does it have hydrating ingredients, it's definitely not tacky, but because of the whole formulation you can use it on more sensitive areas like the neck, the decolletage, and the arms, even for some people with sensitive skin. This is an amazing product, it's been viral on social media over the last couple months."

"This one is slightly more hydrating. It's a little thicker and it's a little more occlusive than the Necessaire. Both are beautiful products, but if you're just looking for a basic retinol product for the body, this is a fantastic one. It's always in my body care rotation."

"This was nice but I didn't love it. I feel like there's better out there in terms of strength. I found this to be very gentle, which is great if you have sensitive skin, but if you are looking for something at a higher strength, something that is a little bit more aggressive to target sagging and wrinkles, discoloration, stretch marks, all that stuff, I just don't think this is the best option. The only thing that I noticed was that my skin was a lot softer and smoother, so it does help to address texture and it is very moisturizing, but besides that I really didn't see anything else. Maybe you'd have to go through like three of these before you see results. I'm not going to be repurchasing right now. If you are looking for something that is quite strong and powerful, I wouldn't say that this is it."

THE TRUTH ABOUT THE NEW DRMTLGY BARRIER REPAIR MASK & RETINOL BODY LOTION | REVIEW/FINAL THOUGHTS!
"If you're someone with a lot of dry skin you may or may not feel like this is moisturizing enough so you may want to use this as that first product and then put something else on top of it to add more moisture if you need it. Overall I think it's a decent product. I don't feel like it's a flop. I just wish it was a little bit stronger with retinol and a little bit more moisturizing. This is something that's going to take time to work or you might be somebody that might see improvements right away. I like it but I don't love it."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Retinoids

Retinoids are among the best studied ingredients in dermatology, with solid evidence for acne and for the fine lines and rough texture that come from sun exposure. Dryness and flaking in the first few weeks are common and usually settle.

Ceramides

Ceramides are part of the skin's own barrier, and moisturisers built around them have evidence for holding water in and settling the tightness and flaking that come with a damaged barrier.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.
