What they liked

  • Rich, moisturizing texture with ceramides and peptides
  • Softens calluses, ingrown bumps, and rough patches
  • Medicated scent typical of high-percentage lactic acid

What they flagged

  • Stings or tingles after shaving or waxing
  • Too strong for eczema or compromised skin barrier
  • Requires sunscreen on treated areas

What the gurus are saying

The 12% lactic acid concentration earns consistent praise for softening rough patches, ingrown hair bumps, and textured skin, but that same strength means a noticeable tingle and medicinal scent come with it. Those with sensitive or freshly shaved skin may want to ease in with once or twice weekly use, or apply it to tougher spots like heels, elbows, and thighs on days skin is not freshly irritated. The ceramides and peptides layered in make it unusually moisturizing for a chemical exfoliant at this percentage.

"The Dermatology Exfoliating Renew Body Lotion is a 12% lotion for your body and this is excellent. It's just a very straightforward product that's going to help resurface your skin. It's a very rich moisturizer. In this you have ceramides which are going to provide a backbone of support for your skin barrier along with multiple other hydrating helpful ingredients. Texturally it's great, volume is great, very thoughtful. I love this product."

"I still like it because it's a great exfoliation product at 12% lactic acid. If you have an open cut or something like that somewhere, it's going to give a tingle. And if you have dry, sensitive skin, it might give your body a tingle. I use it as an overnight exfoliating mask and then rinse it off in the morning because it does have a bit of a detectable scent. Kind of that typical lactic acid smell that you get in the higher percentage lactic acid products. My skin is soft and silky by morning. For my sensitive skin, dry skin, I would do this maybe once or twice a week for body exfoliation."

"My favorite body treatment from Dermatology is their Exfoliating Renew Body Lotion. This is 12% lactic so it's on the strong side. In fact, when I had some a little bit of eczema earlier in the spring and summer I wasn't able to tolerate this, but I have built up a tolerance to using this high percentage of lactic acid. It's a gorgeous body lotion if you want to soften the look of that creepy skin. I do use other exfoliating lotions but this is definitely always in rotation. I love it and have highly recommended it for well over a year now. I started out using it just on my feet to sort of soften the calluses on my feet, works great for that too, and hands and elbows. So if you have sort of those rough bits around your elbows this is great too. I actually passed it on to my older son who was having some buildup of callus on his elbows and they're completely softened and the skin is completely renewed in that area. Super great formula, but also the caution is that it does contain 12% lactic so go easy if you have sensitive skin."
Best Skincare For Mature, Over 50 Skin! (New DRMTLGY Launches & Favorites)
"I love this body lotion but I wish it was double the size. The exfoliating lactic at 12% is a great combination for mature dry creepy skin for the body. If you are somewhat sensitive you may have to really use this sparingly or try it only once a week. Never use this on broken skin or eczema because it is at 12% lactic acid which is really high, but lactic acid is great for mature skin. It's a gentle exfoliator but it also moisturizes the skin. This is a lovely body combination."

Best Body Products For Soft, Smooth, Younger-looking Skin Over 50 - Mostly Drugstore
"I know that a lot of people use this exfoliating body lotion by DRMTLGY for the body and I have started to but I have to be a little bit careful because this is a very high percentage I believe it's 12% lactic acid which is a little bit too high for me and I occasionally get a little bit of irritation but if you just have dry flaky creepy skin and you don't have any eczema or skincare concerns or broken barrier you are going to love this it is a fantastic moisturizing lotion and slightly exfoliating especially for mature skin. I know tons of people that use and love this. I use it occasionally on my body but mostly for my feet and it has replaced my dermatonics foot soothing cream. I still like use this occasionally but I actually prefer the DRMTLGY exfoliating body lotion. I've slowly introducing it into my treatment step for body exfoliation."
I Tried 12 ANTI-AGING Body Skincare Products! What Really Worked to Get Rid of Dry, Crepey Skin!
"Dermatology is 12% lactic acid exfoliating body lotion has been one of my faves since it launched. I absolutely love this lotion, it's creamy, it definitely exfoliates the skin over time very gently. It does have that lactic acid scent, so if that's not something you can tolerate you might want to think twice about this one, it's pretty potent. I had to work my way up to this and it will sting a little bit if you have a nick or cut on your skin, so definitely be careful that you don't have any broken skin barrier when using this. It's a pretty strong exfoliating lotion but it will leave your skin so soft and smooth."
Exfoliation 101: How To Find the Right Exfoliant for Your Mature Skin Type & Skin Needs
"I have done that with the exfoliating lactic acid lotion by DRMTLGY. I just slather myself with it, sleep overnight, and then rinse it off in the shower in the morning, and I'm thinking about bumping it up to doing the same thing with this product. This is something that I only do once or twice a week, and I combine it into my body care routine. I just think exfoliating can just brighten the skin, whether it's your body skin, whether it's your face, it just helps with that skin cell turnover, it just brightens the look of mature skin."
2025 Body Care for Crepey Skin Over 50 | Holy Grails, New Finds & OneSkin Results!
"Still my holy grail for exfoliating is the DRMTLGY Exfoliating Renew Body Lotion. This is 12% lactic acid. This is no joke. If you have a broken skin barrier or if you have compromised skin or some eczema, do not use this. Wait till your skin barrier heals up because this will give it quite a tingle. This is not the nicest smelling product. I'm just going to put that out there, but it does the trick. In my evening skincare routine, I put it on, put a moisturizer over it, go to bed, and then I usually rinse it off in the morning. It just has that typical lactic acid smell, especially at 12%. It's pretty strong smelling, and that's what you wanted to do. You wanted to give your body a great exfoliation. And lactic acid is also very hydrating. So this is my holy grail exfoliating product has been for years."
Top Beauty Picks of 2024 Over 50: Skincare, Makeup & Hair Care
"The best exfoliation body lotion is once again DRMTLGY Exfoliating Renew. This has 12% lactic acid, moisturizing, hydrating, great for mature skin. I can't recommend this highly enough. But definitely do a little bit of a patch test if you have any broken skin because it will give a little bit of a sting, so definitely patch test this because 12% is a fairly high percent of lactic acid. But again, one of my holy grails."

"This is amazing if you have dry, scaly, flaky skin on your legs. If you have texture on your chest, if you have ingrown hairs where you have those bumps, this is going to be your go-to to correct all of that. I use this all the time. I use this a lot in the summer on the backs of my thighs to get rid of ingrown hairs like those bumps. And then in the winter, I like to use this on my legs. And I also like to use this a lot on my chest because sometimes my chest will develop texture and this wipes out the texture and it gives the most softest, smoothest skin ever. And it's also a very moisturizing lotion as well. There's oils in here, there's ceramides, and there's also peptides. But the main ingredient here is 12% lactic acid. This is quite powerful and you do smell it. It smells very medicated when you're using it. And I wouldn't recommend using this right after shaving or right after waxing because you most likely will experience a burning, tingling sensation that could last for a couple of minutes. But it is a good one to use on the days that you did not shave or wax. And it really does perform quite well, especially during the winter months."

DRMTLGY BLACK FRIDAY SALE 2024 | MUST HAVE ANTI-AGING PRODUCTS THAT ACTUALLY DELIVER RESULTS!
"If you're looking for a really nice body lotion that exfoliates that helps with ingrown hairs those bumps that we can develop on the backs of our thighs and you're just looking for something to keep your skin smooth soft and bright this is a must try. I am so impressed with this. I couldn't believe how well this works. This past summer this is going to be even better during the winter months when we do become quite dry. I use this occasionally on my heels sometimes I will use this on my hands before I go to bed just to exfoliate them. I will basically use this from my chest down it works anywhere and it is amazing. I am somebody that develops a lot of bumps on the backs of my thighs and I've actually been using this instead and it has performed really well. There is a little bit of a medicinal scent to it like a chemical scent because this contains 12% lactic acid. There's also ceramides in here which I think is really important when you do have a chemical exfoliant at a 12%. There's also some peptides in here and the list goes on. This is very moisturizing but when you use this you might experience that tingling sensation. I know I do pretty much every time I use this but especially so once I have shaved my legs."

"It's going to help with dryness, it's going to exfoliate, it's going to brighten, it can also help to smooth out your skin, improve texture and tone, and soften fine lines and wrinkles. There's ceramides in here to prevent transepidermal water loss to strengthen that skin barrier, there's also peptides and the list goes on. I really love using this on my chest especially because my chest can develop some texture from time to time. I love using this on the backs of my thighs as I do experience bumps and I love this for my legs and my arms because sometimes especially in the winter my arms can become quite dry and they can look a little scaly, especially in the dead of winter. This is fabulous because it just keeps your skin nice and soft and exfoliated. You get that brightness back with your skin and it's also very moisturizing as well. If you wanted to put something thicker on top of this for more nourishment feel free to do so. Just know that if you have freshly shaved your skin and you put this on top you will most likely experience a tingling sensation and that might last for up to 20 seconds or so and then it does subside. I've noticed it more when I have freshly shaved legs but if you haven't shaved or waxed in a few days you probably won't experience it. I would say start with a couple of times per week, see how your skin does, and then gradually increase from there just to be safe because it is a powerful product and it works really well."
BEAUTY EMPTIES 2025 || SKINCARE AND HAIRCARE PRODUCT'S I'VE USED UP - PROJECT PAN
"I can't live without this. This is something that is wonderful if you're someone that has those bumps on the backs of your thighs. You have that scaliness on your legs or your arms. You have keratosis pilaris. You know, you have fine lines on your chest, maybe discoloration. Like, this is going to target multiple skin concerns that we have with our body. But the only thing with this is that now that we're coming into the warmer months, you really want to make sure that you're wearing sunscreen on the areas that are being exposed to the sun, especially the areas where you're using this because this contains 12% lactic acid. Yes, but there are ceramides in here and those ceramides really help to strengthen and repair that skin barrier. There is also peptides in here and that is a great thing to have peptides in with lactic acid because generally if you are using separate serums that's not a recommended pairing to use your AHAs with your peptides but because this is formulated correctly where there's peptides in there with that lactic acid that is why it works so well."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Alpha hydroxy acids

Alpha hydroxy acids loosen the bonds holding dead cells at the surface. The evidence supports smoother texture and more even tone over time, and they can leave skin more sensitive to sun.

Source: NIH, National Library of Medicine

Ceramides

Ceramides are part of the skin's own barrier, and moisturisers built around them have evidence for holding water in and settling the tightness and flaking that come with a damaged barrier.

Source: DermNet

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.
