What they liked

  • Moisturizes without stickiness
  • Small amount covers a large area
  • Reasonably priced for the size

What they flagged

  • Scent like old powder, off-putting to some

What the gurus are saying

A baby powder scent earns praise from some but frustrates others who call it old-fashioned and off-putting. Still, those bothered keep repurchasing because the formula truly delivers with good hydration, a creamy feel without heaviness, and performance that beats pricier brands like Bioderma and Cetaphil while costing far less. Anyone very sensitive to scents may want to skip it.

"For body wash and body lotion I love Derma B, it has more of a baby lotion smell and it's pretty affordable. Their body lotion is pretty mild, but I felt it actually works better than Bioderma or Cetaphil, which are more expensive and aren't even from Korea."

"If you don't like a scent that's too strawberry and you want more hydration, try the Derma B body lotion, that is my holy grail."

"This one's a little bit more rich and I'm not as wild about the scent of it. [...] There's [...] like an old person baby powder kind of scent to it, but the formula is really nice. [...] I've gone through a few bottles of this and [...] I continue to purchase it because I like the formula, but the scent really really bothers me. It's a little bit weird. If you are very sensitive to scents you might want to skip it. [...] It's not a heavy formula, just slightly more creamy, and you feel a little bit more moisturized."

August Empties | Are they worth it tho gurrrllll???
"This one is just like a little bit more lightweight so also hydrating, just more lightweight, and this one's a little bit more rich I would say. The only thing is this one I don't mind the scent, it's kind of like non-existent. This one has kind of a baby powder scent and for some reason it kind of bothers me. It's not the end of the world, it's kind of fresh, like it's relatively light, but it's like a creamy baby powder scent and for some reason that just really bothers me. Doesn't stop me from using it, but if you're really really sensitive to scents and you don't like baby powder you might want to skip it. I will absolutely be repurchasing this. I've probably gone through at least three bottles of this, at least maybe four."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.

Peptides

Peptides are short protein fragments meant to signal repair. The evidence for them is thinner than for retinoids or vitamin C, and it varies a lot by the specific peptide, so the category is more promising than proven.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
