What the gurus are saying

This essence delivers a natural, skin-like finish that holds beautifully through the morning, but gurus split on staying power as the day goes on. Those with oily or combination skin may notice shine creeping in by afternoon and should consider pairing it with a matte setting powder, while anyone with dry skin could find it genuinely lovely worn on its own. Application matters here: using a dense flat-top brush helps the formula blend more seamlessly than fingertip application alone does, and the drugstore price point makes it worth trying if you're curious about this formula type without the luxury price tag.

"I like it a lot. I think it looks very natural, very skin-like. It looks like nothing on your skin but it does give you some coverage and it stays in place really well. So that's a really great one for like the natural look girlies out there who really just don't want to look like they're wearing any makeup but you have some things on your skin that you want to improve the look of or you just want a dewier, more glowy look to your skin. This will deliver that with a very sheer wash of pigmentation. It does get kind of shiny and a little bit oily looking in the afternoon, so I would definitely wear a little bit of a more matte setting powder with it, but if you have super dry skin you may just love this as it is."

"I actually do like this foundation a lot. I think for something that gives such light coverage, it's really beautiful for the first half the day or maybe with a little bit of a more matte setting powder. If you have super dry skin you may just love this as it is, but on me it definitely gets kind of shiny and a little bit oily looking in the afternoon. I would definitely wear this again. I like it a lot. I think it looks very natural, very skin-like. It looks like nothing on your skin but it does give you some coverage and it stays in place really well. I think it's really good and I think that people with drier skin than me could really like it just as is, but if you do have a little bit of an oily T-zone like I do, you're going to get some shine later in the day."

"The Foundation that I used was this Covergirl Simply Ageless Skin Perfecting Essence Foundation and this is supposed to be a dupe for a Chanel Foundation that has like those little beads in it. This really surprised me because things like this usually the tint is so minimal that you look like you don't have anything on and this one actually gives you a little bit of coverage. It wore really really well all day in that video. Since it was a one-day test it did get really super shiny in the afternoon but I suspected that it was from the setting powder that I used with it. So I have used it since then with my regular setting powder and it didn't get shiny in the afternoon."

"Covergirl Simply Ageless Skin Perfecting Essence with Nol, that's an antioxidant. It doesn't act like retinol, it may help stabilize retinol, it may be helpful for the skin, that's about it. Oh my gosh, hold your breath because you're not going to believe what I'm seeing on the ingredient list of a makeup product: tranexamic acid. Tranexamic acid is good for the moisture barrier and some preliminary evidence suggests it may be helpful for redness, so nice to have in there. But just look at this formula. You've got these little beads of the tint in a gel base that I'm guessing bloom onto the surface of the skin as you apply it. That's kind of cool, I'm intrigued by that."

"I do have a fail, the CoverGirl Simply Ageless Skin Perfector Essence, I wanted this so badly because I fell in love with a similar product, this is supposedly a dupe for the Chanel Le Teint foundation skin tint and it's the same price. The idea is there, the beads are there, but it's just not breaking up properly, my struggle was getting this to apply evenly because the beads don't break up properly and you end up with a patchy application. Also be careful with this if you have dehydrated skin, my skin was a little dehydrated the other day and the essence part of this immediately soaked into my skin, which made it even worse, so that left the beads on the surface of my skin. What an absolute mess, I washed it right off."

"For me I feel like the cover one honestly gets a green of course you have to use a brush"

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Tranexamic acid

Tranexamic acid has a growing body of clinical evidence for melasma and the stubborn patches of pigment that other ingredients struggle with.

Sunscreen filters

Sun protection is the best evidenced way to slow visible ageing, and the filters are what does the work. Mineral and chemical filters both protect when a product is applied thickly enough and often enough, which is where most people fall short rather than on the choice of filter.
