What the gurus are saying

The packaging's built-in scraper creates more mess than order: product dries out on top and gets wasted, even though the serum itself hydrates and calms redness well and earns genuine praise. Experts would only rebuy it if it came in a pump dispenser. The price is steep.

"I love this lineup from them. Their Sensibio line is just a wonderful line. It's typically all fragrance-free. They've got a serum that's got some soothing ingredients in it. It's supposed to be for soothing irritated skin, maybe post-procedure microneedling, things like that. It's got bakuchiol in there. It's got licorice root, which is a great soothing and brightening ingredient. And then the star of the show looks like the TGO Cosmo 250, which is a soothing and brightening ingredient that's supposed to calm irritation on your skin almost immediately. I did a laser last year and my skin was burning afterwards. And that serum did help a ton."

"I'm going to go in with a Bioderma Sensibio Defensive Serum. This is just a really nice moisturizing serum. In hotter weather, we're having a bit of a heat wave again here in the UK. I like to concentrate on hydrating and moisturizing ingredients before my moisturizer, then just use a really lightweight moisturizer and sunscreen over the top because I don't like my skin to feel too bogged down with occlusive ingredients."

"The Bioderma Sensibio Defense Serum is an amazing, nice hydrating, calming, soothing serum for redness, itching or discomfort, and I pretty much used the whole thing up. Unfortunately the packaging lets it down. It comes with a scraper on the top meant to wipe excess serum off the pipette and keep things tidy, but in my experience it gets very messy, product dries out over the top and you lose a lot of it. I would buy this again if it came in a pump."

"They've got one of my favorite anti-redness moisturizers, the Sensibio AR by Bioderma, at 25.99. That's pretty steep."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
