What the gurus are saying

This balm delivers strong color with the comfortable, moisturizing feel of a lip balm, without the drying intensity of lipstick. Reviewers praise how it fades naturally without getting patchy and keeps lips feeling hydrated throughout wear. If you find lipstick too intense or drying, this offers a gentler middle ground. Around forty dollars, it's pricey for a lip product, though many who've tried it say the comfort justifies the cost.

"So the other one was like a gloss in a balm, this is like a lipstick in a balm so more pigmented. I love this color, this is shade N which I think is like their nude color, gorgeous. It just looks so beautiful on the skin. You can see again that it's got like a little bit of that balmy texture to it. If you are afraid of lipstick where it just feels like too much of a commitment when it comes to pigmentation and how intense that is, this is a really nice hybrid where you get some color deposit on the lips for sure, like that color is there, but it also has that balmy texture and it also wears off really nicely. I find that it doesn't get patchy as the color kind of fades, it just sort of naturally disappears. So I think this is amazing for like parties or if you just kind of want something to wear at work."

"I always have lip balms and lipsticks with me. These are two of my favorite colors from YSL, the Rouge Volupté Shine, this one is number 130 and number 122. This is a pinky nude color and then this is another pinky nude color, now this is more like a warm brown reddish tone, and I love these colors. If you guys are wondering what kind of lipsticks I'm wearing, this is a really good guess that I'm wearing one of these."

"The YSL Rouge Volupté Shine, the color is called Showstopping Rose. It's almost like a hot pink. I really like the formula of this because it's like a cross between the color payoff of a lipstick but the kind of moisturizing balmy feel of a lip balm, and that's perfect for my lips."

"The color is just so cheerful, it's so flattering. [...] The formula is great, and I've tried a lot of [...] the different colors they have. I really like how this looks and how it feels. The price is a little steep for a lipstick at about forty dollars, [...] but this color is really kind of just like [...] my new signature color for a while. [...] My lips are happy, they're hydrated, they're plump, they're not dry, and that is such a win in the lipstick category for me."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
