    What the gurus are saying

This mask delivers dramatic skin smoothing and visible pore refinement through lactic acid and papaya enzyme, leaving skin noticeably softer and smoother. Apply to damp skin, let the enzymes work, then rinse; the potent formula warrants cautious use, typically monthly or bimonthly rather than more frequently. The lactic acid also helps address hyperpigmentation while it exfoliates, making it worth considering for uneven skin tone.

"I found this one to be a little bit harsh. I didn't love it and I don't find myself reaching for it hardly at all. I don't love it for the price, so this one's an easy pass in my opinion. I have a problem with Youth to the People anything that they have in a jar, which is pretty much everything, and it ends up drying out very fast. I try and if I buy something from them I try and hurry up and finish it as fast as I can because I know it's probably going to go bad at some point soon. The first several times I used it I liked it, and then after that I'm not sure what happened but I just found it was too sensitizing and I found the exfoliating grains in here a little bit harsh and unforgiving. The more I ended up using it the less I ended up liking it."

"This is from Youth to the People and I do love some Youth to the People products but I haven't spoken a ton about the brand. I love their glass packaging and I love this formula. This right here is the Yerba Mate Resurfacing Energy Facial. It's an instant facial and this has lactic acid. This facial, it is potent and it is fun. This is a scratchy little mask that you can put on your face as an instant facial at home. When you wipe it off, it really helps with those large pores and texture. This has passion fruit, it has turmeric, and for exfoliation it also has papaya. It's basically a papaya enzyme so it helps to gently exfoliate the skin and then the lactic acid helps to draw moisture into the skin, helps with hyperpigmentation, but also helps to clean things out."

"It is such a beautiful exfoliator. It makes my skin feel like a baby's butt and I use it probably like once or twice a month. When my skin is wet I will take a little dollop of this, I'll scoop it out, I will rub it onto my face and then I'll let it sit and let the enzymes kind of do a little bit more exfoliation and then rinse it off my face."

    What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

    Niacinamide

Niacinamide has evidence behind it for redness, uneven tone and supporting the skin barrier, and it is usually well tolerated even by skin that reacts to most things.

    Source: DermNet

    Alpha hydroxy acids

Alpha hydroxy acids loosen the bonds holding dead cells at the surface. The evidence supports smoother texture and more even tone over time, and they can leave skin more sensitive to sun.

    Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
