What the gurus are saying

This cleanser splits reviewers sharply on dryness. Some find it genuinely stripping, describing a squeaky-clean tightness that left even oily skin parched, while others praise it for removing makeup effectively without harshness and for feeling gentle despite its gel texture. Those with sensitive or already-dry skin may want to patch-test first, as the tightness some experience suggests it could aggravate reactivity.

"This cleanser has been around for a while, it's okay, it's like nothing to write home about, and it's $36, kind of pricey for a cleanser. I mean if you love it you love it, no problem there."

"This is a decent cleanser but honestly for me I actually found it a little stripping and drying on my skin. Other people absolutely love it. Youth to the People was a smaller brand when they first started out but now they've been purchased by one of the big brands. [...] I'd say if it works you go for it, [...] but now it's been purchased by one of the big companies I think it's better off finding a smaller brand and supporting them. But again there's nothing wrong with this cleanser. I've used it, it's just not my favorite and it certainly has gotten a lot of hype."

"Not affordable right, $40 for a cleanser is quite a bit of money, and I personally, my philosophy is I really don't like to spend a ton on my cleansers, especially a product that you put onto your face but then you wash down the drain immediately. I'd rather invest my dollars into something that sits on my skin. I personally just find that it doesn't work for my sensitive skin either. There's just a little bit of tightness, just a little bit of a squeaky clean feeling with this one."

"The green Youth to the People cleanser that went viral over lockdown dried out my oily skin so bad. It takes a lot to strip my skin of its natural oils, especially my oily T zone, and this honestly felt like a stripping cleanser from the early 2000s. It is a bit much and somehow very, very stripping, and I do not see people genuinely loving it anymore."

"It is not cheap but it's still one that I justify purchasing just because of how incredible the formula is. If you have oily skin a lot of texture build up throughout the day then this is an incredible product for dealing with that. This cleanser is just the epitome of what you want with a luxurious cleansing experience. It's still not a cheap formula and I think for the majority of people the bottle lasts a long time but I go through this so fast just because I love to use a lot of it."

"This is like a stronger cleanser and I've always said that this one works really well if you have like combination more oily skin and even for me I still use the cleanser to this day but I'll only use it like maybe once a week just because it is so powerful but whenever I use this cleanser I always look at my skin afterwards and I'm like damn it really clears all the gunk out of there. The only thing I don't like about this cleanser is don't get it in your mouth because that is nasty. It just makes the skin feel so soft and cleansed but not too stripped afterwards. Great for oily skin."

"I love the formula, I've always loved this cleanser. This cleanser is so good if you have really oily skin but it's such a lovely experience and whenever I notice that my skin is feeling a little bit more textured, there's a lot of oil and dirt buildup, I always go in with this cleanser because I can always count on it to just clear all that off my face."

"I love love love this formula however almost $40 for a cleanser is definitely pushing it. That is very expensive and with all the other amazing cleansing formulas out there, I think for me personally I was like you know what, I think I'm going to recommend other products. But you guys really love this formula and what can I say, I love this formula too. So if you're someone who loves a luxury product, you want that luxurious experience and that deep cleansing power, I will always recommend this cleanser, but it is the most expensive cleanser on this list."

"My personal favorite for helping with blackheads is the Youth To The People Superfood Cleanser. Whenever I'm looking at my skin and these blackheads are back, I use that cleanser and I swear it removes so many of the blackheads on my face, it's a miracle worker."

"There's of course my tried and true favorite, the Youth To The People Superfood Cleanser, which does an amazing job for combination or oilier skin and works well to remove a lot of the dirt and oil that builds up on the skin."
Specialist Reacts to Kaia Gerber's Skin Care Routine
"I'm obsessed with that cleanser. If you guys have watched literally any of my videos, I talk about this cleanser all the time. It does a really good job of removing all the dirt and excess sebum from your skin. I personally find it a little bit too strong to use every single day, twice a day. I'll usually use it at night, after really humid days, or if my skin just has a lot of buildup."

"I washed my face earlier with the kale and green tea spinach superfoods cleanser from youth to the people and then I love this stuff by the way this is one of my favorites for any cleansing devices so my Foreo it foams up really beautifully but it's just a good overall cleanser. This is my second bottle, which is impressive for me because I switch skincare so much and I have so much skincare, so when I empty something that means I really love it."

"Youth to the People Kale and Green Tea Spinach Vitamin Superfood Cleanser, this lathers in the nicest gentlest way. It smells like fresh spinach when you take it out of the garden and cut it, it is just this really lovely very earthy kind of smell in a good way and I just happen to love this. It's about 35 dollars and it lasts until forever."

"Another cleanser I really love is one I've talked about before, it's from Youth to the People and it's their Superfood Cleanser. This contains a blend of kale, green tea, and spinach so it's loaded up with antioxidants and vitamins. And even though it's a gel cleanser, it really doesn't strip my face of moisture and I feel like it does a really good job in terms of cleaning my makeup off, even kind of stubborn mascara. During the summer time we are wearing tons of sunscreen, we're sweating, so you really need a cleanser that is very effective at removing all of that from your face."

"I actually purchased this as part of a Sephora shop with me. These cellulose products gum up on the skin but they gum up in your hand even with a glove regardless of whether or not they touch your skin. These can be amazing if you are someone who likes physical exfoliation but doesn't want to scratch off your face. This isn't the product peeling off your skin—this is the product having a liquid evaporate and leaving behind beneficial skincare ingredients like enzymes that do exfoliate, and then you almost have this physical, it's almost like a gomage or a paste that you can rub across the skin."

"Youth to the People's Superfood Cleanser is lovely and well loved, but because I'm putting this in a suitcase I don't want it to break. The glass is very eco-friendly and sustainable, but it's not something I can carry with me, which is why I'm leaving it at home on the shelf."

"Oh my God, I love this stuff - it's the green tea, spinach, vitamin superfood cleanser from Youth to the People. It smells like earth and flowers and vegetables but also fruity, just everything amazing. I love earth and flowers and vegetables and everything about it. This is a great cleanser."

"This cleanser is not only one of Hira's favorites but it's also an oily skin favorite. I actually find that this can dry out certain skin types if you are prone to more dry skin, but if you're like me and you get a little grease even at like 8:30 in the morning, then this could be one of your best friends. It does have antioxidants in it which are great both topically for your skin. Everything from the spinach, the green tea, the gluconolactone, we love to see it, and it looks like this is working pretty well for her face."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Vitamin C

Topical vitamin C is an antioxidant with reasonable evidence for dullness and uneven tone. It breaks down in light and air, so how a product is formulated and packaged matters as much as the percentage on the front.

Source: DermNet

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.

Source: DermNet

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
