What they liked

  • Brightens and evens skin tone
  • Very gentle physical exfoliant

What they flagged

Nothing. None of the experts who reviewed it raised a problem.

    What the gurus are saying

Papaya enzymes brighten uneven skin tone while this gentle gomage-style exfoliant simply balls up on the skin rather than stripping it. These enzymes have been shown to help even out pigmentation, making this especially appealing for anyone working to harmonize their complexion. That gentleness is especially valuable for anyone who exfoliates regularly and worries about stripping their skin.

"The one that I recommend which is a blend of physical plus chemical is the Wishful Yo Glow AHA BHA Facial Enzyme Scrub. I have used this ever since the product has been launched. This is one of my most repurchased products. Obviously you get a little bit of that BHA enzyme chemical exfoliation which is chemical but you also get the benefit of physical exfoliation."

"I actually purchase it back, it is not something that I use every week, sometimes I use it once a month, sometimes I use it twice a month. Sometimes you just want a nice physical scrub but you don't want a harsh scrub, and that is what it does. It's an AHA BHA enzyme exfoliator, is super gentle, has actives. It is something that has my heart and this is my most favorite product from the Wishful line."

"One of my favorite exfoliating products for pigmentation is the Wishful Yo Glow because it also has papaya enzymes in it which have been proven to help to brighten and to even out skin tone in addition to the AHA BHA combination. It is not a physical scrub, it is an enzymatic scrub, but it's not abrasive. It is not going to cause micro tears and it is not going to cause your acne scarring to get worse. And it smells absolutely heavenly."

"This enzymatic scrub from Wishful smells divine. You see how it's very fine with a very light texture? As you start using it over and over, it builds up and picks up all the superficial dead cells on the surface of your skin, becoming something gentle without being harsh on your face. If you have OCD tendencies and you just feel the need to buff your skin, an enzymatic scrub is probably the best way to go. I quite frankly like them too because I do have OCD tendencies."

"If you cannot afford the Kate Somerville Exfoliate, we have Wishful. I will tell you Huda Katan's brand Wishful is a nice dupe. Yo Glow AHA BHA Facial Enzyme Scrub contains both papaya and pineapple extracts as well as BHAs and LHAs. It does not have the pumpkin enzyme in it and it retails for 39 dollars. I know I'm a dermatologist and I know people are scared of fragrance, but when I tell you this one smells lovely and heavenly and I am into aromatherapy, it is part of the beautiful ritual of skin care. It has a beautiful scent. If you are allergic to fragrances, maybe avoid, but I love her."

"This one is from Wishful skincare and this is actually made of cellulose. Cellulose is essentially plant fiber and our bodies can't break it down and neither can our skin but when it's on the top of the skin and the liquid from this formula evaporates the cellulose in here actually kind of gums up and it feels like dead skin cells but it's actually the product gumming up on itself. However it can grab some dead skin cells in the process and if you have sensitive skin and you want to exfoliate a cellulose based product can be really really good for that."

"The Yo Glow is one of those gomage products that balls up on the skin—it's not your dead skin cells coming off, it's just a very, very, very gentle physical exfoliant. It was stolen along with my jojoba oil, but the timing is perfect because now I can replenish with 50 to 80 percent off."

    What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

    Salicylic acid

Salicylic acid dissolves in oil, so it can get into a pore rather than just working on the surface. That is why it has long-standing evidence for blackheads and milder acne.

    Source: DermNet

    Alpha hydroxy acids

Alpha hydroxy acids loosen the bonds holding dead cells at the surface. The evidence supports smoother texture and more even tone over time, and they can leave skin more sensitive to sun.

Source: NIH, National Library of Medicine

    Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.
