"Whey protein and taking protein supplements can aggravate acne. I get a lot of patients who have just started working out in the gym and have started taking protein supplements and they invariably come with a lot of acne on the back. So if you are somebody who has a lot of acne on the back then you want to avoid whey protein. I'm not seeing that everybody who takes whey protein will develop acne but it is an aggravating factor if you are somebody who has a tendency to develop acne on the face or on the back then you want to avoid whey protein."

"Whey protein is really popular with bodybuilders, athletes, and people looking for muscle building, but it has been associated with stubborn acne breakouts. It may be because whey protein is derived from dairy, and dairy products can lead to increased insulin-like growth factor, which drives oil production and makes a more hospitable environment for acne-causing bacteria. Not everyone who takes a whey protein supplement will have acne though; it's likely dictated by your genetics."
