What the gurus are saying

This serum earns consistent praise for its potent vitamin C concentration at a fraction of luxury prices. Experts highlight the brightening and anti-aging lift, the hydrating support from hyaluronic acid and vitamin E that seals in the active, and the improved dropper packaging over older glass ampules. The main caveat: the dropper exposes vitamin C to air with each use, so it oxidizes faster than airless pumps would allow, check the bottle color before buying and aim to finish within two months of opening. Those with sensitive skin may want to patch-test first, though most found it gentle enough for regular use.

"Aside from the C Ferulic, I think Vichy vitamin C is great, and you just want to make sure that you look for one that's been shown to clinically support the oxidative stress."

"This is also watery and in a bottle I believe lasts two months. So once you open it you do want to use it up within two months versus the skin suiticles where once you open you want to use it up within six months. So it has a little bit longer time. I believe with the price point if you're going through two bottles every month it kind of is similar to the skin suiticles but this is another great alternative that you can consider for those with normal to oily skin."

How to Actually Choose a Vitamin C Serum (Dermatologist Guide)
"Active 16% vitamin C serum. Very nice dropper bottle. They improved on the glass ampules. I remember from 6 years ago, people were hurting themselves breaking the ampules open and getting the vitamin C serum. Now much improved delivery. And I have to say they kept the hyaluronic acid formulation which really helps plump up the skin, temporarily hides fine lines and wrinkles with the hyaluronic acid, but you get the brightening long-term effects from the 16% [L-ascorbic] acid. They use their volcanic thermal spring water, which is so nice. So I think it's a great brand."
Things I Actually Do for Anti-Aging (Dermatologist Routine)
"I've been doing Vichy's Vitamin C serum that's 16% lift active very nice and hydrating will just eliminate the hyaluronic acid step at bedtime. This does all the heavy lifting in my routine in terms of anti-aging, boosting collagen, keeping my pores small by keeping them clean."

Best Skincare Essentials of the Year
"If you want to consider one that's very hydrating would be Vichy LiftActiv 16% vitamin C serum with hyaluronic acid and vitamin C. You have elosorbic acid to help brighten your skin. So if you're on an island, you're getting lots of sun, you want to protect your skin with vitamin C because you're going to get a lot of free radical damage that will cause fine lines and wrinkles and dark spots."

"If you are using a vitamin C serum though, you would apply your vitamin C, which is very labile, unstable. Apply that first, let it send to the skin, and then put your hyaluronic acid serum over it. Especially Vichy LiftActiv 16% vitamin C serum. Very hydrating as well."
Stop Overcomplicating Your Routine — Do This for Glowing Skin
"I love the Vichy LiftActiv because it has hyaluronic acid, is very plumping, helps with hiding the fine lines and wrinkles, and really just has two steps in one. Instead of having a separate hyaluronic acid serum, you can go ahead and apply this after cleansing in the morning. And then seal it in with a moisturizer."
Best Anti-Aging Products of 2025
"It has hyaluronic acid, so I love that it's just going to replace my hyaluronic acid step. This one has impressed me. 16% L-ascorbic acid, a very pure active form of vitamin C. This is a much cheaper price point than SkinCeuticals, but still very effective and very plumping. And you've got your vitamin E in this as well. Very fast absorbing too and fragrance-free as well."
Best Vitamin C Serums of 2025- Dermatologist’s Top Picks
"The Vichy, they've gone through some packaging changes I think have really were very necessary. And so now that we got packaging down, we got cosmetic elegance down. It's fragrance-free. You got a nice sweet spot of 16% ascorbic acid. This one specifically, I'd say, is good for dry, sensitive skin types. So definitely had to make my top list this year."

The Best Affordable Vitamin C Serums!
"Vichy has ascorbic acid, vitamin E, and this is a nice French brand that I've been using for a long time. They used to have those glass vials, those ampules that you would break off quite dangerous, and so they got rid of those and now they have ones in a dropper bottle or even one in this like plastic tip applicator. I can't find that product right now but I feel like that one has been giving me trouble, it has been if I have it tilted to the side it does leak quite readily so be careful with that one. This is their newest one, 16% ascorbic acid, vitamin E, hyaluronic acid, and the dropper looks just like that. My critique is you got to squeeze the plastic applicator to get the drops out, it gets a little messy for me. This is their newest one, I'm looking forward to trying this out but this could be a nice potential gift idea here, the new Lift Active Vitamin C Serum by Vichy if you want something in between those two."

Unlocking The Secrets Of Layering Skincare Serums: Dermatologist's Layering Serums 101 Guide
"Vichy has the active ascorbic acid but it's very labile and you want that to touch your skin first to help reduce dark spots fight free radical damage. So I would say after cleansing apply Vitamin C first before going on to hyaluronic acid. If you end up switching the two that's fine, hyaluronic acid is a pretty neutral ingredient and so if you applied that first I'd say your vitamin C is still being put to work."
Discover How You're Aging Your Skin & Ways To Turn Back The Clock
"I like that this is like a two-in-one it has hyaluronic acid very hydrating because of that and so instead of having a hyaluronic acid serum in addition to it just use a nice vitamin C serum. Just take the plastic tip off and you have this applicator and you just gently squeeze it, put like five drops on your hands, pat it into your skin and you can even bring some down to your neck or décolletage area. This plastic applicator is meant to prevent oxygen from going into the product itself and oxidizing the product so it will last longer."
Dermatologist Reviews: Best Budget Vitamin C Serum Roundup
"This is the Vichy LiftActiv, and this is a vitamin C serum that I've been using since 2020. Really great brand, makes great retinols. This has been so nice. It's 15% ferulic acid and vitamin E, so it's comparable to more expensive options, but this is only 30 to 35 bucks, so it's a very affordable option that I've been using quite a bit. It also has hyaluronic acid and that nice 15% vitamin C serum that I feel is right in that sweet spot."

It helps to even out and illuminate the complexion, shields from environmental stressors and oxidative damage. It contains 16% pure vitamin C ascorbic acid, a powerful antioxidant that brightens the skin and combats signs of aging. This also contains carnosine, which is known for its anti-glycation properties. It helps protect skin proteins from damage, further preventing visible signs of aging."

"This one has a little bit higher vitamin C, has that elcorbic acid at 16%. Also has a little bit of carnosine which is known for its anti-glycation properties and it helps protect the skin from further sun damage and visible signs of aging. I have used this one. For some reason, this antioxidant left my skin almost orangish looking around the hairline. It could be the user. Somehow it did not sit amazing under my sunscreen and I really don't know if I applied it incorrectly or I used too much. I will try again. It didn't have that crazy smell like the SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic did to me."

"15% vitamin C is quite high so it's a good concentration that you can get over the counter, it's very similar to even some of the medical grade stuff. You've got vitamin E and pure hyaluronic acid in there, so vitamin E will act as a very good barrier protection. Whilst you have the vitamin C as an antioxidant layer, it's very prone to sort of evaporating off the skin, but with the vitamin E you seal in all the products and you also have hydration protection as well. You've got hydrolized hyaluronic acid there which is great to have, you've got the tocopherol which is obviously the vitamin E, you've got glycerin which again is going to be helping the barrier. Ascorbic acid is high up on the list which is really good to see because it means it's more of a concentration of the vitamin C. And interestingly you've got pinus pinaster bark extract as well, and it's got some great antioxidant properties that work very well with vitamin C. So if you've got kind of like sun damaged skin, maybe a little bit more sensitive skin, this is not going to be a bad thing. It's going to really help with the brightness."

"You've got the Vichy vitamin C which is a nice example of a serum, it's got multiple different types of things in there as well so it's got things like vitamin E in there and it's got glycerin which helps with the skin barrier and it's also got a few nice extracts that are going to really help with making sure that you're not getting many breakouts as well"

"Another awesome L-ascorbic acid based product is the Vichy LiftActiv Vitamin C serum. This contains 15% L-ascorbic acid, hyaluronic acid, vitamin E, and pine polyphenols which are just another class of antioxidants. I like this one because it is very lightweight but still hydrating and it comes out as a serum and it's really easy to layer over. It doesn't irritate my skin so I'm a big fan of this one."

"I did find one at the drugstore that is formulated at the right pH, and that is the Vichy Liftactiv Vitamin C Serum. However, as you can see, this is already brown, it has oxidized a bit already, probably because it's been sitting on the shelf in that CVS for a long time. So is this my top choice? Absolutely not."

"When we talk about vitamin C, I like to focus on ascorbic acid because that's really where the data lie, and this one by Vichy is an option. I suggest going with bigger brands that have large R&D, like Vichy, which is a L'Oreal brand. But the packaging here is a dropper bottle, and as the ascorbic acid is exposed to air each time you go in and out of that package, it is more likely that the ascorbic acid will degrade, so ideally airless pumps would be a better option."
Yay
"You can get a 15% L-ascorbic acid from Vichy. I consider this just a best all-around product. It is a very good formulation. I love Vichy, it's a French skincare brand because so many of their products they have such simple straightforward formulations with just the quality ingredients, not a lot of fluff, and that is how I feel about this product. My favorite thing is this new and improved bottling packaging of it. It is a dropper bottle formula so the top just turn it over, a couple drops, and you put it on. It's very important to have high quality packaging of your vitamin C serums because it's not very stable, so you want opaque, airtight. I love this packaging. Vichy, another top pick from the drugstore."

Updated Drugstore Vitamin C Serum! | Not Sponsored | The Budget Derm Reviews
"This is one of my favorite drugstore vitamin C serums and I'm really excited that they have leveled up their packaging here. The new packaging is so important especially for vitamin C products that are so unstable they can break down and become totally inactive so quickly after opening. There is inert gas that has removed the oxygen from the container which is very important because oxygen coming into contact with vitamin C can oxidize it and make it inactive. The best part of this bottle is the top—you remove it and it comes with a dropper so you can prevent it from being exposed to the air. You turn it upside down and squeeze to get just the amount of drops you want for your face. This is 15 percent pure L-ascorbic acid which is about as high as you should go to avoid irritation and you will get plenty of benefit at that level. The formulation has only 11 total ingredients, an amazing minimalistic formulation. It also has vitamin E which is crucial to pair with vitamin C because they can boost each other's effectiveness for protection against environmental stressors and aging, and it has pine phenols which is another antioxidant to help as well. It's fragrance free and paraben free. This is one of the most affordable drugstore vitamin C serums that I think does a great job at improving the skin."
Do Drugstore Vitamin C Serums Actually Work?! | The Budget Dermatologist
"Vichy has two vitamin C serums that I have used personally and I've had my patients give me positive feedback on these as well. Both of these are great options with minimalistic formulas with just 10 and 11 ingredients, and this ensures that they are stable and great for sensitive skin because they do not contain a lot of extra filler or unnecessary ingredients that increase their risk of irritation or contact dermatitis, and they are both under 30, which is extremely affordable for a vitamin C product. The serum has 15 percent pure vitamin C, and you will get benefit with this, but the higher the percentage the more potentially irritating this can be if you have sensitive skin or if you have never used a vitamin C product before. The packaging is a traditional dropper bottle format similar to the C E Ferulic, with a dark bottle to protect it from the light, but the downside to me is that you expose this product to air even for just a short time during every single use, which could potentially speed up the timeline for how quickly this becomes inactive."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Vitamin C

Topical vitamin C is an antioxidant with reasonable evidence for dullness and uneven tone. It breaks down in light and air, so how a product is formulated and packaged matters as much as the percentage on the front.

Source: DermNet

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.

Source: DermNet

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
