    What the gurus are saying

The 1% selenium disulfide in this shampoo earns praise for being particularly effective at tackling stubborn dandruff and the yeast that causes it, especially for those with harder-to-control cases. Gurus note the salicylic acid helps exfoliate buildup and ease itching, while the formula manages not to dry out hair despite its strength, making it suitable for people with oily scalps and dry strands. Those with moderate to severe dandruff may want to use it regularly, as the gurus found it can help prevent flare-ups for weeks at a time.

"One of my favorite shampoos that were released last year, Vichy Dercos. That shampoo has selenium sulfide and salicylic acid. I will use it on my scalp, but I also will wash my face with that as well."

"You can always go with Vichy's Dercos shampoo. I love that one cuz it has selenium sulfide plus salicylic acid. So, if you're having itch plus scale, the salicylic acid will help exfoliate the scalp. That's another great one."

"The US version on the website they only highlight niacinamide and their micronized sulfide but further down on the ingredient list they do mention salicylic acid. I don't know what percentage so maybe it's not a lot, it's not very significant, but I just wanted to call that out. After trying this out for several weeks I actually like this. I'm on my second bottle and yeah I guess it does remind me of the European version, so good job Vichy USA for having salicylic acid."

"Vichy just released an anti-dandruff shampoo and they have clinical studies showing it's comparable to a 2% ketoconazole shampoo. The main ingredient is called Dercos, and selenium sulfide as the active ingredient is very effective. They have a shampoo, a conditioner, and a leave-in scalp spray with salicylic acid in it. I had a patient in who we'd been treating for seborrheic dermatitis who wasn't getting better the way we wanted, so I gave her the Dercos shampoo, conditioner, and salicylic acid spray, and it was a remarkable transformation. Selenium sulfide is a great ingredient, and if you get dandruff on the face you can wash your face with these products too, just let it sit for a few minutes."

"The best smelling ones I've tried are the Dercos Anti-Dandruff DS shampoos. To me, Selsun Blue's fragrance is just a bit too strong."

"Vichy has a selenium sulfide shampoo here good for dandruff, similar to selenium sulfide and Selsun Blue. I really like it."

"I really love this for those that have a little bit more harder to control dandruff. The difference between this one and the other two that I just talked about is if you have more severe dandruff and want something a little extra because the ingredients is different. It contains 1% selenium disulfide and selenium disulfide is much stronger and more effective at killing off the malassezia, and also contains salicylic acid and glycerin. I love this one because for those that do have harder to control dandruff you can use it on a regular basis to treat your dandruff but also minimizes relapse for up to six weeks and at the same time does not dry out your hair. If I'm struggling with dandruff a little more frequently then I will use the Vichy. Highly recommend this one if you have dry hair oily scalp or more moderate dandruff to use on a regular basis for better control."

"If you have dandruff that is another contributor of oxidative stress. So you definitely want to make sure you're using anti-dandruff shampoo that contains like zinc pyrithione, selenium sulfide, niserol. For example, like Vichy, I've talked about their products before, Dercos from Vichy."

    What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

    Salicylic acid

Salicylic acid dissolves in oil, so it can get into a pore rather than just working on the surface. That is why it has long-standing evidence for blackheads and milder acne.

    Alpha hydroxy acids

Alpha hydroxy acids loosen the bonds holding dead cells at the surface. The evidence supports smoother texture and more even tone over time, and they can leave skin more sensitive to sun.
