What the gurus are saying

Gurus confirm topical estrogen is effective for boosting collagen and skin thickness during and after menopause by replenishing declining estrogen levels. The consistent caution is that it can trigger hyperpigmentation or worsen melasma in some users, a risk many don't anticipate. Despite this trade-off, both reviewers note it proves helpful for many in their routines when the benefit outweighs the concern.

"Topical estrogen can work for women around the time of menopause and thereafter because with menopause we have a decline in estrogens which end up being really important for producing healthy collagen. There is evidence that topical estrogen can provide and replenish that stimulus and allow for better collagen production, better improvement in skin thickness. It's definitely been shown to be effective. There is a potential for it to cause hyperpigmentation that's something I don't think everybody realizes. If you've ever dealt with melasma, you know it flares up whenever estrogen levels are high, like in pregnancy or with certain birth control pills. While putting it on the skin can have a similar effect for some people, so there's definitely that to consider. We're trying to improve collagen and fade age spots, and the last thing you want is to maybe cause hyperpigmentation. But for a lot of people it does end up being very helpful for their routine."
