What the gurus are saying

Gurus emphasize that retinoid effectiveness hinges almost entirely on formulation quality and brand reliability rather than ingredient type or price. Retinaldehyde may theoretically offer more promise than retinol, but both can work well or poorly depending on stability, formulation, and the manufacturer's R&D strength. Established brands with proven track records produce more reliable products than newer brands entering the market.

"When it comes to cosmetic retinol and retinaldehyde, you also have to put a lot of trust in the manufacturer. You can have a really crummy retinaldehyde product that isn't formulated that well and doesn't remain that stable, and you can have a really great retinol that gets into your skin and over time is converted to the active form. So it's a bit of a gray area, but on paper it would seem as though retinaldehyde might have more promise, but we really don't know, and it boils down to who is making it, the formula, and how well it's formulated. It's not necessarily the price point but it's the brand, what is their track record, do they have a good R&D behind them. Then the products probably are a lot more reliable, whereas brands pop up all the time and it's hard to say if they could be effective."
