What the gurus are saying

One expert praised it as a gentle, fragrance-free option for those with facial seborrheic dermatitis and very sensitive skin. However, the product has been discontinued. Before it was pulled, gurus noted that zinc pyrithione in a cleanser bar can help control flaky red patches around the brows and nose, and may also address tinea versicolor, a condition that flares seasonally. Those who want to try a similar approach should lather the bar on affected areas and let it sit for a few minutes before rinsing.

"Vanicream came out with the Z-Bar which you can use to wash your face if you have seborrheic dermatitis of your face and that's a gentle fragrance-free cleanser. That was a big move on their part to make a fragrance-free shampoo but it will definitely benefit those who have very sensitive skin, especially facial seborrheic dermatitis."

"Vanicream discontinued their Z-Bar. Zinc pyrithione is an anti-dandruff ingredient but it can also help with CC dermatitis, those little flaky red irritated patches in the brows around the nose. A zinc pyrithione cleansing bar can help control that. Zinc pyrithione is also really helpful in a cleanser for tinea versicolor, which tends to rear its head this time of year. You just lather it to the affected areas like around your nose if you're dealing with sebderm there, and then you just want to leave the lather on the skin for a few minutes, just kind of let it hang out and marinate there before rinsing it off."

"The Vanicream Z-bar is a go-to because I've never seen a zinc pyrithione body wash, and the alternatives are anti-dandruff shampoos, but the bar is much gentler in my opinion and experience, especially for using on the face, than a shampoo. It has zinc pyrithione in it, which has been used in dermatology for over 50 years, it's very safe, and it works as a broad spectrum antimicrobial that helps minimize the yeast on the skin that plays a role in dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis, and it also helps with acne, atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, rosacea and hidradenitis suppurativa because it's anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial. It's free of fragrance, and because it's a bar there's no need for the preservatives you'd need in a liquid."
