What the gurus are saying

This one has a serious problem: it tested at SPF 4 to 7 despite claiming SPF 50 plus, which the experts who caught it called a real gap between label and real-world protection. One guru appreciated the creamy, hydrating texture but found it leaves a white cast and can sometimes peel depending on what skincare is used underneath. The brand's lack of response to the testing concern left the experts uncomfortable, and most would skip it until the formula issue is resolved.

"Ultraviolet was shown that their mineral sunscreen had like four to seven SPF protection as opposed to like the 50th states. This one used 22.5% zinc oxide as its filter. So keep that in mind."

"If a sunscreen claims to be SPF 50 plus and tests as an SPF 4, that's not good. There's no amount of well it was decanted for a brief period of time that really makes that amount of difference. And that was the same for all of the sunscreens and it didn't impact any of the other sunscreens to that extent. There was clearly a problem. Now it might be a problem with that batch, it might be a problem with the whole formula. I don't personally buy into this narrative that you should blindly believe what the brand are saying because they came out and just said there's nothing wrong with our product, keep buying it. Well any brand would say that, wouldn't they? So I think it's a shame that Ultraviolet didn't respond better. Personally I'm moving away from that particular sunscreen, but I like the other formulas for that Ultraviolet brand. That's fine. Doesn't mean all of their products are a fail, just that one I probably wouldn't use."

"This is the Ultraviolet Mineral Sunscreen, an all mineral sunscreen with zinc oxide. It's a cream formula, but unfortunately it does leave a white cast, so I have to put a little bit of tinted moisturizer over this to get it to work. It's a creamy formula. It's really nice. It's really hydrating. I've also found that sometimes depending on the skin care that I'm using that day, it ends up peeling. So I've had trouble kind of getting through this."
