What they flagged

  • Irritating ingredients that sting lips
  • Unpleasant aftertaste at back of throat

What the gurus are saying

This lip balm stands out for tasting and smelling like vanilla frosting, unlike the typical sunscreen funk of most SPF lip products. Reviewers split on tolerance, though: most love the SPF 50 and pleasant flavor, but some found the ingredients irritating with lingering unpleasant taste, so sensitive lips may want to patch-test first. The sheer formula layers nicely with lipsticks if you want more color payoff.

"I tried the Ultraviolet Sheen Screen SPF 50 hydrating lip balm in the shade Bejeweled. It does have ingredients that irritate my lips, which just makes them look a little more full, but that's not a good thing. It starts out tasting okay, but then it hits the back of my throat and it's just a horrifying, awful sensation you can't get rid of. This was a flop, it tastes terrible."

"I use it every single day. It's SPF 50. It's amazing. And the best thing is that it doesn't smell or taste like ass. Cuz most SPF lip products smell and taste like ass. This does not. It smells like a funfetti birthday cake. So good. And like we need to take our suncare seriously, so make sure you're using an SPF lip balm. And the fact that it's SPF 50, like are you kidding me? Gorgeous. And it works so nicely with my lipstains."

So Sephora's having a sale... What to skip & what's actually WORTH IT

So I tried ALL the Ultra Violette Sunscreens…
"This is SPF 50. It smells nice, [...] almost vanilla but kind of butterscotchy. It's hard to describe, but it has a little bit more of a sweet kind of like baked good or frostingy kind of scent. And it doesn't taste like sunscreen, which is just amazing. If there's one thing, like if none of this appeals to you, this I'm telling you, you have to get it. It's amazing. I love it. Very happy with that."
I use these EVERY DAY
"The Ultra Violette Sheen Screen Hydrating Lip Balm, this is SPF 50. They have two shades. This one's a little bit more caramelly kind of color, but they also have a lighter pink color which might be my favorite. I keep that one in my purse so that I can use it when I'm on the go. You need to remember to apply sunscreen to your lips. Lips are being affected by the sun just like everywhere else. But it doesn't taste like anything bad. It actually smells like frosting, vanilla frosting. A lot of SPF lip products smell terrible and taste terrible, but this one doesn't. So if you accidentally lick your lips, you're not like, you know, having a bad time."

"This comes in three shades, I have it in the shade Bejeweled, and this is all chemical so there's no mineral formulation here. I like this on its own, it's very sheer, but if you pair this up with a lip liner or put this on top of a lipstick then of course you can make this more vibrant. I love it. I love how it's an SPF 50."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Sunscreen filters

Sun protection is the best evidenced way to slow visible ageing, and the filters are what does the work. Mineral and chemical filters both protect when a product is applied thickly enough and often enough, which is where most people fall short rather than on the choice of filter.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
